About the journal
Infancy is the official journal of the International Society on Infant Studies. The journal emphasizes the highest quality original research on normal and aberrant infant development during the first 2 years. Research from children older than 2 years of age may be included if the results add to an understanding of infant development. Most of the research will involve human infants, although some infant animal work may also be included. The criteria for acceptance will be rigorous science with logical arguments and conclusions. Any theoretical approach is welcome; the reporting and discussion of statistical effect size when appropriate, as recommended in the APA publication manual, is required. The emphasis of the journal is on original research articles and brief reports (3,000 words), but target articles with peer commentary will also be included, as well as thematic collections with peer commentary. A unique aspect of the journal is that authors will have the opportunity to submit additional archival material such as color photographs, sound files, QuickTime movies, and large data sets to the companion web page, Infancy Archives (www.infancyarchives.com), which will accompany each issue of the journal.
Research Articles: Original research articles that present recent research findings (typically multiple experiments) related to infancy or infant development.
Brief Reports: Short research articles (up to 3,000 words of text) that present recent research findings related to infancy or infant development. Subject headings need not be included.
Target Articles With Peer Commentary: A theoretical or research-based article that presents recent research findings and/or theoretical ideas related to infancy or infant development. Peer commentary will follow target articles; authors are invited to submit suggestions for peer commentators.
Thematic Collections With Peer Commentary: Three or four research-based articles from independent laboratories that contribute new findings on a common topic related to infancy or infant development. Thematic collections will include peer commentary as well. Authors are invited to submit suggestions for commentators along with the submitted collection of articles.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission: All submitted manuscripts should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001). Authors should prepare manuscripts in Word or another popular word-processing program to create an electronic file of the manuscript. Be sure to "blind" the manuscript of any identifying information about the authors and research sites (see below). We prefer to receive the blinded manuscript in PDF format because it ensures that all special symbols are formatted correctly. But if you are unable to convert your file to PDF format, simply send the Word (or other word processing) file as an attachment via e-mail to: infancy@bcs.rochester.edu. Do not submit the figures as a separate file, but rather insert them at the end of the manuscript. When a manuscript is accepted for publication, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to format the final version and transmit it (electronic and hardcopy) to the editorial office.
In a cover letter e-mailed with the manuscript, the submitting author should state that the material has not been published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The author should also state that the research complied with American Psychological Association ethical standards in the treatment of the participants. For more information about these standards, please contact the APA Ethics Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242.
Blind Reviewing System: To facilitate anonymous review, only the article title should appear on the first page of the manuscript. The submitting author should include in the covering e-mail message the authors' names and affiliations; a copy of the abstract; any statements of credit or research support; and mailing addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses of the authors. The authors should make every effort to see that the manuscript itself contains no clues to their identities.
References: Contributors should follow the guidelines specified in the APA manual for reference style in the text and reference list. Authors should check for consistency in spelling and dates between the text and the reference list before submission.
Permissions: Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to reprint or adapt a table or figure or to reprint a quotation exceeding the limits of fair use. Authors should write to original author(s) and publisher(s) to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages to use the material in print and nonprint forms of the current issue and in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines.
Production Notes: Upon acceptance of a manuscript the submitting author will be asked to provide two hard copies and a computer disk containing the unblinded manuscript file (in word-processing and ASCII or RTF formats). Files are copyedited and typeset into page proofs. Authors must read these proofs to correct errors and answer editors' queries in a timely fashion to avoid publication delays.
