About the journal
Today, planning and management are widely recognized as vitally important for the development of health, and for the efficiency and control of those activities that impact upon health. At the same time, the economic circumstances facing countries world-wide present a great challenge for health planning and management. The aim of this quarterly Journal is to respond to this challenge, by offering a forum and outlet for publications that direct attention to major issues in health planning and management systems and practices. Overall, the intention is to maintain a sound balance between practice and theory, from a variety of schools of thought. The Journal is explicitly international and multidisciplinary in scope and appeal: articles about planning and management issues in countries at various stages of social, cultural and economic development are to be welcomed, as are those directed at the different levels (national, regional, local, etc.) of the health sector. Manuscripts are invited from a spectrum of different disciplines (medicine, management and the social sciences), provided that these advance our knowledge and understanding of the health sector, broadly defined. The Journal thereby brings together work which in the past has been too widely scattered throughout the literature.
Editorial Policy The Editors welcome contributions from teachers, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners, whose knowledge, skills and visions bear broadly on the planning and management of the health sector. The overriding criterion for full-length manuscripts is originality, a high scholarly quality, and genuine interest to a wide audience. In addition to publishing original articles, the Editors encourage submission of: review articles; short notes on conceptual difficulties and technical developments; summaries of published research findings; book reviews; news of forthcoming colloquia; and summary proceedings of important national and international symposia falling within the aims and scope of the Journal.
Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to the Editorial Office, International Journal of Health Planning and Management, Centre for Health Planning and Management, University of Keele, Keele, Staffs, ST5 5BG.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect.
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles, except book reviews. A summary should be of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to five keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
The journal accepts four types of manuscript for publication: Articles, Invited Reviews, Short Communications and Book Reviews.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate and must use Index Medicus journal abbreviations for links to MEDLINE. To check for correct abbreviations please see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
Black D. 1997. Introduction to medicine. Basil Blackwell: Oxford, 1-10.
Lust JA. 1988. The impact of benefit availability on employee benefit satisfaction. In Proceedings of the Southern Management Association Meetings, Ray D (ed); University of Georgia, College of Business: Atlanta, GA.
Gaal P, McKee M. 2004. Informal payment for health care and the theory of 'INXIT'. Int J Health Plann Manage 19: 163-178. DOI: 10.1002/hpm.751
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure that the top of the figure is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies); tints should be avoided. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing. Text width of 118 mm.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of The International Journal of Health planning and Management. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs are sent to the Editor only for correction. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the first named author unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
