About the journal

The Aims and Scope

As its name implies, Experimental Psychology (ISSN 1618-3169) publishes innovative, original, high-quality experimental research in psychology ¡ª quickly! It aims to provide a particularly fast outlet for such research, relying heavily on electronic exchange of information which begins with the electronic submission of manuscripts, and continues throughout the entire review and production process. The scope of the journal is defined by the experimental method, and so papers based on experiments from all areas of psychology are published. In addition to research articles, Experimental Psychology includes occasional theoretical and review articles.

Tradition and Innovation

Drawing on over 50 years of experience and tradition in publishing high-quality, innovative science as the Zeitschrift f¨¹r Experimentelle Psychologie, the new journal has an internationally renowned team of editors and reviewers from all the relevant areas of psychology, thus ensuring that the highest international standards are maintained.

Instructions to Authors

Experimental Psychology publishes innovative, original, high-quality experimental research. The scope of the journal is defined by the experimental method and thus papers based on experiments from all areas of psychology are welcome. To name just a few typical fields and domains of inquiry, Experimental Psychology considers manuscripts dealing with experimental work on human action, perception, learning, language, memory, thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and judgment, social cognition, and neuropsychological aspects of these topics. A major goal of Experimental Psychology is to provide a particularly fast outlet for such research. As detailed below, this goal will be achieved through a variety of measures. In particular, the fast, electronic exchange of information will be relied upon, beginning with the electronic transmission of manuscripts, throughout the entire review process, and also for proofing.

Categories of Papers. All manuscripts are to be submitted electronically. Research papers comprise the normal category of papers. They may contain up to 10,000 words including tables and references and up to 6 figures. An editorial decision on research papers will be made within six weeks.

Theoretical articles provide evaluative summaries of actual research, integrative accounts of ongoing research programs, or presentations of innovative theories and models for experimental psychology; they may also focus on methodological issues relevant for experimental psychologists. Theoretical articles are not limited in size, but not more than one such article will be published per issue. In addition, the review process may require more time than that required for research articles.

Manuscript Submission. Submissions are only accepted in electronic format via e-mail to exppsy@hogrefe.com. The following formats are accepted:

¡¤ pdf (portable document format)
¡¤ ps (postscript)
¡¤ rtf (rich text format)
¡¤ doc (Microsoft Word, version 6.0 and higher)
¡¤ wpd (WordPerfect, version 7.0 or higher)

Manuscripts should be submitted as one file containing text, tables, and all figures. The file should be named after the last name of the first author, and its extension should designate its format, e.g., smith.doc. Microsoft Word or WordPerfect files are preferred. Figures are accepted in high resolution tif and eps formats.

The manuscript should be attached to an e-mail that contains the following information:

¡¤ Contact information for the corresponding author (name, department, postal address, e-mail address, phone, fax)
¡¤ Contact information for all authors
¡¤ Specification of the manuscript category (theoretical or research article)
¡¤ For a research article, the word count
¡¤ A text version of the title, abstract, and keywords
¡¤ Any other information that will guarantee a fair and unbiased review process

Submission of manuscripts is taken to imply that neither the manuscript nor any component of it has already been published or is currently under consideration by another journal.

Manuscript Format. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). In particular, statistical and mathematical copy and references should conform to the Publication Manual.

Review Process. Based on the title and abstract, two or more reviewers will be requested to review the manuscript. In the case of a research article, the reviewers will be asked to complete their review within two to three weeks. The editor in chief makes his or her editorial decision and notifies the corresponding author of the result, usually within two working days of receiving the reviewers¡¯ feedback. There are three kinds of decisions: accept, accept conditionally (on minor changes), and reject. Rejected manuscripts can be resubmitted after substantial revision, but they will be treated as new manuscripts. The entire review process is completely reliant on electronic communication in order to ensure speedy processing.

Final Manuscript. The final version of an accepted manuscript should be in either Microsoft Word or WordPerfect format. If it is absolutely unavoidable, TeX/LaTex files will also be accepted, but only when they are accompanied by a PDF file and, if possible, a text-only file.

Copyright Agreement. By submitting an article, the author confirms and guarantees on behalf of him-/herself and any coauthors that he or she holds all copyright in and titles to the submitted contribution, including any figures, photographs, line drawings, plans, maps, sketches and tables, and that the article and its contents do not infringe in any way on the rights of third parties.
The author agrees, upon acceptance of the article for publication, to transfer to the publisher the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute the article and its contents, both physically and in non-physical, electronic, and other form, in the journal to which it has been submitted and in other independent publications, with no limits on the number of copies or on the form or the extent of the distribution. These rights are transferred for the duration of copyright as defined by international law. Furthermore, the author transfers to the publisher the following exclusive rights to the article and its contents:
1. The rights to produce advance copies, reprints, or offprints of the article, in full or in part, to undertake or allow translations into other languages, to distribute other forms or modified versions of the article, and to produce and distribute summaries or abstracts.

3. The rights to store the article and its content in machine-readable or electronic form on all media (such as computer disks, compact disks, magnetic tape), to store the article and its contents in online databases belonging to the publisher or third parties for viewing or downloading by third parties, and to present or reproduce the article or its contents on visual display screens, monitors, and similar devices, either directly or via data transmission.
4. The rights to reproduce and distribute the article and its contents by all other means, including photomechanical and similar processes (such as photocopying or facsimile), and as part of so-called document delivery services.
5. The right to transfer any or all rights mentioned in this agreement, as well as rights retained by the relevant copyright clearing centers, including royalty rights to third parties.
