Aims and Scope

The British Journal of Educational Studies is one of the UK's foremost international education journals. It publishes scholarly, research-based articles on education which draw particularly upon historical, philosophical and sociological analysis and sources.

British Journal of Educational Studies provides:

  • Discussions of educational policy and educational issues that draw on the findings of research
  • Articles that review policy developments outside the UK, acknowledging the significance of cross-national policy influences
  • Contributions from many academic disciplines and a variety of perspectives
  • The most comprehensive book review section of any education journal published in the UK with, on average, sixteen reviews per issue

Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines

The British Journal of Educational Studies welcomes articles which discuss basic principles or topics of major importance, especially recent developments in education policy. A variety of perspectives is acceptable. Articles may be written from the point of view of educational philosophy, history, psychology, sociology, management, administration or comparative studies.

Manuscripts, which should not exceed 7000 words, including references, should be submitted online using Manuscript Central:

Manuscripts that do not conform to the requirements listed below will not be considered for publication. Articles under consideration by other journals or which draw substantially on material published elsewhere are not acceptable.

  • Articles should be submitted as Word documents.
  • They should be typed on one side of the paper, double-spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s), and the name of the institution where the work was carried out.
  • The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included
  • All pages should be numbered.
  • Footnotes to the text should be avoided. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract of about 60 words together with three to five keywords.
  • References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's surname (without initials), with the year of publication in parenthesis.
  • If several books/papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication.
  • The references should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper in the following standard form:
    For books: BALL, S (1990) Politics and Policy Making in Education (London, Routledge and Kegan Paul).
    For articles : JOHNSON, R. (1989) Thatcherism and English education: breaking the mould or confirming the pattern? History of Education , 18 (2), 3-34.
    Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.
    For chapters within books : RANSON, S. (1990) From 1944 to 1988: education, citizenship and democracy. In M. FLUDE and M. HAMMER (eds) The Education Reform Act 1988: Its Origins and Implications (Basingstoke, Falmer).
  • Tables and Figures, which should be avoided wherever possible, must be reproduced on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. Tables should be numbered by Roman numerals, and Figures by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript.
  • Proofs will be sent to the authors and should be corrected and returned to Vicki Lloyd within five days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
  • Offprints. A PDF offprint is supplied free on publication. Additional printed offprints may be purchased and should be ordered when the proofs are returned.

Pre-submission English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at:

All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

OnlineEarly BJES is covered by Blackwell Publishing's OnlineEarly service. OnlineEarly articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of OnlineEarly articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Exclusive Licence Form
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material.  (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright  in such cases does not need to  be assigned).  After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details).  To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office.
