About the journal

Sociological Research Online

Sociological Research Online has been published quarterly on the World Wide Web since March 1996. Articles published in the journal are peer-reviewed by a distinguished Editorial Board and qualify for inclusion in the UK Research Assessment Exercise.

Sociological Research Online was established under the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib). When funding ceased in September 1998, Sociological Research Online introduced institutional subscriptions in order to be able to continue publishing high quality sociology. The journal is still available without charge to individuals accessing it from non-institutional networks.

Over the last four years, the journal has established itself as a leading journal of sociology, being cited by the Institute for Scientific Information, a key performance indicator for journals, as well as the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences and other abstracting services. The journal services over 100,000 web requests per month from over 100 different countries. If you want your research to be widely read, then there is no better place to publish than in Sociological Research Online.

Rapid Response/Sociology Online

Over the years, Sociological Research Online has made electronic publishing a reality and has innovated new ways of publishing and communicating. The most recent innovation has been the introduction of rapid response publishing where sociologists have been invited to contribute to sociological debates about topics in the public arena. These have included collections on the themes of the Stephen Lawrence murder enquiry, war and genocide in relation to the Kosovo conflict, the genetic modification of food, the future of Sociology and Sociology and prediction. These are published alongside regular issues.

Thematic Collections

These innovative collections bring together articles, reviews and research resources published in earlier issues, gathered together around particular themes. The contents change and collections grow as new material is published. These collections have proved to be ideal for lecturers to include on reading lists and for students who are studying particular aspects of sociology.

Pinboard

Sociological Research Online has featured a 'pinboard' for over two years. Conference and seminar organisers regularly post notices of events. There is also an extensive web directory listing related sites and the journal hosts a number of discussion forums for communicating academic ideas and discussing professional issues.

Sociological Research Online is:

fully refereed and permanently archived

able to return editorial decisions on articles in between four and eight weeks from submission

fully recognised for the Research Assessment Exercise

able to publish all accepted articles in the next available issue with none of the page limitations of paper journals

indexed by the ISI, IBSS, Sociological Abstracts and other major abstracting and indexing services

managed by a consortium of the British Sociological Association, SAGE Publications and the Universities of Surrey and Stirling

accessed by over 2000 readers a week, worldwide

free to readers accessing via dial-up Internet access

Editorial Board

Sociological Research Online has an Editorial Board from which a third of the members retire each year. This means that we are always looking for academics willing to serve on the Board. If you would like to be considered for a term on the Editorial Board, then see the journal's Website http://www.socresonline.org.uk for information and contact us by email on socres@soc.surrey.ac.uk

Subscription Information for Librarians

Sociological Research Online remains free to individuals reading it from an Internet Service Provider account. Those reading through institutional networks will only gain access if the institution has paid for a subscription.

Subscriptions can be purchased through regular library subscription agents such as Swets, Blackwells or EBSCO or via http:/www.socresonline.org.uk/. Subscriptions may be for direct access to the journal's Website or via subscription agents' own electronic journal services. This means that Sociological Research Online can form a part of your regular electronic journal holdings.
