About the journal

First in its specialty area and one of the most frequently cited journals in geography, Geographical Analysis has, since 1969, published significant advances in geographical theory, model building, and quantitative methods to geographers and scholars in a wide spectrum of related fields. Traditionally, mathematical and nonmathematical articulations of geographical theory, and statements and discussions of the analytic paradigm are published in the journal.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to:

Alan T. Murray
Department of Geography
The Ohio State University
1036 Derby Hall
Columbus, Ohio 43210-1361, USA
Email: geog_analysis@osu.edu

Electronic submissions (Microsoft Word or PDF format as one complete file) or four (4) printed copies should be sent to the editor at the above address. Authors should include a statement that their submission has not been published and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

Manuscripts and illustrations should conform to the stylistic requirements set forth in these instructions. Note that manuscripts longer than twenty-five (25) printed pages may not be considered for publication. Also, manuscripts revised and re-submitted for publication consideration after 6 months or more will be treated as new submissions.

Books for review should be sent to the editor at the address above.

Format: Manuscripts may be sent via mail, double-spaced, on one side only of white bond paper, 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size, with wide margins or submitted electronically following the same guidelines for size. English language only. Upon acceptance, contributors will be asked to supply an electronic copy in WordPerfect, Microsoft Word or LaTeX.

Abstract: An abstract, double-spaced, must accompany the article. It should summarize the main points of the paper.

Literature Cited: All works cited should be listed alphabetically by author name in a double-spaced list at the end of the manuscript. Bibliographic information should be ordered as follows: author last name, initials, publication date in parentheses, title of the work, and (in the case of books) the place of publication and publisher, or (in the case of articles) the periodical title, volume number, and inclusive page numbers. References in the text to the literature should be made by the last name(s) of the author(s) and year of publication enclosed in parentheses, along with any other pertinent information; e.g., (Smith 1979), (Smith 1979, p. 241), (Smith 1979, chap. 2).

Mathematics: Displayed equations must be identified by consecutive Arabic numbers in parentheses on the right. Expressions should be aligned and compound subscripts and superscripts clearly marked if there is any potential for confusion. The use of a lowercase "oh" for a zero subscript or superscript should be avoided. To avoid repetition, replace a long expression occurring several times with a symbol. The slash (/) should be used to separate the numerator and denominator of all intent fractions and short displayed fractions; complex displayed fractions may be built up. Negative powers should be substituted for compound fractions in complex expressions. Multiple dots and bars over expressions should be avoided where primes can be used. Indicate boldface characters and italic characters by using the respective attribute of your word processing package.

Authors Affiliation: Authors must supply their professional title, department, name of the institution, and email address.

Illustrations: Illustrations may be high quality, and executed on white paper or vellum, in black ink, with clear, medium weight, black lines and figures or may be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format. Formatted lettering should appear in illustrations. Figures should be provided at sizes no larger than 4 1/2 x 7 inches (full page) and preferably no larger that 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (half page). They should be numbered consecutively, and the number and author's name should be penciled lightly on the back of each or the electronic file should indicate the number and author's name. All illustrations must have captions, which should not appear on the artwork but should be provided, double-spaced, on a page at the end of the manuscript. If there is any potential for doubt, the word top should be written on the back of the illustration or indicated on the electronic file.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively throughout the article and provided on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Each table must include a descriptive title and headings to columns.

Copyrighted Material: Permission to reprint any previously published material (e.g., tables, illustrations, and equations) must be obtained by the author from the copyright holder.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services.

Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they don't need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
