About

I. Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies is the successor of the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies (2001-2013) and is published biannually (in March and September) in one volume per year by the International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health. The journal is devoted to the advancement of the clinical theory and practice of evidence-based psychotherapies (EBP) (e.g., evidence-based psychological assessments, evidence-based psychological treatments). The journal publishes original papers dealing with EBP and psychology, psychiatry, the medical and mental specialties, and allied areas of science. Submissions include (1) articles referring to clinical and experimental studies, discussions of theory, and systematic reviews for inclusion in Article Section, (2) articles referring to clinical discussions/developments for inclusion in the Clinical Forum Section, and (3) commentaries, letters to the editor, reviews and abstracts of books, tapes, and films, salient findings in EBP, and other information relevant to the journal’s goal for inclusion in the Development and Resources Section. Finally, the journal seeks to publish special issues devoted to topics of particular interest, suggestions for which are welcomed by the Editor.

 II. EDITORIAL (March 2014 issue)

Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies (JEBP) is the formal continuator of the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies (JCBP) (2001-2013) that was the official publication of the International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health. A part of the JCBP (and its board) – more classical cognitive-behavioral therapy oriented – merged in 2013 with the Journal of Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (published by Springer).

The International Institute for the Advanced Study of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health has decided to change the name of the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies into the Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies to better reflect the evolution of the field of clinical psychology and psychotherapy, including the evolution of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Indeed, although CBT remains the prototype of an evidence-based psychotherapy, other psychotherapy approaches started to adhere and/or be included in the evidence-based paradigm. Moreover, CBT today is very diverse and therefore the new Journal aims to be inclusive of all CBT approaches: not only the classical “waves” (i.e., behavior and cognitive-behavioral therapies), but also the new third “wave” CBT (i.e., acceptance and mindfulness-based therapies).

Thus, the new name of the Journal is more suited to reflect the dynamism and the state of the art in the field of psychotherapy. It will continue to promote the Eastern/Central European activity in the field at an international level, but with an explicitly open and encouraging attitude for publications all over the world (indeed, more than 60% of the former international publications of the JCBP came from western Europe, USA, Asia etc.). Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies (JEBP) will have almost the same board as JCBP and will be published by the same publisher (PsyTech). Moreover, it will remain the official publication of the International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health, but will be also assumed by the Romanian Association of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies (a member of the European Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies) to better increase its visibility and impact.

We believe that with this new name, based on the same committed team and scientific environment, the Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies (JEBP) will increase its visibility and impact in the psychotherapy community worldwide.

III. EDITORIAL (September 2011 issue)

Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies: Remarks After a Decade of Hard Work, Fight for Research Reform and Excellence!

I would like to thank the editor of Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies (http://jebp.psychotherapy.ro) for inviting me to write this editorial, now that the Journal celebrates a decade of existence (September 2001 – September 2011).

As described in the journal, Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies is published biannually (in March and September) in one volume per year, by the International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health (IIAS of PAMH). The journal is devoted to the advancement of the clinical theory and practice of cognitive and behavioral psychotherapies (CBT) and other evidence-based psychological assessments and interventions. The journal publishes original papers dealing with CBT and psychology, psychiatry, the medical and mental specialties, other evidence-based psychotherapies, and allied areas of science.

1. A brief history

1.1. The first wave (2001-2004): Reconnecting Romanian psychology with the international arena by setting the new standards.

I was the first (and founding) editor of the Romanian Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies, first published in 2001. It started as the official publication of the Romanian Association of Hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy (now the Romanian Association of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies; http://cbt.psihoterapie.ro). The financial support for the first issue was offered by the Albert Ellis Institute, USA. The Journal was focused mainly on research from Romania. It had a limited circulation, being published in maximum 100 copies, freely distributed to the members of the Romanian Association of CBT and/or to some members of Psychology Departments in Romania. The editorial mistakes, inevitable in these early stages of publication, were corrected by errata, as inserted sheets. Taking into account that Psychology was a new science in Romania (having been forbidden during the Communist Regime, until 1989), the Journal had the mission of setting the standards and good practices for international publication and of reconnecting Romania psychology with the international arena. Indeed, taking into account the difficult situation of the field after the Revolution of 1989 (e.g., many professional did not speak foreign languages, had no access to scientific literature, had no professional organizations and/or standards for research and publication), we implemented internationally accepted procedures for helping the development and dissemination of scientific publications at an international level (e.g., “fair use”, “limited circulation”) and rigorous research and publication standards (e.g., APA publication standards) for connecting the field to top international practices. Due to the high standards promoted by the editorial board and to the stubbornness of implementing international practices (e.g., peer-review, quality publications), despite many difficulties and criticisms from the old establishments, used to publishing based on notoriety and influence rather than on “peer-review”, in 2004 the Journal (March issue) was abstracted by PsycINFO and IBSS.

