About the journal
The Southern Economic Journal
Abstracts of the Southern Economic Journal are available online.
The Southern Economic Journal is a publication of the Southern Economic Association. The Journal is published four times a year in January, April, July, and October.
All submitted manuscripts should contain original work and should not be under consideration for publication at another journal. Manuscripts should not exceed 50 pages.
A submission fee of $50.00 for SEA Members and $110.00 for non-Members must accompany all manuscripts, except book reviews.
The Southern Economic Journal features original, refereed scholarly articles in all areas of economics as well as contributions on the pedagogy of economics. The journal also contains occasional invited papers such as the Distinguished Guest Lecture, and the Presidential Address from the annual conference of the Southern Economic Association (SEA). In addition, the journal serves members of SEA and other readers interested in economics through the publication of book reviews, and announcements. The Southern Economic Journal has been published quarterly by the Southern Economic Association since its inception in 1933, and currently contains approximately 1,000 printed pages per year.

All submitted manuscripts should contain original work and should not be under consideration for publication at another journal. Manuscripts should not exceed 50 pages.
A submission fee of $50.00 for SEA Members and $110.00 for non-Members residing in the United States must accompany all manuscripts, except book reviews. The submission fee for Canadian submitters is $120 and for all other submitters, $125. There is no fee for resubmission.
Guidelines for Manuscript Submissions
The SEJ strongly encourages electronic (PDF) submissions of manuscripts. To submit electronically, use the link: http://editorialexpress.com/sej. Electronic submission allows authors to submit their manuscript online. The manuscript must be in PDF format.Instructions on how to convert documents into PDF format are at: http://gemini.econ.umd.edu/eeditor/pdftips.html.
Author(s)' identity should not be identified anywhere in the PDF document. The manuscript's cover page must show only the title, the abstract and the JEL codes. All acknowledgements must be removed. Contact author's information will be entered online in the form at the link indicated above. Resubmissions, however, must be accompanied by a letter detailing the changes made to the manuscript and the responses to the referees. For regular submissions please mail two copies of the manuscript to the above address and an electronic version of the manuscript in a diskette or compact disc. The electronic version should include a PDF file as well as a Word, Word Perfect, or LaTex file.
Format
The Southern Economic Journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, in copy editing manuscripts for publication. It is not necessary for authors to familiarize themselves with these details for initial submissions of manuscripts. We ask authors to follow the guidelines below for initial submissions.
All manuscripts should be typed on one side of 8 " x 11" paper and be double spaced. Margins should be one inch on all sides (A4 paper should have a 2-inch bottom margin).To assure anonymous review, authors should not identify themselves directly or indirectly in their papers. Authorship should be identified only on a removable cover page. A cover page should include the title of the paper, each authors' name, title, affiliation, mailing address, and any acknowledgments.
All pages, including tables, appendices, and references, should be serially numbered. Please use Times New Roman font in 12 pt. type.
Abstract
Please include an abstract of not more than 200 words (JEL abstracts, which must not exceed 100 words, will be required for final submissions). The abstract should include a readable summary of the research issues, methodology, and principal findings and contributions. The abstract page is the first page of the paper, and should include the title of the manuscript and JEL codes, but not the author(s)' name(s) or other identifying designations.
Tables and Figures
Each Table and Figure (graphic) should appear on a separate page and should be placed at the end of the text. Each should bear an Arabic number and be double-spaced.
A reference to each Table or Figure should be made in the text.
Tables and Figures should be reasonably interpreted without reference to the text.
Documentation
Use the "author-date" system keyed to a list of works in the reference list. In-text citations are in chronological, then alphabetical, order. List all authors up to three; use et al. for four or more authors. For example, (Jones 1987); with two authors, (Jones and Smith 1987); with four or more authors, (Jones et al. 1987); with two or more works by one author (Jones 1987, 1989); with more than one source cited together, (Jones 1987; Smith 1990).
Use "p." or "pp." to denote page numbers, for example (Jones 1987, p. 115).
When the reference list contains more than one work of an author published in the same year, the suffix a, b, etc. follows the date in the text citation. For example, (Jones 1987a).
Reference List
Arrange citations in alphabetical order according to surname of the first author or name of institution responsible for the citation. List authors for each citation, even when the previous citation has the same author(s).
In listing more than one name in references (Cheng, David C., Benton E. Gup, Jr., and Larry D. Wall) always use a comma before "and."
Dates of publications should be placed immediately after authors' names.
Multiple works by the same author should be listed in chronological order of publication. Two or more works by the same author in the same year are distinguished by letters after the date.
Footnotes or Endnotes
Footnotes should be used only for extensions and useful excursions of information that if included in the body of the text might disrupt its continuity. Footnotes should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript with superscript Arabic numerals. Once papers are accepted for publication, authors will have to convert footnotes to endnotes for the printer.
Empirical Results
Authors should provide an Appendix with a complete description of all data sources. The SEJ Editors expect authors of accepted papers to provide data documentation adequate for replication of their research findings by others. In the case of publicly available data sets (such as the NSLY), identification of variables used and any selection criteria for inclusion in the sample should usually be adequate. For other data sets, the Editors expect that authors can make available a computer diskette containing the data and programs used to extract the data to other researchers wishing to replicate the findings. In the case of papers using proprietary data that cannot be released to other researchers, the author should notify the Editors at the time of submission.
Please try to use short descriptions of variables rather than symbols, acronyms, or abbreviations in Tables reporting empirical results. Use asterisks to denote levels of statistical significance and superscript lower-case letters to denote footnotes in Tables.
Experimental Economics
Authors reporting experimental results should provide copies of the instructions and protocol with each copy of the submitted manuscript. The Editors expect that authors will provide the complete data set from the experiment to other researchers wishing to replicate the findings.
Membership Dues/Fees
Membership dues in the Association are: annual $60.00, life $550.00, student $20.00, retired $20.00. Membership fees include payment for a year's subscription to the Southern Economic Journal. Canadian members please include $10.00 extra. All other foreign members please include $15.00 extra.
The subscription price is $130.00 per year for non-Members, domestic, and $140.00, foreign. Single copies: Members -$20.00 domestic, $23.00 foreign; non-Members - $30.000 domestic, $33.00 foreign.
