About the journal

Sex Roles: A Journal of Research is an interdisciplinary, behavioral science journal with a feminist perspective. It publishes original research reports and theoretical and review articles that illuminate the underlying processes and consequences of gender role socialization, gendered perceptions and behaviors, and gender stereotypes. Topics include developmental, cognitive, social, and personality factors in gender role development, child rearing practices, and family organization; social influences (e.g., media, schools, peers, community); the acquisition, maintenance, and impact of stereotypes; effects of contemporary social change (sociocultural as well as economic, legal, and political systems); gendered physical and mental health concerns; gender issues in employment and work environments; interpersonal relationships; sexual preference and identity; victimization; and methodological issues in gender research. Authors whose papers address cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual preference, ability, and/or class diversity are encouraged to submit. The journal also publishes book reviews that address these topics.

Publication Policies
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance of your article you will receive a link to the special Author Query Application of Springer's website where you can sign the Copyright Transfer Statement online and indicate whether you wish to order OpenChoice, paper offprints, or printing of figures in color. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.

Manuscript Style
The 2001 (fifth) edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association should be used as the style guide for the preparation of manuscripts, particularly with respect to such matters as the use of nonsexist language, citation of references, and the use of abbreviations, numbers, and symbols.

Manuscripts should be checked for content and style (correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar; accuracy and consistency in the citation of figures, tables, and references); and stylistic uniformity of entries in the References section.

Type double-spaced using generous margins on all sides. The entire manuscript, including quotations, references, figure-caption list, and tables, should be double-spaced. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. Number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals, with the title page being page 1. In order to facilitate masked (previously termed "double-blind") review, leave all identifying information off the manuscript, including the title page and the electronic file name. Appropriate identifying information is attached automatically to the electronic file. Upon initial submission, the title page should include only the title of the article.

An additional title page should be uploaded as a separate submission item and should include the title of the article, author's name (no degrees), and author's affiliation. Academic affiliations of all authors should be included. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author's name. This title page should also include the complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the one author designated to review proofs.

The length of a regular report is 25 to 40 manuscript pages, not including references, tables, or figures.

An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 120 words.

A list of 4¨C5 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.

Illustration Style
Tables

Tables should be numbered in one consecutive series of Roman numerals and referred to by number in the text.

Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper and have a descriptive title.

Illustrations

Illustrations (photographs, figures, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals and referred to by number in the text.

Each illustration should have an accompanying caption. The captions for illustrations should be listed on a separate page.

Photographs should be digital form and electronic artwork submitted should be in the TIFF or JPEG format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half-tones and gray-scale art). Color art should be in the CMYK color space.

References
List references alphabetically at the end of the paper and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author's name is given in the text, followed by et al. References generally include (in this order): last names and initials of all authors, year published, title of article, name of publication, volume number, issue number, and inclusive pages.

The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the APA Publication Manual, illustrated by the following examples:

Journal Article
Rowe, M. P. (1987). The corporate ombudsman: An overview and analysis. Negotiation Journal, 3, 127−140.

Book
Stark, E. (2007). Coercive control: The entrapment of women in personal life. New York: Oxford University Press.

Contribution to a Book
Massaro, D. (1992). Broadening the domain of the fuzzy logical model of perception. In H. L. Pick Jr., P. van den Broek, & D. C. Knill (Eds.), Cognition: Conceptual and methodological issues (pp. 51-84). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.

Sex Roles does not use footnotes. All footnoted material must be integrated into the text.

Page Charges
The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.

Springer Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform, SpringerLink. After acceptance and upon commencement of typesetting, the contact author will receive an e-mail directing him/her to a webpage that provides Springer Open Access ordering information, including the current price schedule, and where Springer Open Choice can be ordered online. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription-model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
