About the journal
The Northwestern University Law Review (Law Review) is a student-operated journal that publishes four issues of high-quality, general legal scholarship each year. Student editors make the editorial and organizational decisions and select articles submitted by professors, judges, and practitioners, as well as student pieces.
First published in 1906, the Law Review has been distinguished by the scholarly qualifications and variety of its participants. Prior Editors in Chief include: Roscoe Pound, long-time dean of Harvard Law School; Judge Robert A. Sprecher of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; Justice John Paul Stevens; Dean James A. Rahl; Governor Daniel Walker; and Newton N. Minow, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Other editorial officers have included Justice Arthur Goldberg and Adlai E. Stevenson.
The equally distinguished list of contributors to the Law Review includes Dean Leon Green, Sir William Holdsworth, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Albert M. Kales, Nathan William MacChesney, Charles T. McCormick, Sir Frederick Pollock, Dean Roscoe Pound, Dean John Henry Wigmore, Justice Felix Frankfurter, Justice Tom Clark, Justice William O. Douglas, Justice Abe Fortas, Chief Judge Harry T. Edwards, Erwin Griswold, Archibald Cox, Paul Freund, W. Willard Wirtz, Albert Ehrenzweig, H.L.A. Hart, Gerald Gunther, Edward H. Levi, Hubert H. Humphrey, Brunson MacChesney, Nathaniel Nathanson, Dean James A. Rahl, Dean (now professor) David Ruder, Martin Redish, Kenneth Culp Davis, Raoul Berger, Bernard Schwartz, Ian Macneil, John Coffee, Gary Lawson, Mary Becker, Stephen Schulhofer, Nadine Strossen, Judge Jos¨¦ A. Cabranes, Judge Richard Posner, Cass Sunstein, and many others. Beyond the Law Review's traditional legal scholarship, it has published contributions from noted philosopher F.S.C. Northrop, the Right Reverend James A. Pike, Earl Stanley Gardner, and J. Edgar Hoover.
In addition to individual contributions, the Law Review has a proud history of special symposium issues on a broad range of important topics. Recent symposium issues have included: Throwing Away the Key: Social and Legal Responses to Child Molesters (Summer 1997); Free Speech and Economic Power (Summer 1998); Empirical Legal Realism (Summer 2003); Constitutional Law and the Internet (Summer 2004); and our Centennial Symposium Issue (Fall 2005).

Instructions to Authors
Submissions
Thank you for your interest in publishing with Northwestern University Law Review. We are currently accepting submissions for our 101st volume. We will review submissions throughout the fall until we fill up the volume. We anticipate completing this process by the end of October.
General Information
Northwestern University Law Review publishes articles, essays (shorter submissions, typically less than 50 pages or 150 footnotes), and book reviews in four issues a year: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
We welcome unsolicited manuscripts from authors. Interested authors should submit articles between mid-February and early April for consideration in our Fall and Winter issues, and between early September and mid-October for consideration in our Spring and Summer issues. We cannot review submissions or expedite any reviews during the summer period (late April through August) or the winter period (November through January).
We strongly prefer that submissions be made through the online system ExpressO.
If you must submit a hard copy, please mail it to:
Executive Articles Editor Northwestern University Law Review Northwestern University School of Law 357 East Chicago Avenue Chicago, IL 60611-3069
We regret that manuscripts cannot be returned. Submissions are not accepted via e-mail.
Manuscripts should be double-spaced and use footnotes rather than endnotes. Text and citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th ed. 2005) and Texas Law Review Manual on Usage & Style (8th ed. 1995). Authors are also requested to provide a word count, including footnotes.
As a matter of policy, the Law Review encourages the use of gender-neutral language.
Submission Length
Effective April 15, 2005
The Northwestern University Law Review has no formal length requirements, and we will review all submissions, regardless of length. However, we support the recent statement (pdf) by the editors of several of our peer journals, and endorse the position that most Law Review articles can effectively convey their arguments within the range of 40-70 journal pages.
We believe that establishing page limit guidelines will enhance the quality of legal scholarship, and also shorten and improve the editing process. To that end, we strongly encourage authors submitting articles for our consideration to limit their pieces to 35,000 words, including footnotes. Authors submitting essays for our consideration are encouraged to limit their pieces to 20,000 words, including footnotes.
If you are considering a submission to the Northwestern University Law Review, and have questions or concerns about this new policy, please contact Executive Articles Editor Lizzy Whitehorn£¨e-whitehorn2007@law.northwestern.edu £©, or call (312) 503-8435.
Expedited Reviews
When requesting expedited review of a previously submitted article, please do so via ExpressO or by e-mail to Lizzy Whitehorn. Include "Request for Expedited Review" somewhere in the subject line of the e-mail.
If you have additional questions about the submission process, please e-mail Lizzy Whitehorn, executive articles editor, or call (312) 503-8435.
