About the journal
For 20 years, human services professionals have relied on Health & Social Work for the latest advances in areas such as aging, clinical work, long-term care, oncology, substance abuse, depression, and maternal health. Articles also cover research, policy, specialized services, quality assurance, in-service training, and other topics that affect the delivery of health care services.
Instructions to Authors
Health & Social Work strives to publish articles that appeal to its diverse constituency. Articles with an international focus are welcome. Opinions expressed in the journal are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official position of the National Association of Social Workers, Inc. (NASW). Mention of trade names in this journal does not necessarily constitute an endorsement by NASW.
The editorial board welcomes manuscripts on all aspects of health that are of professional concern to social workers. The journal carries articles on practice, social policy and planning, legislative issues, innovations in health care, and research.
The editor-in-chief often groups related articles, and the editorial board occasionally invites articles on special themes. Themes have included managed health care, AIDS, substance abuse, and diversity.
Articles
Manuscripts for full-length articles should not exceed 20 pages. The entire review process is anonymous. At least three reviewers critique each manuscript, then the editor-in-chief makes a decision, taking those reviews into consideration.
Columns
In Practice Forum authors describe practice innovations and action reasearch. The editorial board seeks material that is important to and written by practitioners. The editor invites practitioners to submit brief articles that describe new and effective programs, techniques, or policies and often assists authors in developing articles. Manuscripts should not exceed eight pages.
National Health Line reports current legislative and political issues that have implications for social work practice in health settings. It provides a link between social work practice and health care policy. Although the editor writes the column, readers are invited to submit suggestions for topics.
Viewpoints features readers' comments and opinions on current issues in the profession. It offers writers an opportunity to express their opinions on issues that may have an impact on social work or social work clients in health or mental health settings. The maximum length for manuscripts is seven pages.
Letters to the Editor comment on issues covered in the journal or other points of interest to social workers in health or mental health settings to enhance professional dialogue. Letters should be no more than two pages.
The NASW Press has compiled a 32-page booklet, Writing for the NASW Press, that explains the peer review process and assists aspiring and experienced authors in preparing their manuscripts for publication. To request a free copy, contact:
