About the journal
Written Communication is an international multidisciplinary journal that publishes theory and research in writing from fields including anthropology, English, history, journalism, linguistics, psychology, and rhetoric. Among topics of interest are the nature of writing ability; the assessment of writing; the impact of technology on writing (and of writing on technology); social and political consequences of writing and writing instruction; nonacademic writing; literacy (including workplace and emergent literacy and the effects of classroom processes on literacy development); social construction of knowledge; cognition and composing; the structure of written text and written speaking, and listening. Also of interest are review essays and reviews of research on topics important to writing researchers. No worthy topic in writing is beyond the scope of the journal. Published articles will collectively represent a wide range of methodologies, but the methodology of each study must be handled expertly.
Written Communication has contributed to and continues to shape this emerging area of inquiry. This scholarly journal brings you new research, ideas and theoretical concepts.

Editorial Policy Statement WRITTEN COMMUNICATION is an international multidisciplinary journal that publishes theory and research in writing from fields including anthropology, English, history, journalism, linguistics, psychology, and rhetoric. Among topics of interest are the nature of writing ability; the assessment of writing; the impact of technology on writing (and the impact of writing on technology); the social and political consequences of writing and writing instruction; nonacademic writing; literacy (including workplace and emergent literacy and the effects of classroom processes on literacy development); the social construction of knowledge; cognition and composing; the structure of written text and written communication; relationships among gender, race, class and writing; and connections among writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Also of interest are review essays and reviews of research on topics important to writing researchers. No worthy topic related to writing is beyond the scope of the journal. Published articles will collectively represent a wide range of methodologies, but the methodology of each study must be handled expertly.
Guidelines for Submission: Submitting an essay indicates that the work reported has not been previously published, that the essay--in present or revised form--is not being considered for publication in other journals or in edited volumes, and that the author(s) will not allow the essay to be so considered before notification in writing of an editorial decision by Written Communication. Submission should generally not exceed 9,000 words and must follow the American Psychological Associations (5th edition) guidelines for publication. Domestic submissions: Send four copies to Editors, Written Communication, in care of Kent State University, Department of English, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242. Include unattached postage stamps to cover separate first-class mailings of the four copies of the manuscript. International submissions only: Mail one copy of the manuscript to the above addresses or arrange with the editor to transmit electronically. Each manuscript should be accompanied by an abstract of 100-150 words and a cover page which should include the title of the submission, author name(s), institutional affiliation(s), mailing address(es), home and office telephone number(s), fax number(s), email address(es), and three or four-sentence biographical statements. Author name(s) should not appear anywhere else in the manuscript. Note that the entire manuscript should be double-spaced, including the abstract, block quotations, tables, notes, and references. Written Communication does not normally return submitted manuscripts to authors. A copy of the final revised manuscript saved on diskette will be required of all accepted submissions.