Between 2001-2006, based on the limited circulation principle (see the APA standards of publication, the 5th edition) and respecting the ethical guidelines (e.g., avoiding copyright issues), we allowed the authors of the articles in the Journal to publish their articles in other high impact factor Journals (only in Web of Science) and/or in international books (only published by relevant international publishers), in order to increase articles visibility; in this case, the authors were asked to send us a note about the republication so that we can mention this on Journal’s website.

Starting with 2007, when the Journal was already indexed both by abstracts in Web of Science and full text in EBSCO/ProQuest, the limited circulation principle was not longer applied. Therefore, since 2007, the articles can be fully published in international books only as republication material (mentioning the Journal as the original source). Also, since 2007, we accept the republication of an article in other Journals only in special conditions, justified by targeting a new audience (mentioning the Journal as the original source). All these constraints do not exclude the fair use of the published material and/or the use of the publications or parts of them in derivatives works (mentioning the Journal as the original source).

1.2. The second wave (2004-2007): Integration of the Eastern/Central European research in the field in the international arena.

In 2004 we took a step forward. We decided to change the name of the Journal to Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies (September issue). We expanded the board to include new distinguished international professionals (e.g., highly cited researchers) from all over the world to better reflect the Journals’ international ambitions. A special attention was given to including key professionals in the field form Eastern/Central Europe. The Journal became the official publication of the International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health, a world-class research institute (http://www.psychotherapy.ro) and its new publisher became the ASCR Press, press of the Society of Cognitive Science. The number of articles per Journal issue started to increase. Due to this policy, between 2004 and 2007 the Journal was indexed (full text) in EBSCO and ProQuest (March 2007 issue), becoming the reference standard for research in Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapies in Eastern and Central Europe.

1.3. The third wave (2007-2009): An international and visible Journal, with a impact on the international arena.

Starting with 2007, the Journal has evolved to a new level. A new associate editor was appointed (Dr. Aurora Szentagotai) with a clear mission/program of attracting more international publications. In 2007 (March issue) the Journal was indexed in Web of Science (Social Sciences Citation Indexed) and in 2008 (March issue), in SCOPUS. Due to the international visibility and impact of the Journal international publishers (e.g., Rutledge Mental Health and Guilford Press) started to advertise in the Journal.

1.4. The fourth wave (2009 onwards): Towards a top, world-class Journal.

Starting with the March issue of 2009 a new editor was appointed (Dr. Aurora Szentagotai) and since 2010 the Journal has been published by PsyTech, a new publisher that aims to make the publication and dissemination of the Journal its priority. Moreover, while I am writing this editorial, I know that the editor is discussing the possibility of the Journal being published by an international publisher, with the idea of definitively establishing it among world-class clinical Journals, not only visible, but with strong impact, a real standards and trends-setter in the field.

2. A SWOT analysis of the Journal

2.1. Strengths

  • This is the only Psychology journal in Romania and the only Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy journal in Eastern/Central Europe indexed by Web of Science;
  • It set standards of publication and research in psychology in Eastern/Central Europe. Practically, it has changed the face of psychology research in Romania, by promoting the need for international standards, visibility and impact;
  • It is a serious and rigorous peer-reviewed Journal, with a rejection rate close to 60% (Web of Science indicators 2007-2011: average citation per item: 0.61).

2.2. Weaknesses

  • The international top professionals in the field do not regularly send manuscripts to the Journal
    • To correct this situation we need to: (a) target directly top research groups; and (b) make the articles of the Journal accessible to them;
  • The scientometric indicators of the Journal are not yet world-class
    • To correct this situation, a specific program to increase scientometric indicators (e.g., impact factor, Hirsch index, citations excluding self-citations) is being implemented (e.g., by targeting key contributors from competitive research groups);
  • Previously, errata were not published in the Journal but were added as inserted sheets; therefore, several errata were not indexed by databases
    • To correct this situation all errata, from the beginning of the Journal, were republished in the Journal.

