About the journal

Founded in the UK in 2002, Contemporary Political Theory has quickly established itself in the top rank of peer-reviewed journals in political theory and philosophy. Under new editorship in 2010, the journal is now based in both the USA and UK and reaches out to authors and readers in Europe, Asia and Oceania. It will continue, through a rigorous peer-review process, to seek out the very best work from the wide array of interests that constitute ‘contemporary political theory’: from post-structuralist thought to analytical philosophy, from feminist theory to international relations theory, from philosophies of the social sciences to the cultural construction of political theory itself. The editors welcome submissions from disciplines outside philosophy and political science, including but certainly not limited to: geography and anthropology, women’s studies and gender studies, cultural studies and economics, literary theory and film studies. Contemporary Political Theory publishes a challenging and eclectic mix of articles that contribute both to rethinking what political theory is and does, and to promoting lively engagements with contemporary global politics.
Contemporary Political Theory is abstracted and/or indexed in:

Instructions to Authors
Contemporary Political Theory welcomes manuscripts from a wide and diverse range of disciplines, theoretical orientations, and ideological perspectives. The journal’s editorial board construes ‘contemporary political theory’ broadly and seeks to publish work of the very highest quality. For more on the aims and scope of the journal, please see the about the journal page. For more details on the review process, please see our review policies.
All manuscripts submitted for review must be original work. No manuscript or portion thereof should currently be under review or already published elsewhere.

Manuscript Preparation
1) Anonymity, Abstract, and Title Page
Given the journal’s use of the double-blind review process, authors must prepare their manuscript anonymously. Aside from the title page (see below) please remove all identifying references: this includes both direct references to yourself and indirect references to colleagues, co-authors, and collaborators that would make it easy for a reader to deduce your identity. If the argument of the manuscript depends upon the citation of your own previous work, then please voice those citations in the third person and include the works in the reference list as you would for any other author.
The manuscript should be one single document, beginning with a title page that contains the following:
the names, full addresses, and institutional affiliation of all authors
an abstract of 150 to 200 words
a list of up to 6 keywords for indexing and abstracting
2) Length
Only rarely will the journal publish manuscripts longer than 8,000 words (including notes and references). Please do not submit longer manuscripts without first inquiring with the editors.
3) Citations
All submissions should follow the Harvard style of in-text parenthetical citations followed by a complete list of works cited at the end. For any needed clarification of the Harvard style, please consult one of the many online guides to the Harvard style or see previous issues of the journal. Please make certain that the list of works cited includes all works cited and has complete bibliographic details; do not simply import citations from an outside program without editing and proofing the list of works cited.
4) Notes
Explanatory notes should be kept to an absolute minimum. Final versions of articles must use endnotes, not footnotes.
5) Style
The primary style goals are clarity and consistency. Authors may use either UK or US spelling, but they must do so consistently. For punctuation, please follow the standards for UK English. This entails:
using single inverted commas (rather than double quotation marks) for quotes
placing all inverted commas within other punctuation
for the grammatical dash, using an en dash with a single space before and after the en dash (rather than an em dash without spaces)
Authors should strive for clarity and concision and should assume a broad, interdisciplinary audience of intelligent non-specialists. Therefore, manuscripts should explain complex concepts, clarify and introduce special terminology, and avoid gesturing allusively to broad and dense literatures that are not explicated fully in the text.
Finally, to ease the job of the reviewers, manuscripts should be double-spaced, with clear delineation of new paragraphs (please use either a double paragraph break [i.e. carriage return] or a single paragraph break followed by an indented first line, but do not use both), and with pages numbered consecutively.
6) Tables and Illustrations
Supply tables, figures and plates on separate pages at the end of the manuscript; clearly indicate the position of such figures on the page where they are introduced. Provide captions for figures and plates (including sources and acknowledgements) on a separate page. Present tables with the minimum use of horizontal rules (usually three are sufficient) and avoid vertical rules except in matrices.
Authors are requested to follow our instructions on how to prepare and submit their figures, for more information see www.palgrave-journals.com/pal/palgrave_artwork_guidelines.pdf.

Manuscript Submission
Contemporary Political Theory operates the submissions and review process strictly in digital only format. All manuscripts for review must be submitted as an attachment to an email sent to the editors at the following email address:
cptsubmissions@jhu.edu
Please do not send hard copies of manuscripts and please do not use any other email address for manuscript submission or correspondence concerning a manuscript under review.
In addition to the considerations noted above under manuscript preparation, please make certain that the digital file you send is anonymous. Anonymizing the digital file may require removing author information from the ‘properties’ field in MS Word and from the properties or ‘get info’ field of the file itself.
Please send only one file, as prepared above. The following formats are all acceptable, but are listed in preferred order:
PDF
Pages (.pages)
MS Word (.doc)
MS Word (.docx)
RTF
We regret that we cannot accept files in WordPerfect format (.wpd), Microsoft Works format (.wps) or any other formats not listed above

Publication Process for Accepted Articles
1) Accepted Articles
The final acceptance of most articles will still be subject to a set of revisions by the author. Once an author has submitted a final, revised version of the manuscript, those revisions will be reviewed by the editors. Once approved the author will be notified that his or her article has entered the queue for eventual publication in the journal. The time span from final acceptance to publication will vary based on a number of factors, but we typically publish on a first in first out basis and do our best to keep the time lag to a reasonable minimum.
2) Copyright Permissions
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from copyright holders for reproducing through any medium of communication those illustrations, tables, figures or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere. Add your acknowledgements to the manuscript, preferably in the form of an Acknowledgements section at the end. Credit the source and copyright of photographs or figures in the accompanying captions.
The journal’s policy is to own copyright in all contributions. Before publication authors assign copyright to the Publishers, but retain their rights to republish this material in other works written or edited only by themselves subject to full acknowledgement of the original source of publication.
The journal mandates the Copyright Clearance Center in the USA and the Copyright Licensing Agency in the UK to offer centralized licensing arrangements for photocopying in their respective territories.
Prior to publication all authors will be required to sign a printed copyright form and return it directly to Palgrave Macmillan.
3) Proofs
The author will be notified once an article goes into production. After the manuscript is initially copy-edited and proofed by Palgrave Macmillan, the corresponding author will be emailed a direct link to an online PDF proof of the article. Given production schedules it proves essential that the author correct the proofs within the time period indicated and return as directed. At the proofs stage, authors will not be allowed to make any revisions to the final, edited text, except where the copy-editor has requested clarification or where errors have been introduced.
4) Offprints
Corresponding authors will receive a final photo-ready PDF offprint of their article. This PDF offprint is provided for personal use. The corresponding author should share the PDF offprint with any co-authors.
All authors should be aware of the following conditions pertaining to the use of the PDF offprint. The PDF must not be placed on a publicly-available website for general viewing, or otherwise distributed without seeking our permission, as this would contravene our copyright policy and potentially damage the journal's circulation. Authors can always locate the most recent version of the Palgrave Macmillan copyright policy through this link.
