Instructions to Authors
Editorial Policy
The Review of Policy Research (RPR) publishes research and technical articles produced by social and natural scientists interested in advancing the state-of-the-art in basic and applied policy science. RPR encourages submission of manuscripts for peer preview that reveal and analyze public policy processes and evaluate the outcomes of particular policies related to science, technology and environmental (STE) issues. RPR also encourages comparative and international research. Submissions examining the convergence and divergence of STE policy within and between local, sub-national, regional, and national jurisdictions and authorities are strongly encouraged. At the same time, manuscripts analyzing single issues or single jurisdictions remain critical to developing deeper understandings of the interrelationships between social, political and economic forces influencing STE outcomes and are welcome. RPR also welcomes theoretical work that addresses the logic of policy inquiry and policy practice. RPR is interested in work at scientific and technical frontiers that meets the highest standards of analytical rigor and that also has practical implications.
RPR is a journal of the Policy Studies Organization - an interdisciplinary group affiliated with the American Political Science Association (APSA). It is also the official journal of the Science, Technology and Environmental Politics (STEP) section of APSA.
Please contact the Editor, Christopher Gore, with questions about contributions or potential contributions: chris.gore@politics.ryerson.ca.
Types of Contributions
Original Articles: This section features full-length submissions that present original research, analysis and/or theory of STE issues. Original articles generally have a principal goal of sharing new knowledge, new approaches, or new understandings of STE issues.
Review Articles: This section features full-length, scholarly reviews of STE issues, themes or related theory. Review articles have a principal goal of providing a comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge of an issue, while also advancing arguments about ways that knowledge can be enhanced in future. All original and review articles are double-blind peer reviewed. Generally articles are sent to two reviewers.
Viewpoints and Perspectives: This section features short (1000-2000 words), solicited contributions, which aim to generate debate on ST&E issues, while advocating policy and research directions. Authors interested in contributing to this section should contact the Editor.
Book Reviews: For book reviews relating to environmental policy, please contact Henrik Selin, Environment Book Review Editor, selin@bu.edu. For book reviews relating to science and technology issues, please contact Adam Thorn, current Managing Editor, adam.thorn@ryerson.ca.
Manuscript Submission:
All manuscripts and editorial correspondence should be submitted as an MS Word document through our online submission process at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rpr.
If authors prefer to submit using a different program, i.e., LaTeX, please contact the Managing Editor, Adam Thorn, prior to submitting: adam.thorn@ryerson.ca.
Corresponding authors should indicate whether they are submitting an original or review article upon submission.
Manuscripts must be formatted in a 12-point font, double-spaced with 1' margins. Authors and co-authors must not be identifiable in the body of the text, and the title of the manuscript should appear on the first page of the text. For all submissions, footnotes, references, tables, figures and charts must follow the main body of the text. Tables, figures and charts must be numbered consecutively, clearly titled and the author must specify the position in the text where they are to be placed. Camera-ready copy and computer files of all figures, tables and charts are required upon notification of acceptance for publication.
Footnotes are not used for citation purposes, but for substantive comments. They should be identified by consecutive number in the text and grouped at the end of the text. References follow the main body of the text and should appear in alphabetical order by first author's surname. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) is the style guide used for references, footnotes, endnotes and tables. Manuscripts not in proper format will be returned for correction. Authors are requested to pay particular attention to making citations in notes and references complete and accurate.
Each manuscript must contain a short (150 words) abstract. In general, RPR considers manuscripts up to 12,000 words in length. RPR does not consider manuscripts submitted to other publications; submission of a manuscript to RPR implies that the author has not submitted the manuscript to another journal.