2.3. Opportunities

  • Being the only Journal on this topic in Eastern/Central Europe indexed in major international databases, it can become a pole of excellence reflecting not only top international research but also rigorous and specific research from this part of the world;
  • It is still a dynamic Journal whose impact factor is not yet stabilized. Therefore, plans for new creative policies can be implemented and tested to increase the impact of the Journal;
  • We are discussing the possibility of the Journal being published by a top publisher in Europe.

2.4. Threats

  • Competition among various cognitive-behavioral Journals
    • To counter this threat, we extended the objectives of the Journal, to cover evidence-based clinical practice and clinical cognitive sciences in relation with psychotherapy (theory and practice);
  • Open source and online clinical Journals
    • To counter this threat, the Journal allows access to full text articles on its website, except the current issue. Moreover, we allow our articles to be republished in other Journals, to target new audiences and/or in books, thus contributing to the dissemination of the scientific information.

3. Conclusions

I am convinced that the publication of the Journal of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychotherapies was a key factor in the reform of psychology research in Romania and in psychotherapy in Eastern/Central Europe, and still fills a gap in the scientific literature on this topic. Indeed, although it now includes publications of top authors from all over the world, it also specifically promotes international level, rigorous research from Eastern/Central Europe. Thus, it is an important player on the international arena, while preserving its regional specificity and diversity, continuously challenging us to make it more visible and raise its impact. This is the beauty and uniqueness of this Journal!

      Publication Policies.

      The Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies requires authors to comply with APA Ethical Standards for research and publication regarding:

      1. informed consent;
      2. human and animal rights; and
      3. conflict of interest (for details please see the APA Ethical Principles).

      Authors are required to state in writing that they have complied with APA ethical standards in the treatment of their sample, human or animal.

      All contributing authors are required to reveal any possible conflict of interest in the conduct and reporting of research (e.g., financial interests in a test procedure, funding by pharmaceutical companies for drug research).

      For articles published between 2001-2006, based on the limited circulation principle (see the APA standards of publication, the 5th edition) and respecting the ethical guidelines (e.g., avoiding copyright issues), we still allow the authors of the articles in the Journal to publish their articles in other high impact factor Journals (only in Web of Science) and/or in international books (only published by relevant international publishers), in order to increase articles visibility; in this case, the authors are asked to send us a note about this publication so that we can mention this on Journal’s website.

      1. Introducere:

      Productiile stiintifice constituie, pentru unii din mediul academic, calcaiul lui Ahile. Daca cei din mediul economic sunt atacati, pe drept sau nu, ca “fura”, cei din mediul juridic si politic ca “sunt corupti”, cei din mediul academic, sunt cel mai des atacati, pe drept sau nu, cu acuzatia de “plagiat”. Plagiatul a fost definit precis si detaliat în multe lucrari de specialitate si în ghiduri accesibile “online”, asa ca nu insistam asupra lui aici.

      În ultimul timp a aparut însa la orizont o noua amenintare la adresa bunei redactari a lucrarilor stiintifice si anume “autoplagiatul”. Este o amenintare foarte noua, dar înca ambigua; asadar, cunoasterea ei este fundamentala atât pentru cei care o utilizeaza cât si pentru cei care sunt “atacati” pe nedrept cu ea, ca sa se poata apara. În plus, întelegerea conceptului de “autoplagiat” este foarte importanta pentru cei care publica frecvent si lucreaza în mediul academic, precum si pentru editorii revistelor de specialitate si pentru studenti.

      Ca responsabili de o revista indexata national si international am simtit nevoia sa atragem atentia potentialilor colaboratori asupra acestui nou concept din domeniul publicatiilor academice.

      Plagiatul este definit (cf. DEX) ca „…ceva care a fost însusit – integral sau partial – de la altcineva si prezentat drept creatie personala…”. In acest cadru, autoplagiatul s-ar referi la “…ceva pe care ni l-am însusit – integral sau partial – de la noi si l-am prezentat drept creatie personala…”; evident ca în acest context conceptul de autoplagiat este fara sens, unii autori afirmand ca nici nu ar trebui sa discutam despre el (vezi Broome, 2004).

