Instructions to Authors
1 Legal requirements
The authors guarantee that their papers have not been and will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright owners, that the rights of third parties will not be violated, and that the publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
Authors wishing to include figures or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
Manuscripts must be accompanied by the ”Copyright Transfer Statement”. The form can be obtained from springer.com/journal/11628.
2 Editorial procedure
The Editors reserve the right to return to the authors any manuscript that in their opinion is not suitable for publication in Service Business, without expressly stipulating the reasons for doing so. Under no circumstances the identity of the reviewers and referees will be disclosed to the authors or to any other third party not involved in the editorial process.
Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please connect directly to the site and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.
3 Manuscript preparation
Form and content of the manuscript of the accepted paper should be carefully checked to exclude the need for later corrections.
- Title page. The title page should include:
- The name(s) of the author(s)
- A concise and informative title
- The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)
- The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the communicating author
- Abstract. Each paper must be preceded by an abstract presenting the most important results and conclusions in no more than 100 words.
- Keywords. Three to five keywords should be supplied after the Abstract for indexing purposes.
- Equations, calculations, and mathematical proofs. Number consecutively only those equations that are referenced in the text. Indent equations and place numbers in parentheses at the right margin. Type equations clearly with one space before and after mathematical function signs except in subscripts and superscripts. Type the main components, the equal sign, and the fraction bar on the main line of typing. Write on one line mathematical expressions used within a paragraph.
In results of calculations, keep number of significant digits constant, not exceeding four.
Mathematical proofs should appear in an appendix. The main body of the text should focus on the thrust, structure and economic intuition of the argumentation.
- Acknowledgements. These should be as brief as possible. Any grant that requires acknowledgement should be mentioned. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.
- References. The list of References should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Personal communications should only be mentioned in the text.
A paper published online but not yet in print can be cited using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
If available, the DOI can also be added at the end of references already published.
Examples:
Journals: names and initials of all authors; full title of paper cited; title of journal; boldface volume number; first and last page numbers; year in parentheses; DOI, if applicable.
Welbourne T (2006) Learning about leadership and firm growth through monthly data collection and dialogue with enrepreneurs. Int Entrep Manag J 2: 39-55. DOI 10.1007/s11365-006-7088-5
Books: names and initials of all authors; full title; edition; place of publication; publisher; year
Alon I, McKee D (2006) How do franchisors evaluate foreign markets. In : Alon I (ed) Service franchising a global perspective. Springer, New York, pp 93-102
In the text as well as in footnotes, references should be cited by author and year (e.g. Welbourne 2006; Alon and McKee 2006; Resnick et al. 2002). They should be listed in alphabetical order in the reference list.
- Illustrations and Tables. All figures (photographs, graphs or diagrams) and tables should be cited in the text, and each numbered consecutively throughout. Lowercase letters (a, b etc.) should be used to identify figure parts.
Figure legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the illustrations. The legends should be placed at the end of the text.
Tables should have a title and a legend explaining any abbreviation used in that table. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data).
4 Technical instructions for preparing your manuscript
The electronic version of the accepted article should include the original source (including all style files and figures) and a PDF version of the compiled submission. It is essential that electronic source version and readable version are identical.
Springer offers a template that can be used with Word 2000 and higher versions (Springer.com – see our service For Authors).
Authors who prepare their papers with LaTeX are encouraged to use Springer’s general macro package available at Springer.com (see our service For Authors).
5 Proofreading
Authors should make their proof corrections on a printout of the pdf file or use the online correction facilities provided with the proof. They should check that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. The author is entitled to formal corrections only. Substantial changes in content, e.g. new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. In such a case please contact the Editorial Office before returning the proofs to the publisher. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
6 Offprints
Twenty-five (25) offprints of each contribution are supplied free of charge. If you wish to order additional offprints please return the order form with the corrected proofs. One complimentary copy of the concerning issue is supplied for each author.
Does Springer provide English language support?
Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be checked by our copyeditors for spelling and formal style. This may not be sufficient if English is not your native language and substantial editing would be required. In that case, you may want to have your manuscript edited by a native speaker prior to submission. A clear and concise language will help editors and reviewers concentrate on the scientific content of your paper and thus smooth the peer review process.
The following editing service provides language editing for scientific articles in all areas Springer publishes in.
Use of an editing service is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of acceptance for publication.
Please contact the editing service directly to make arrangements for editing and payment.
