Supply Chain Management: An International Journal (SCM) is targeted at academics and practitioners in both public and private sector organisations working on all aspects of vertical co-ordination and process integration. The journal promotes the exchange of knowledge, experience and new ideas between researchers and practitioners and encourages a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional approach to the resolution of problems and the exploitation of opportunities within supply chains that extend beyond the buyer-supply interface. SCM provides a vital link between practitioners and academics pursuing excellence in supply chain management.

Editorial objectives
SCM:IJ is targeted at academics and practitioners in both public and private sector organisations working on all aspects of vertical co-ordination and process integration. The journal promotes the exchange of knowledge, experience and new ideas between researchers and practitioners and encourages a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional approach to the resolution of problems and the exploitation of opportunities within supply chains that extend beyond the buyer-supply interface.

Within SCM, supply chain management is viewed as a business philosophy that covers all aspects of business activity, the main emphasis being on vertical co-ordination to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Thus, the scope of this journal is wide ranging and includes all aspects of the buy, make, move, sell and return processes (e.g. strategic sourcing and supplier development, purchasing, manufacturing and operations management, logistics and inventory management, customer relationship management and order fulfillment, new product development and product design). Contributions are encouraged from diverse disciplines (e.g. economics, marketing, finance, operations management, logistics, organisational behaviour, retailing, process engineering, geography, management science, information technology and ethics) but SCM is particularly interested in publishing results from multi-disciplinary research and cross-functional projects that involve multiple stakeholders.

Editorial scope
Supply chain management is viewed as a business philosophy, which covers all aspects of business activity, the main emphasis being on working together with customers and suppliers to achieve competitive advantage. Thus, the scope of this journal is wide ranging and includes all aspects of the delivery process (procurement, manufacturing, logistics, inventory management, account management, marketing and new product development) and theoretical contributions from the social sciences (operations management, corporate strategy, organizational behaviour, new institutional economics, and public policy) in relation to developed and developing countries world-wide.

Review process
The editorial policy is inclusive and the introduction of Regional Editors in 2002 has led to shorter lead times. Research papers, research notes and case studies are now triple blind peer reviewed.

Papers will be considered under the following categories:

  • Research papers - based on empirical work and grounded in theory, triple-blind refereed (maximum 4,000 words);
  • Research notes - academic comments on topical issues, contributing to the theoretical debate but lacking empirical research results, accelerated triple-blind refereed by academics to facilitate publication of topical contributions at short notice (1,500-2,000 words);
  • Case studies - providing the contextual link between theory and practice, triple-blind refereed (maximum 4,000 words);
  • Insights from industry - illustrating the latest industry developments and/or best practice, reviewed by the Editor (1,500-2,000 words);
  • Doctoral papers - designed to catch the best in PhD researchers before their work becomes dated. Acclerated double-blind refereed (maximum 4,000 words);

With the exception of Insights from industry papers, and Doctoral papers, each paper submitted is subject to the following review procedure:

  1. It is reviewed for general suitability for publication
  2. If it is judged suitable, three reviewers are selected and a triple-blind review takes place
  3. Based on the recommendations of the reviewers, a decision is taken as to whether the article is accepted as is, returned for revisions, or rejected.
  4. The Editor will then decide upon the date of publication.

Emerald Literati Editing Service
The Literati Club can recommend the services of a number of freelance copy editors, all themselves experienced authors, to contributors who wish to improve the standard of English in their paper before submission. This is particularly useful for those whose first language is not English.
