About the journal

Aims & Scope

Mediterranean Politics is the only refereed academic journal to focus on the politics, international relations and political economy of the entire Mediterranean area ¨C ¡®Mediterranean' here being understood to refer to all those countries whose borders are defined partially or wholly by the Mediterranean Sea. This focus involves consideration not only of the region itself, but also the significance of developments there for other parts of the world.

The journal analyses the central issues that concern Mediterranean countries and assesses both local and international responses to them. While its prime concern is with political developments, the focus of Mediterranean Politics extends to all the factors and dimensions affecting political life. These include social movements and issues, regional and domestic conflicts, the political economy of the Mediterranean, migration, political reform processes and issues of cultural identity. The journal does not accept articles on historical subjects that lack direct contemporary linkage, or general economics articles with a Mediterranean context.

Since its inception, the journal has given extensive attention to the expanding relationships between Europe and its southern neighbours, including the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. Equally, we welcome contributions on other international initiatives concerned with the area, such as the southern dimension of the European Neighbourhood Policy, the US Greater Middle East project and NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue.

The articles are based on original research, some focused on individual states, others on relationships between them, the role of multilateral organizations in the area or issues that are relevant to the area or sub-areas as a whole or to several countries studied comparatively

Besides research articles, the journal publishes occasional essays (presenting an original perspective or analysis), a regular profile section devoted to briefer analysis of recent events or developments, reports on research meetings and a substantial book review section. Each volume includes a detailed annual chronology of events. While two issues per year are general ones, the other is a special guest-edited issue, recent themes having included:

¡®Shaping the Current Islamist Reformation'

¡®Euro-Mediterranean Relations after September 11'

¡®Conceptualizing Cultural and Social Dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean Area'

¡®Economic and Social Rights in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership'

¡®Transnational Islam and Regional Security'

To suggest a special theme, please fill in a Special Issue Proposal Form. Completed forms should be submitted electronically to the Editor, Richard Gillespie

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors

Mediterranean Politics is a refereed journal. Copyright in articles published in Mediterranean Politics rests with the publisher.

Articles submitted to Mediterranean Politics should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.

Articles submitted as hard copy should have all pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) numbered consecutively. There is no standard length for articles but 9,000?0,000 words (including notes and references) is a useful target. The article should begin with a summary of around 100 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate coversheet. Material submitted (preferably) in electronic form should be sent to Hakim Darbouche via email: hakim.darbouche@liverpool.ac.uk, accompanied by the submission form available at www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/FMEDsubmissionform.doc

Alternatively, submissions in hard copy may be sent to the Editor, Professor Richard Gillespie, School of Politics and Communication Studies, University of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 7ZT, UK.

Style
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The Editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. A guide to style and presentation is obtainable from the Editors, and it can also be viewed on the journal website at
www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/fmedstyle.pdf.

Notes and references
Both should be placed at the end of the article (notes first). Notes should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively through the article with a raised numeral corresponding to the list placed at the end. In this list numbers should not be raised and should be followed by a full point, not a bracket. Their purpose is not to indicate sources, but to elaborate on a point made in the text. At most they should include an abbreviated reference, with the full details provided in the list of references. References should be listed in alphabetical order and followed by the date of publication. The following are examples of our referencing style:

Xenakis, D.K. and D.N. Chryssochoou (2001) The Emerging Euro-Mediterranean System (Manchester: Manchester University Press).

Barb¨¦, E. (2000) Spain and CFSP: The emergence of a ‘major player'?, in: R. Gillespie & R. Youngs (Eds) Spain: The European and International Challenges (London and Portland, OR: Frank Cass).

Zoubir, Y.H. (1999) The Algerian crisis in world affairs, Journal of Modern African Studies, 4(3), pp.15?9.

Pace, M. (2001) Rethinking the Mediterranean: Reality and Re-presentation in the Creation of a ‘Region', PhD thesis, University of Portsmouth.

Every work quoted from or mentioned in the text must be included in the list of references. In the text itself, there should be a short reference appearing within parentheses, including page references where relevant. E.g. (Barb¨¦, 2000: 135?) or (Ludlow (ed.), 1994: 2?). Where there are two or more works by one author in the same year, mark them as 1996a, 1996b, etc.
