About the journal

Subscriptions for the year 2007, Volume 38, 6 issues
Geoforum is an international, inter-disciplinary journal, global in outlook, and integrative in approach. The broad focus of Geoforum is the organisation of economic, political, social and environmental systems through space and over time. Areas of study range from the analysis of the global political economy and environment, through national systems of regulation and governance, to urban and regional development, local economic and urban planning and resources management. The journal also includes a Critical Review section which features critical assessments of research in all the above areas.
Instructions to Authors
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Geoforum uses a web-based online manuscript submission and review system. Please visit http://ees.elsevier.com/geoforum to submit your manuscript electronically. The website guides authors stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. Note that original source files, not PDF files, are required. Authors may send queries concerning the submission process manuscript status or journal procedures to the Editorial Office. Once the submission files are uploaded the system automatically generates electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing. All correspondence, including the Editor's decision and request for revisions, will be by e-mail.
Submission items include a cover letter, title page, and the manuscript without author identifiers (including abstract, manuscript text, references, and table/figure legends), tables, and figures. Revised manuscripts should also be accompanied by a unique file (separate from the covering letter) with responses to reviewers' comments. The preferred order of files is as follows: cover letter, title page, response to reviews (revised manuscripts only), manuscript file(s), table(s), figure(s). Files should be labelled with appropriate and descriptive file names (e.g., SmithText.doc, Fig1.eps, Table3.doc). Upload text, tables and graphics as separate files. Do not import figures or tables into the text document and do not upload your text as a PDF. Complete instructions for electronic artwork submission can be found on the Author Gateway, which is accessible through the journal.
Only the Editors have the responsibility for deciding whether a paper is to be accepted, rejected or referred back to the author for amendment. They will be guided by the advice of the editorial board and by other competent referees selected for their knowledge of both the subject matter and the region under discussion in the paper. This procedure is designed to ensure that papers accepted for publication are of the highest scientific quality and reflect the wide interests of an international readership. The paper must fall within the stated aims and scope of the journal.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. A font size of 12 pt is required. The paper should conform to the following format: Page 1 should consist of the title of the paper, a list of authors and their contact information. Page 2 should consist of the title of the paper, an abstract and the keywords. Page 3 should consist of the title of the paper followed by the start of the body of the paper. All pages should be numbered.
The corresponding author should be identified (please include a fax number and e-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.
Paper length: The normal maximum length for a contribution is 10,000 words. However, all papers should be written as concisely as possible. Papers which, in the opinion of the editors, can be shortened without sacrifice of clarity or of scientific content will be referred back to the author for modification. Exceptionally long papers extending to 20,000 words will be considered if they are of great academic importance to an international readership.
Abstracts/Keywords: Papers must contain an abstract briefly summarizing the essential contents; the abstract should not normally exceed 250 words. We ask all authors to select a minimum of six keywords to describe their papers. At least one of these keywords should describe the paper's geographical focus.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote.
Notes: All footnotes (except table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. Short footnotes may be included at the foot of a manuscript page. Longer notes should be numbered and appear together at the end of the paper.
Units: All measurements must be given in the metric system.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)"). For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:
Graham, L., Hogan, R., 1990. Social class and tactics: neighbourhood opposition to group homes. The Sociological Quarterly 31 (4), 513-529. Hubbard, P., 1997. Immoral landscapes: metaphor, materiality and the marginalization of street prostitutes. Paper presented at the Association of American Geographers' conference, Fort Worth, TX. Philo, C., 1991. De-limiting human geography: social and cultural perspectives. In: Philo C. (Ed.), New Words New Worlds: Reconceptualising Social and Cultural Geography. Institute of British Geographers Social and Cultural Geography Study Group. Smith, R.W., 1963. Principles of Geography, 3rd ed. Oxbridge, Mongaper Press. Smith, R.W., Dale, P.H., 1963. Principles of geography. In: Jones, B.T., Brown, A.W. (Eds.), Growth of Geographical Thought, vol. 3. Oxbridge, Mongaper Press, pp. 373-390.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations. Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. Colour: Where colour figures are required the author will be charged at the current colour printing costs.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs). Large or long tables should be typed on continuing sheets.
PROOFS
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to: Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon, EX1 2AH, UK.
OFFPRINTS
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
COPYRIGHT
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. AUTHOR ENQUIRIES
Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
