About the journal
German History is the journal of the German History Society and was first published in 1984. The journal offers refereed research articles, dissertation abstracts, news of interest to German historians, conference reports and a substantial book review section in four issues a year. German History’s broad ranging subject areas and high level of standards make it the top journal in its field and an essential addition to any German historian’s library.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission Guidelines:
All articles and book reviews should be submitted as a Word-compatible file via the online submission system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/gerhis
Any editorial or submission queries should be sent to the editors.
The Editors will notify authors as soon as possible about the acceptability of a paper, but will not enter into correspondence about papers considered unsuitable for publication. Neither the Editors nor the publisher accept responsibility for the view of authors expressed in their contribution. Authors may not submit to German History a typescript that is under consideration elsewhere. Articles should not normally exceed 10,000. Authors of accepted papers should submit an abstract (up to 250 words) for publication with the article.
Typescript layout
All material should be on A4 or quarto paper, in double-spaced typing, and on one side of the page only. Ample margins should be left. Each page of the typescript should be numbered. In Notes and Reviews, all material should be incorporated into the text: there should be no footnotes. In articles, footnotes should be numbered consecutively and placed together in double-spaced typing on a separate page or pages at the end. In Notes and Reviews, the author's name should appear at the end on the right-hand side, with his/her institution on the left. In articles, the author’s name and institution should appear at the beginning, immediately under the title. Quotation marks should be single; double quotation marks should be used only to indicate one quotation within another.

Language Editing
Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. If you would like information about one such service please click here. There are other specialist language editing companies that offer similar services and you can also use any of these. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services.
Illustrations
All maps, diagrams, figures and graphs should be submitted in the form of completed artwork suitable for reproduction. They should be separate from the typescript (with a list of captions on a separate sheet), but their place in the text should be marked.
No illustration (including caption) will be given more space than the text area of the journal page, i.e. 191 mm x 112 mm. Figures should ideally be drawn for a reduction of one-third, i.e. 3:2.
All copyright permission must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author; this includes applications and payments to DACS, ARS and similar licensing agencies where appropriate. It is also the author's responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by particular institutions.
Permissions for Illustrations and Figures
In order to reproduce any third party material, including figures or tables, in an article authors must obtain permission from the copyright holder and be compliant with any requirements the copyright holder may have pertaining to this reuse.
When seeking to reproduce any kind of third party material authors should request the following:
(i) non-exclusive rights to reproduce the material in the specified article and journal;
(ii) electronic rights, preferably for use in any form or medium;
(iii) the right to use the material for the life of the work; and
(iv) world-wide English-language rights.

Authors should also include a statement indicating that permission has been obtained in the relevant legend/footnote and provide the Editorial Office with copies of any relevant paperwork.

Colour
Any figures submitted to the journal in colour can be published in colour online at no cost (unless the author specifically requests that their figures be in black and white online). Authors may choose to also publish their figures in colour in the print journal: you will be asked to approve this cost after your article is accepted for publication. Black and white figures will be printed without additional cost, but figures that may be converted from colour to black and white should be well prepared with high contrast, and must have a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch at their final size. Figure captions must be suitably worded to apply to both the print and online versions of the article. If applicable, you will be issued an invoice at the time of publication.
Note: Orders from the UK will be subject to the current UK VAT charge. For orders from elsewhere in the EU you or your institution should account for VAT by way of a reverse charge. Please provide us with your or your institution’s VAT number.
Tables
Tables should be typed on separate sheets. Indicate in the margin of the text where the tables should be placed. All costs for reproducing figures in colour must be met by the author.
References
These should be kept to the minimum. Books are italicized (underlined in typescript), e.g. F. L. Carsten, Princes and Parliaments in Germany (Oxford, 1959). In second and subsequent references to a work, an abbreviated title should be adopted, e.g. Carsten, Princes, p. 72. A reference to an article in a periodical should include (after the author's name and the title of the article and the title of the journal) the volume number (arabic), date in brackets, and relevant page numbers, e.g. 'The False Joseph II', Historical Journal, 18 (1975), 467-95.
Copyright
It is a condition of publication in GH that authors grant an exclusive licence to the Journal, which is operated on the Journal's behalf of the German History Society by the Publisher. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. It is essential that a completed licence is provided for each article. The author willbe sent a personalised link to the online licencing system when their paper is accepted for publication, which must be completed.
Alterations to articles
Any amendments or corrections should be sent to the Editors (or Review Editor) as soon as possible after any author receives notification of acceptance for publication of his/her article. Because of the high cost of correction, the Editors reserve the right to reject alterations in proof. To avoid delays in the production of the journal, contributors will be asked to return their proofs promptly. Proofs are not sent to authors of reviews.

Open Access Option for Authors
German History authors have the option to publish their paper under the Oxford Open initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. After your manuscript is accepted the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory licence to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged.
Oxford Open articles are published under Creative Commons licences. Authors publishing in German History can use the following Creative Commons licences for their articles:

Offprints
The corresponding author has the opportunity to order offprints of their article before the issue is printed, or copies of the printed issue in which the article will appear. 25 offprints will be provided free if they are claimed using the Oxford Journals Author Services site.
