Welcome to Slavic Review

Slavic Review is an international interdisciplinary journal devoted to the study of eastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, past and present. The journal publishes articles of original and significant research and interpretation, reviews of scholarly books and films, and topical review essays and discussion forums. Submissions from all disciplines and perspectives are welcomed. A primary purpose of the journal is to encourage dialogue among different scholarly approaches. Published since 1941, Slavic Review is the membership journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS). Articles are peer-reviewed and editorial policy is guided by an international editorial board. Please see the "information" link for details on submitting manuscripts, book review policies, and other matters.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts for consideration should be printed on a letter-quality or near letter-quality printer and submitted by post or courier in four double-spaced copies, addressed to Diane P. Koenker, Editor, Slavic Review, 57 E. Armory Avenue, Champaign, IL 61820 USA. Notes and block quotations should also be double-spaced; notes should be placed at the end of the manuscript and not at the bottoms of pages. Library of Congress transliteration and the Chicago Manual of Style are to be followed. Manuscripts are sent to outside readers in anonymous form and should be prepared accordingly.

In general, articles should not exceed 8,000 words, excluding endnotes. Please indicate the word count on the cover page of the manuscript. Accepted manuscripts will be copyedited electronically, and authors will be asked to submit final versions on computer diskette. Submissions will not be returned.

The policy of Slavic Review is not to consider materials that have been published or that are being considered for publication elsewhere in any form or in any language.

Slavic Review does not accept unsolicited book reviews.

Slavic Review is the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, whose members support the journal through their dues. Slavic Review expects the authors of articles published in the journal to belong to the association.

Ordinarily, we are able to report back to authors about their submissions within four months. The editor regularly reports on acceptance rates, normal turnaround time, and other matters of editorial policy and production in NewsNet, the newsletter of the AAASS, most recently in the March 2004 issue.

BOOK REVIEWS

Slavic Review receives annually about twice as many books for review as can be accommodated in the journal. Selection of books for review is the result of a careful editorial process of evaluation and examination of the scholarly qualities of books received for review, with attention paid to geographical and disciplinary balance. Since not all of the books we receive can be reviewed, we generally favor research monographs that reflect high scholarly standards and coherent collections of essays, although we will review occasional works of synthesis and primary accounts of special scholarly value. The selection decision is a matter of editorial judgment, and must be considered final.

Books for review may be sent to: Editor, Slavic Review, 57 E. Armory, Champaign, IL 61820. Given the volume of books received, it is not possible to return materials submitted by publishers: books not selected for review are listed at the end of the book review section as "Books Received."

Slavic Review does not accept unsolicited book reviews. For commissioned reviews, guidelines are available here.
