About the journal

 Environmental and Resource Economics

The primary concern of Environmental & Resource Economics (ERE) is the application of economic theory and methods to environmental issues and problems that require detailed analysis in order to improve management strategies. The contemporary environmental debate is in a constant state of flux and new or relatively unexplored topics are continually emerging. The Journal provides a forum for the further exploration of the causes, consequences and policy responses linked to these topics, across a range of spatial and temporal scales up to the global dimension. Contributions to the Journal should directly or indirectly be relevant to the policy formulation and application process. Areas of particular interest include:

evaluation and development of instruments of environmental policy;
cost-benefit and cost effectiveness analysis;
sectoral environmental policy impact analysis;
modelling and simulation;
institutional arrangements;
resource pricing and the valuation of environmental goods;
environmental quality indicators.

The editors wish to encourage a pluralistic approach to both theoretical and applied contributions. The publication of empirically based, policy-oriented research is given a high priority in the Journal in order to further critical discussion. Environmental & Resource Economics will also accept papers with an interdisciplinary approach, where this helps to improve knowledge of the real world complexities present, provided that the analysis retains links to or components of economic thinking. The Journal is required reading for economists, economic geographers and other academics, professionals and officials with a working interest in environmental matters.

Instructions to Authors
Online Submission of Manuscripts
Springer now offers authors, editors and reviewers of Environmental & Resource Economics the option of using our fully web-enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible (no postal delays!), we encourage authors to submit manuscripts online to the journal¡®s editorial office. Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time. Manuscripts should be submitted to: http://eare.edmgr.com

The online manuscript submission and review system for Environmental and Resource Economics offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTex; for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.

NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also in printout + disk.
In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript on line, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on ¡°CONTACT US¡± from the tool bar.
Electronic figures
Electronic versions of your figures must be supplied. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica.
Colour figures
Colour figures may be printed at the author¡¯s expense. Please indicate at submission which figures should be printed in colour, the number of colour pages you prefer and to which address we can send the invoice. In addition, please specify if figures are to appear together on a colour page.
Language
We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language.
Reviewing procedure
Environmental and Resource Economics follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested to place their name and affiliation on a separate page. Self-identifying citations and references in the article text should either be avoided or left blank when manuscripts are first submitted. Authors are responsible for reinserting self-identifying citations and references when manuscripts are prepared for final submission.
Submission of Manuscript
Leave enough margin on all sides to permit remarks by the reviewers. Please double-space all materials, including footnotes, endnotes, and references. Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing the title, the authors, the affiliation, a complete address of the corresponding author, a short and informative abstract of 100 to 200 words, and five to ten key words in alphabetical order, suitable for indexing. Quoted passages of more than 40 words should be set off from the text by indenting the left-hand margin, as a block quotation. Abbreviations, if any, should be listed on a separate line after the key words.
Formulas
Formulas should be legible. It is extremely important that all symbols and letters are identified and that the required style of appearance of such symbols is indicated, e.g., bold face, italics, script, outline, fracture, etc. Sub− and−superscripts should be clearly marked wherever confusion might arise. Identify in the margin any symbols that might be confused with similar symbols.
Figures
All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.
Tables
Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.
Headings and Subheads
A clear distinction into main headings and sub−(sub)heads is requested throughout the text, if more than one degree (level) occurs. First level headings: roman bold, one line of extra space above and below. Second level: italics, one line of space above and below; Third level: italics, 1 line of space above, no space below; Fourth level: italics, text runs on after the full stop.
Notes and References
Notes should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text and grouped in Notes section, and placed before References. References should be listed in alphabetical order in the References section, and follow the Notes. Examples:

(Smith 1978) (Pratt 1975 a, b; Flores et al. 1992).
Cross Referencing
Cross references may also be used to shorten repeated listing of the same book, such as a multiauthor book from which several authors¡® contributions are cited.
Appendix
Any supplementary material (e.g. mathematical proofs or description of experimental procedures) can be attached to an Appendix, and placed after Notes and before References. Excessively long Appendices should be revised by the author and reduced to a more condensed form. When more than one appendix appears in the paper, they should be numbered or designated by letters and each should be given a title as well. The text of appendices should be set in smaller type than the text proper.
Copyright
Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.
Permissions
It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for quotations from unpublished material, and for the reprinting of illustrations or tables from unpublished or copyrighted material.
Statement of exclusive submission
The first page should include the following statement: ¡¯¡¯This paper has not been submitted elsewhere in identical or similar form, nor will it be during the first three months after its submission to the Publisher.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e−mail. Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours.
Offprints
Fifty offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints (both hard copies and PDF files) can be ordered when proofs are returned.
Page charges and color illustrations
No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. Color illustrations are published at the author¡®s expense only.
Springer Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please click on the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
