About the journal

The Institute of Scientific Information Journal Citations Report for 2005 ranks Ocean Development and International Law in the categories of Law (social science) and International Relations (social science).

Ocean Development and International Law is devoted to all aspects of international and comparative law and policy concerning the management of ocean use and activities. It focuses on the international aspects of ocean regulation, ocean affairs, and all forms of ocean utilization. The journal publishes high quality works of scholarship in such related disciplines as international law of the sea, comparative domestic ocean law, political science, marine economics, geography, shipping, the marine sciences, and ocean engineering and other sea-oriented technologies. Discussions of policy alternatives and factors relevant to policy are emphasized, as are contributions of a theoretical and methodological nature.


Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted in hardcopy and on a diskette to the Editor-in-Chief, Ted L. McDorman, Faculty of Law, University of Victoria, P.O. Box 2400, Victoria, BC, Canada V8W 3H7. Books for review should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief also. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts prepared using MS Word and should be clearly labeled with the authors?names, file name, and software program. A hardcopy printout that exactly matches the disk must be supplied. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of no more that 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text. Authors must give from three to ten key words that identify the most important subjects covered by the paper.

Affiliation

On the title page, include full names of authors, academic, or other professional affiliations, and the complete mailing address of the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent.

References

Notes should be endnotes, not footnotes. Citations to sources and authorities should conform either to the current edition of A Uniform System of Citation (Bluebook) or to The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed. Examples of the latter notation style:

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1,200.00. Subsequent figures, totaling no more than 4 text pages, are $500.00 each. Good- quality color prints should be provided in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25 percent. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any figures deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.

Page Proofs

All proofs must be corrected and returned to the publisher within 48 hours of receipt. If the manuscript is not returned within the allotted time, the editor will proofread the article and it will be printed per his instruction. Only correction of typographical errors is permitted.

Offprints

An offprint order form will accompany proofs. It should be completed and returned with proofs. Corresponding authors will receive one complimentary copy of the issue.
