The journal includes articles on the following topics: alcohol and alcoholism, drug use and abuse, eating disorders, smoking and nicotine addiction, and other excessive behaviors (e.g., gambling). Full-length research reports, literature reviews, brief reports, and comments are published. Every attempt will be made to review manuscripts rapidly and to keep publication lag at a minimum. The opinions and statements published are the responsibility of the authors, and such opinions and statements do not necessarily reflect the policies of the publisher or of Division 50 or the views of the Editor. All manuscripts should be clear, readable, and on paper of good quality. An unusual typeface is acceptable only if it is clear and legible. In addition to addresses and phone numbers, authors should supply electronic mail addresses and fax numbers, if available, for potential use by the editorial office and later by the production office. Authors should keep a copy of the manuscript to guard against loss. Masked review policy. Authors may request masked review. Authors requesting masked review should include with each copy of the manuscript a cover sheet, which shows the title of the manuscript, the authors' names and institutional affiliations, and the date the manuscript is submitted. The first page of the manuscript should omit the authors' names and affiliations but should include the title of the manuscript and the date it is submitted. Footnotes containing information pertaining to the authors' identity or affiliations should be on separate pages. It is the authors' responsibility to see that the manuscript itself contains no clues to the authors' identity. Manuscript preparation. Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Manuscripts may be copyedited for bias-free language (see chap. 2 of the Publication Manual). Formatting instructions (all copy must be double-spaced) and instructions on the preparation of tables, figures, references, metrics, and abstracts appear in the Manual. See APA's Checklist for Manuscript Submission. Abstract and keywords. All manuscripts must include an abstract containing a maximum of 180 words typed on a separate page. After the abstract, please supply up to five keywords or brief phrases. Figures. Graphics files are welcome if supplied as Tiff, EPS, or PowerPoint. High-quality printouts or glossies are needed for all figures. The minimum line weight for line art is 0.5 point for optimal printing. When possible, please place symbol legends below the figure image instead of to the side. Original color figures can be printed in color at the editor's and publisher's discretion provided the author agrees to pay $255 for one figure, $425 for two figures, $575 for three figures, $675 for four figures, and $55 for each additional figure. All titles and degrees should be omitted from authors' names. All manuscripts should include the following footnote typed on a separate sheet in APA format: Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to [give the author's full name and mailing address]. Psychology of Addictive Behaviors does not enforce firm page limitations on manuscripts. However, authors should be aware that the typical full-length manuscript accepted for publication is 25 pages; a brief report is 10 pages, excluding title page, abstract, author note, references, figures, and tables. References. References should follow the guidelines set forth in the Manual and should be cited in text as follows: "The results replicated those of a previous study (Knoth & Mair, 1991)," or "The procedure was a modification of Krettek and Price (1989) and Smith et al. (1977)." Multiple references should be cited in alphabetical order: "Earlier investigations (Abbott, 1988; Hunt & Aggleton, 1983; Winocur, 1985). . . ." Each listed reference should be cited in text, and each text citation should be listed alphabetically in the reference section. If any figure or table (or part or adaptation thereof) or more than a few lines of text from previously published material are included in a manuscript, the author must obtain written permission for republication from the copyright holder and forward a copy to the Editor. Authors are required to obtain and provide to the editor on final acceptance all necessary permissions to reproduce in print and electronic form any copyrighted work, including, for example, test instruments and test materials (or portions thereof) and photographs of people. Publications policy. Authors are prohibited from submitting the same manuscript for concurrent consideration by two or more publications. APA's policy regarding posting articles on the Internet may be found at Posting Articles on the Internet. In addition, it is a violation of APA Ethical Principles, to which this journal adheres, to publish "as original data, data that have been previously published" (Standard 8.13). As this journal is a primary journal that publishes original material only, publication of any manuscript that has already been published in whole or substantial part elsewhere is not appropriate. Authors have an obligation to consult journal editors concerning prior publication of any data upon which their article depends. In addition, APA Ethical Principles specify that "after research results are published, psychologists do not withhold the data on which their conclusions are based from other competent professionals who seek to verify the substantive claims through reanalysis and who intend to use such data only for that purpose, provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and unless legal rights concerning proprietary data preclude their release" (Standard 8.14). Authors submitting to Psychology of Addictive Behaviors are expected to adhere to these standards. Specifically, authors are expected to have available their data throughout the editorial review process and for at least 5 years after the date of publication. Authors will be required to state in writing that they have complied with APA ethical standards in the treatment of their sample, human or animal, or to describe the details of the treatment. APA requires authors to reveal any possible conflict of interest in the conduct and reporting of research (e.g., financial interests in a test or procedure, funding by pharmaceutical companies for drug research). Authors of accepted manuscripts will be required to transfer copyright to APA. Preparing files for production.
