About the journal
|
Studies in Higher Education welcomes empirically based, reflective and synoptic articles dealing with any aspect of higher education, approached from any perspective or discipline. A key criterion for publication is that articles should be written in an accessible, but rigorous, style that is likely to engage those without a specialist interest in the topic being discussed. As Studies in Higher Education is an international journal, it is also important that authors engage with relevant literature from other countries, and explain, where appropriate, the national context for their research.
Studies in Higher Education is published on behalf of the Society for Research into Higher Education.
Abstracting Information:
Studies in Higher Education is indexed and abstracted in Australian Education Index (AEI); National Database for Research into International Education (NDRI); Academic Search; British Education Index; Contents Pages in Education; Current Contents Social & Behavioral Sciences; EBSCO Online; EBSCO CD Rom Database; Educational Administration Abstracts; Educational Research Abstracts online (ERA); ERIC; Social Sciences Citation Index; International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) and UNESCO Database. |
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be sent to the Editor, Professor Malcolm Tight, Department of Educational Research, County South, Lancaster University, Lancaster LA1 4YD. Normally between 5000 and 7000 words, they should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. Each article should be accompanied by a summary of 100-150 words on a separate sheet. The full postal and email addresses of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Four complete copies (firmly stapled) of each manuscript should be submitted. A note should appear at the end of the last page indicating the total number of words in the paper (including those in the Abstract and References). Prospective authors are welcome to contact the Editor by email - m.tight@lancaster.ac.uk - if they are unsure if their article is appropriate for the journal. Electronic submission of articles is not acceptable, however, unless the author does not have access to a reliable postal service.
Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.
Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be drawn by the publisher.
References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following standard form:
For books: Norton, P. & Wiberg, K. (1998) Teaching with technology (Orlando, FL, Harcourt Brace).
For articles: Loughran, J. & Corrigan, D. (1995) Teaching portfolios: a strategy for developing learning and teaching in preservice education. Teaching and Teacher Education, 11(6), 565-577.

If you have any further questions about the style for this journal, please submit your questions using the Style Queries form.
Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of $5.00/$25.00 per copy.
Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in SRHE. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
