About the journal

This multidisciplinary journal is based on the assumption that the critical issues pertaining to spatial cognition and computation lie at the intersection of a number of disciplines--in particular, cognitive psychology, computer science, geography, neuropsychology, and artificial intelligence. Recent years have seen a growth in the desire of these communities to share insights and results. The aim of the journal is to concentrate the presentation of research into spatial cognition and computation, and to explicitly foster an interdisciplinary dialogue. Spatial Cognition and Computation encourages the submission of articles on any topic in the area of spatial cognition and spatial computation. Research articles, empirical studies, integrative reviews of the literature, and shorter opinion pieces will be considered for publication.
Specific topics within the scope of the journal:
cognitive and computational models of spatial cognition;
navigation, environmental learning, and cognitive mapping;
cognitive development and representation of large scale space;
common sense and qualitative models of space;
robot navigation and wayfinding;
models and applications of spatial and diagrammatic reasoning;
visual languages, sign language, or visualization and spatial cognition;
cognitive theories of imageries and imaginal reasoning;
integration of vision and natural language processing;
representation and processing of spatial expressions and crosslinguistic issues in spatial language;
gestural analysis and multimodal interfaces; and
navigation and orientation in virtual environments and hypermedia.
Instructions to Authors
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Aims and Scope
Spatial Cognition and Computation, an interdisciplinary journal, is based on the assumption that the critical issues pertaining to spatial cognition and computation lie at the intersection of a number of disciplines—in particular, cognitive psychology, computer science, geography, linguistics, neuropsychology, and artificial intelligence. Recent years have seen a growth in the desire of these communities to share insights and results. The aim of the journal is to focus the presentation of research into spatial cognition and computation, and to explicitly encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue. Research articles, empirical studies, integrative reviews of the literature, and shorter opinion pieces will be considered for publication. Due to the range of academic disciplines, problems to be addressed by the research should be of a general interest, and authors are encouraged to present their ideas in a manner that is accessible to the entire journal readership. Proposals for single-topic issues will also be considered.
Submission of Manuscripts for Review
The journal receives all manuscript submissions electronically via its ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hspcc. ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid and easy submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as reviewing and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support. If you have any other requests, please contact the Editors-in-Chief, Anthony Cohn at a.g.cohn@Leeds.ac.uk or Dan Montello at montello@geog.uscb.edu
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts for review as a single PDF file. On submission, authors will be required to state that their manuscript has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
Submission of Accepted Manuscripts
Upon acceptance the authors should submit the source files, in MS Word or in Latex. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. As an exception to APA style, authors should provide numbered headings for each section of the article. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.

Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
300 dpi or higher
Sized to fit on journal page
EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print C online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print C online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print C Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short, descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.
Proofs and Reprints
Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Each corresponding author will receive 3 copies of the issue in which their article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication
