About the journal

Population, Space and Place aims to be the leading English-language research journal in the field of geographical population studies. It intends to:

Inform population researchers of the best theoretical and empirical research on topics related to population, space and place

Promote and further enhance the international standing of population research through the exchange of views on what constitutes best research practice

Facilitate debate on issues of policy relevance and encourage the widest possible discussion and dissemination of the applications of research on populations

Review and evaluate the significance of recent research findings and provide an international platform where researchers can discuss the future course of population research

Provide a forum for population researchers to assess and apply philosophical and methodological developments in the social and behavioural sciences

Encourage quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches to population research

The scope of the journal is international, covering developed and less developed countries and embracing all the main fields of interest in population studies, including:

* Population and society * Fertility, mortality and migration * Quantitative and qualitative methods of population analysis * Ageing populations * Census analysis * Spatial demography * Population policies * Theory and population* Population distribution and change * Population and development

The main content of each journal issue is research articles, but the journal also contains book reviews, and review articles commissioned by the editors which will report current debate or themes.

The editors welcome contributions from researchers in all fields of population studies who are interested in geographical issues.

Each volume will contain six issues. Papers will not normally be longer than 8,000 words. All research papers will be subject to peer review.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission The journal is intended for the publication of original contributions and review papers. Papers should not normally exceed 8000 words. Research reviews will usually be written at the invitation of the editors; authors wishing to submit a review should consult the editors prior to commencement. Population, Space and Place operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then click http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/popsp to navigate to the Population, Space and Place online submission site. IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is likely that you will have had an account created.

All papers must be submitted via the online system.

This journal operates a double blind reviewing process whereby the Reviewer is not aware of the Author's identity. In order to facilitate this please follow the instructions below very carefully.

Ensure your manuscript text does not contain any direct reference to you or your co-Authors.

Upload the main text of your manuscript with the file designation Main Document. The title page should contain just the title and keywords.

Upload a secondary title page as a separate document. Use the file designation Supplementary Material Not for Review. The secondary title page should contain the article title and full names and address of all authors.

File types. Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are .doc, .rtf, .ppt, .xls. LaTeX files may be submitted provided that an .eps or .pdf file is provided in addition to the source files. Figures may be provided in .tiff or .eps format.

Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as a .doc file type. If you try to upload a Word 2007 document in Manuscript Central you will be prompted to save .docx files as .doc files.

INITIAL SUBMISSION

NON-LATEX USERS: Upload your manuscript files. At this stage, further source files do not need to be uploaded.
LATEX USERS: For reviewing purposes you should upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box.

REVISION SUBMISSION

NON-LATEX USERS: Editable source files must be uploaded at this stage. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files.

LATEX USERS: When submitting your revision you must still upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your now revised source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box. In addition you must upload your TeX source files. For all your source files you must use the File Designation "Supplemental Material not for review". Previous versions of uploaded documents must be deleted. If your manuscript is accepted for publication we will use the files you upload to typeset your article within a totally digital workflow.

Copyright and Permissions

Authors must sign, scan and upload to the online system:

a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and

permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form .

The Copyright Transfer Form and the Permissions Form should be uploaded as “Supplementary files not for review?with the online submission of your article.

If you do not have access to a scanner, further instructions will be given to you after acceptance of the manuscript.

Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Manuscript style
The language of the journal is English. All submissions must have a margin of 3cm all round. Enter an abstract of up to 250 words for all articles. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work. Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes. English editing services .Wiley suggests that authors from non-English speaking countries have their manuscript reviewed and corrected by English Language Services before submission. We provide a list of recommended English Editing services at: http://www.wiley.co.jp/editservlist.html. Authors who want to have their paper checked and improved can contact any of these services before submission. Please note that this is an optional service, paid for by the author, and there is no guarantee of acceptance by the journal. For any questions please contact the Wiley Tokyo editorial office by fax (+81 3556 9763) or email at: editorial@wiley.co.jp

Reference style . References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al ., 1998)

All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Findlay AM. 1993. Population geography: disorder, death and future directions . Progress in Human Geography 17 : 73-83.

Reher DS. 2004. The demographic transition revisited as a global process. Population, Space and Place 10 : 19?1. DOI:10.1002/psp.313.

Parnwell M. 1993. Population Movements in the Third World . Routledge: London

Oucho JO, Gould WT. 1993. Internal migration, urbanization and population distribution. In Demographic Change in Sub-Saharan Africa , Foote KA, Hill KH, Martin LG (eds.); National Academy Press: Washington DC; 256-296.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate page. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing (maximum width 160mm).

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright and Permissions

Authors must sign and fax to Wiley:

a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and

permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form .

To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement , transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of the year on the Wiley InterScience website and through links in the online submission system. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editors or publisher.

Further Information . Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors. A manuscript may be returned to the authors without outside review if it fails to meet the minimum standards imposed by the journal; is deemed inappropriate for the journal and/or does not advance the field sufficiently to warrant publication. This decision will be made at the Editors' discretion.
