About the journal
School Effectiveness and School Improvement presents information on educational effectiveness, practice and policy-making across primary, secondary and higher education. The Editors believe that the educational progress of all students, regardless of family background and economic status, is the key indicator of effectiveness and improvement in schools.
The journal strives to explore this idea with manuscripts that cover a range of subjects within the area of educational effectiveness at the classroom, school or system level, including, but not limited to:
- Effective pedagogy
- Classroom climate
- School ethos and leadership
- School improvement and reform programmes
- Systemwide policy and reform
The journal does not subscribe to any particular methodology, and publishes quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies, literature reviews, historical overviews, case studies, theoretical and philosophical material and methodological papers, providing they are relevant to the field of educational effectiveness and demonstrate the rigour expected from a leading education journal.

Notes for Contributors
Papers should be original. The editors prefer to receive manuscripts by email. If this is not possible, please send four copies of the complete text together with a floppy disk to either editor:
*Roel J. Bosker, c/o Conny Lenderink, University of Groningen, GION, Grote Rozenstraat 3, 9712 TG, Groningen, The Netherlands. Email: c.m.a.lenderink@rug.nl *Daniel Muijs, School of Education, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK. Email: Daniel.Muijs@manchester.ac.uk
It is anticipated that articles will be in the order of 5000 to 8000 words. Shorter articles between 2000 and 4000 words can also be published, where preliminary findings are being submitted or where importance of topic only justifies a short treatment. The latter articles will be carried in a section entitled ‘Shorter Articles and Notes'.
Manuscripts should be typed on one side of A4 paper with double spacing and a wide margin to the left. Four copies should be submitted, and a copy in Word format sent to the editors by email. In addition, a copy should be retained by the authors. All pages should be numbered. To allow anonymous refereeing, all submissions must be properly formatted for reviewing (see Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition, 2001, for instructions). Authors' names and institutions should be typed on a separate sheet and submitted with the manuscript. The full postal and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included.
Each paper should be accompanied on separate sheets by an abstract of 100 to 150 words.
Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.
Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
Citations of other work should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.
We strongly encourage you to send the final, revised version of your article, electronically, by email. More help and guidelines on submitting articles already accepted for publication. Please note that this information applies only to authors whose articles have been reviewed, revised, and accepted for publication.
Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Publisher within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