      Acestea fiind spuse, si în ciuda controverselor din literatura asupra conceptului de autoplagiat (daca el exista sau nu), trebuie mentionat faptul ca în ultimii ani a aparut în mediul academic o preocupare mai atenta privind acest concept, din perspectiva etica. Aceasta se întâmpla deoarece mediul academic este prin excelenta unul în care, în scopul vizibilitatii si consistentei mesajului stiintific, reluam adesea idei si texte proprii în lucrarile noastre noi. Dam câteva exemple de astfel de cutume academice bine încetatenite:

      • Cei mai multi autori, dupa ce îsi prezinta teza de doctorat o publica si sub forma unei carti si/sau a unuia sau mai multor articole;
      • De asemenea, dupa ce se prezinta o lucrare la o conferinta, ea se trimite adesea spre publicare într-o revista sau carte;
      • Exista cutuma fundamentala mediului academic de a crea opere derivate. Operele derivate sunt acele opere care sunt create pornind de la una sau mai multe lucrari stiintifice preexistente si orice alte transformari ale unei opere stiintifice care reprezinta o munca intelectuala de creatie (cf. Legii Dreptului de Autor). În mediul academic cele mai frecvente opere derivate sunt lucrarile de tip cursuri universitare. Deoarece ofera o analiza mai globala, ele includ adesea texte din carti de specialitate publicate anterior de autor. În plus, constituindu-se în bibliografie de specialitate, lucrarile cu caracter de curs au adesea parti comune daca cursurile respective sunt cu referire la domenii apropiate sau la subdomenii ale aceluiasi domeniu; pentru domeniul de intersectare se prefera publicarea textului în format standard pentru a pastra consistenta discursului, a familiariza studentii cu texte standard asupra tematicii si a stimula diseminarea corecta a continutului sau.
      • Unii autori publica un articol în mai multe locuri pentru a creste vizibilitatea textului, mai ales în conditiile în care revistele sunt din tari diferite, sunt publicate in limbi diferite si/sau se adreseaza unui public tinta foarte diferit.

      În toate aceste situatii se poate vorbi în mod responsabil de autoplagiat – ca frauda academica – doar în situatia în care nu exista transparenta asupra faptului ca materialul prezentat a mai fost expus anterior de acelasi autor (vezi în Anexa Hexam si Roig). În mediul academic solutia recomandata pentru aceste situatii, în scopul de a evita autoplagiatul, este sa se promoveze aceasta transparenta, dublata mereu de asigurarea ca se respecta “copyright-ul”(vezi în Anexa Hexam si Roy; Editorial Policy, JMWH). În cazul lucrarilor cu caracter nestiintific – de opinie, atitudine sociala – publicate în reviste si cotidiane de profil, problema autoplagiatului nu se pune atât de stringent deoarece: (1) un asemenea text este de dorit sa ajunga la un public cât mai larg si/sau (2) problema transparentei este din start satisfacuta prin audienta mare de care se bucura aceste publicatii; trebuie însa sa fim atenti aici la problema dreptului de “copyright”.

      În cazul unei carti proprii care include texte din lucrari anterioare ale autorului se recomanda sa se mentioneze explicit ca lucrarea noua include texte publicate anterior si/sau sa se citeze lucrarile anterioare în cea noua, pentru a-i permite cititorului sa consulte, daca doreste, ambele lucrari; daca nu se face acest lucru, avem o forma de autoplagiat care se numeste “reciclarea textului” (text recycling), care trebuie evitata.

      În cazul unui articol bazat pe o conferinta trebuie precizata conferinta la care a fost prezentat, altfel avem din nou de a face cu “reciclarea textului”.

      Daca un articol este trimis spre publicare simultan în doua reviste diferite si/sau daca un articol publicat anterior se intentioneaza a fi publicat si în alta revista atunci editorii acestor reviste trebuie sa fie informati, iar daca ei hotarasc, prin prisma criteriilor prezentate mai sus, ca asta este în beneficul cititorilor atunci acest lucru este acceptabil (facându-se însa public acest lucru prin toate mijloacele posibile); daca nu se face acest lucru atunci este vorba despre publicare duplicata (duplicate publication), respectiv publicare redundanta (redundant publication), ambele fiind forme de autoplagiat care trebuie evitate.

      Autoplagiatul sub forma “reciclarii textului” apare si în contextul în care studentii îsi prezinta acelasi text la cursuri sau în situatii diferite, fara a informa profesorul asupra acestui fapt.

