About the journal
Since its inception in 1925, the South African Journal of Economics has established a reputation as one of the leading international regional journals, publishing economics research affecting African countries for a worldwide audience. The South African Journal of Economics publishes papers from internationally recognised authors on a wide range of subjects and accepts contributions on all the known fields of the discipline, including methodology and economic history and, in more recent times, econometrics. Its editorial organisation has recently been extended to allow for a more effective editing of papers on specialised topics. Topics covered recently include:
- Inflation Issues
- Regulatory Issues
- Health Issues
- Monetary & Fiscal Policy Issues
- South African Political Economy
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be submitted in final form by email and only in MS Word: (saje@up.ac.za) to the Editorial Secretary, and accompanied by a 100 word abstract. All papers should be professionally edited. A professional fee of R8 per 100 words will be charged if editing is left to the Managing Editor.
Page set-up: page size: 17.1 x 24.6 cm
Margins: top, 2 cm; bottom and sides, 1.8 cm; header and footer, 1cm, tabs, 0.4
Text: Garamond, 11 pt. single spacing
Title: centered and upper case. 14 pt. 1.5 spacing
Author: small caps 10 pt
Paragraph heading: centred, upper case, numerical, 10 pt.
Sub-heading: Italics, alphabetical, 11 pt
Tables: headings in italic, 11 pt. contents, Garamond 7
Tables, equations and diagrams should be kept to a minimum
Diagrams and Figures should be clear and professionally drawn in Excel and drawn into the manuscript. Caption in italics, 10 pt. Legend below, 7 pt.
References in Harvard
We experience difficulties in the printing process of the SAJE if the layout is not done in one font throughout the manuscript. We make use of Garamond. Please ensure that you use only this font in Equations; Graphs/Legends, Figures; headings of diagrams. Scanned text, Tables, Figures and Diagrams greatly reduce the quality and the font cannot be changed, causing problems, so please avoid this method.
Also avoid the use of colour images in diagrams and in figures as they also cause a loss of quality, use only black and white instead.

Exclusive Licence Form Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be published unless a signed form has been received by Blackwell. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here.
