About the journal
HUMOR was established as an international interdisciplinary forum for the publication of high-quality research papers on humor as an important and universal human faculty.
Humor research draws upon a wide range of academic disciplines including anthropology, biology, computer science, education, family science, film studies, history, linguistics, literature, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, physiology, psychology, and sociology. At the same time, humor research often sheds light on the basic concepts, ideas, and methods of many of these disciplines. The Editorial Board and the Board of Consulting Editors are composed of prominent humor researchers who specialize in these disciplines.
HUMOR publishes original contributions in the following areas:
- interdisciplinary humor research
- studies on humor theory
- studies of humor research methodologies
- applications of one or more disciplines to the study of humor
- applications of humor research to one or more disciplines
- studies of humor technology
- humor material databases.
Contributions take the form of empirical observational studies, theoretical discussions, presentations of research, short notes, reactions/replies to recent articles, book reviews, and letters to the editors. All the materials are thoroughly refereed.

Instructions to Authors
Contributors are invited to submit articles pertaining to humor research to the Editors: Editor-in-chief: Salvatore Attardo English Department Youngstown State University Youngstown, OH 44555 USA E-mail: humor@cc.ysu.edu Book review editor: Peter Derks Emeritus Professor of Psychology College of William and Mary Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795 USA E-mail: plderk@facstaff.wm.edu Newsletter editor: Amy Carrell Department of English University of Central Oklahoma 100 North University Drive Edmond, OK 73034-5209 USA E-mail: acarrell@ucok.edu Contributions should be in English. Contributors whose native language is not English are asked to have their article carefully checked by a native speaker. Each article must include an abstract of up to 200 words and a list of up to six keywords. Please submit articles as electronic files (e-mail attachments), ideally MS Word. Electronic files must be typed double-spaced in 12 point font, with wide margins and page numbers (top right). Please avoid using automatic running heads/feet, and turn off any automatic formatting, especially numbering. There is also no need to justify the text.
Manuscripts should be divided into sections and, if necessary, subsections with numbered headings. The title of the article should appear at the top of the first page, followed by the author’s full name and affiliation. Emphasized and foreign words should be italicized. Please avoid the use of boldface in running text. Use double quotation marks throughout (quoted material within quotations must be enclosed in single quotation marks). Line drawings (“Figures”) and photographs (”Plates“) must be submitted as electronic graphic files, ideally gif or jpeg. Figures should be placed in separate files to the text files and clearly labeled. They should be referred to in the text and their approximate position indicated. Captions should be typed on a separate page and placed at the end of the article. Original artwork may be required if the electronic files are poor quality. Tables should be placed at the end of the article, numbered consecutively and given titles. Reference to the tables must be made in the text and their approximate position indicated. Endnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum. They should be marked consecutively throughout the text by a raised number following a punctuation mark. All endnotes should be listed on a separate page entitled ”Notes“ and should be included after the main body of the article (following any appendixes), before the reference section. Notes should not be placed at the foot of the relevant page. References are cited in the text by giving the name of the author/editor, year of publication and the page reference, all in parentheses, for example (Davies 1990a: 32). Use ”et al.“ in cases of more than two authors. Please note that ”et al.“ should not be italicized. The reference section should contain all works referred to in the text, and only those. They must be listed fully in alphabetical order of author/editor, with complete bibliographical details (including publisher). Journal and book titles must be given in full and must be italicized. Page references must be given for articles in books and journals. References should conform to the following examples: Davies, Christie 1990a Ethnic Humor Around the World: A Comparative Analysis. Bloomington: Indiana University Press. 1990b An explanation of Jewish jokes about Jewish women. Humor: International Journal of Humor Research 3 (4), 363-378. Goldstein, Jeffrey H., and Paul E. McGhee (eds.) 1972 The Psychology of Humor. New York: Academic Press. Martin, Rod A. 1998 Approaches to the sense of humor: A historical review. In Ruch, Willibald (ed.), The Sense of Humor: Explorations of a Personality Characteristic. Berlin/New York: Mouton de Gruyter,15-60. Morreall, John 1991 Humor works. Paper presented at the Ninth International Conference on Humour and Laughter, St. Catherine‘s, Ontario. Raskin, Victor 1985 Semantic Mechanisms of Humor (Synthese Language Library 24). Dordrecht: D. Reidel. Schopenhauer, Arthur 1957 [1819] The World as Will and Idea, vol. 1. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul. Authors are requested to check their manuscript very carefully before submission. Authors will receive page proofs for correction, which must be returned by dates determined by the publication schedule. 30 offprints of each article will be sent free of charge. (When there is more than one author, the offprints will be sent to the first-named author for distribution.) It is not possible to order additional offprints. Contributors to special issues also receive one complimentary copy of the issue.