      Vom prezenta în continuare, ca analize de caz, modul în care editorul revistei (Daniel David), cadru didactic si autor care produce lucrari de tip curs universitar si articole pentru studenti, a implementat aceste recomandari, urmand modelul din Anexa (Editorial Policy, JMWH), în activitatea proprie.

      2. Analize de Caz (text Daniel David):

      Carti:

      (1) “Full Disclosure”. In partea de introducere a lucrarilor mele noi in care am inclus si texte mai vechi, pentru a evita “autoplagiatul”, am mentionat de obicei foarte clar si explicit faptul ca acestea includ texte scrise si publicate de mine anterior:

      “…Ideile cuprinse în acest volum sunt atât o sinteza a literaturii de specialitate, cât si o reevaluare a unor publicatii proprii nationale si internationale. Integrarea lor în acest volum ofera o perspectiva comprehensiva si coerenta asupra domeniului clinic…” (David, 2006; Psihologie Clinica, Polirom).

      (2) “Copyright and Disclosure”. Am cerut acordul ca textele publicate anterior sa poata fi reproduse în alta lucrare si, din nou, am prezentat explicit acest lucru în noua lucrare:

      “…Multumesc editurilor…. care mi-au permis sa utilizez fragmente din lucrarile publicate de-a lungul timpului la aceste edituri…” (David, 2006; Psihologie Clinica, Polirom).

      (3) “Referencing”. Lucrarile anterioare din care am preluat diverse texte sunt incluse în referintele bibliografice ale lucrarilor noi în care am inclus aceste texte, pentru a asigura transparenta si a permite cititorului sa consulte ambele lucrari daca doreste.

      Acestea fiind spuse, mai adaug ca atunci când lucrarile noi preiau texte din lucrarile proprii mai vechi, ele (1) ar fi bine sa includa textele vechi, adesea dezvoltate si/sau usor prelucrate, pentru o mai buna receptare, pe baza sugestiilor primite anterior de la cititori; (2) ar fi bine sa includa texte vechi prezentate adesea în contexte noi în care functia lor cognitiva este diferita (spre exemplu, acelasi studiu de caz este prezentat în lucrari cu tematica si titlu diferit ca: (a) metodologie de cercetare, (b) raport clinic sau (c) exemplificare a interventiilor cognitiv-comportamentale); si (3) TREBUIE sa includa mereu si texte absolut noi care nu se regasesc în lucrarile anterioare; altfel lucrarea este o reeditare a unei lucrari vechi sau o antologie de texte publicate anterior. Cât din text trebuie sa fie absolut nou nu se specifica în literatura dar el trebuie (Cf. Legii Dreptului de Autor) sa fie suficient pentru a justifica un nou efort de creatie care duce la o opera derivata originala. Respectând aceste conditii se dezvolta în mediul academic opere derivate originale, cu tematica si format nou, respectând deontologia profesionala.

      Articole:

      Dupa ce am publicat un articol într-o revista din tara, el a fost publicat si într-o revista din strainatate pe considerentul ca: (1) distributia revistei din tara este limitata; (2) datele obtinute erau de interes international; si (3) existau modalitati usor diferite de interpretare a datelor. Toate aceste lucruri au fost discutate si agreate între editorii celor doua reviste si facute publice prin: (1) pastrarea exacta a titlului si a rezumatului accesibile public; si (2) postarea pe site-ul revistei care a publicat initial studiul si care avea dreptul de ”copyright”, a informatiilor ca: (a) transfera dreptul de “copyright” revistei în care va fi republicat studiul; si (b) ca studiul a fost republicat.

      3. Concluzii si Discutii:

      Acuzatia de plagiat este foarte serioasa. Daca în cazul acestuia criteriile sunt clar precizate si exista norme si sanctiuni, în cazul autoplagiatului lucrurile sunt abia la început. Nu exista înca norme si sanctiuni clare, domeniul fiind în etapa de elaborarea a unor recomandari mai riguroase. Speram ca materialul prezentat aici, împreuna cu referintele bibliografice, vor ajuta mediul academic din România sa abordeze problema autoplagiatului în mod corect atunci când îsi redacteaza lucrarile.

      “…In writing, self-plagiarism occurs when authors reuse their own previously written work or data in a ‘new’ written product without letting the reader know that this material has appeared elsewhere. According to Hexam (1999; University of Calgary), “… the essence of self-plagiarism is [that] the author attempts to deceive the reader…”…”.
