About the journal

The Middle East Journal has been published quarterly since 1947 by the Middle East Institute—provides original and objective research and analysis, as well as source material, on the area from Morocco to Pakistan and including Central Asia. The Journal provides the background necessary for an understanding and appreciation of the region's political and economic development, cultural heritage, and ethnic and religious diversity.

Each issue of The Middle East Journal includes:

Articles written by renowned scholars, foreign policy analysts, and area experts. Each article offers unique insights invaluable to the scholar and lay reader alike.

A Chronology maintained continuously since 1947. Organized by subject and country, the chronology is a reference source without rival.

Book Reviews that are among the most respected, comprehensive, and up-to-date in the field of Middle Eastern studies. Full-length reviews, as well as annotations of recent publications, permit the serious reader to keep abreast of current literature on the area.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts

MEJ encourages the submission of manuscripts, in various disciplines, relating to the post-World War II Middle East, including Pakistan, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Submissions should be based on original research and analysis, and are subject to a peer review process that maintains the anonymity of authors and reviewers. Articles substantially shorter than 3,500 words or longer than 8,000 words will not be reviewed; research articles in the range of 7,000 to 8,000 words are generally preferred, though shorter articles of a policy nature will also be considered.

The Middle East Journal welcomes and prefers electronic submissions, either on IBM formatted diskette, or by E-mail attachment to editor@mideasti.org, in Microsoft Word or rich text format file. Those who are unable to submit electronically should submit their manuscript in hard copy, but they must be prepared to submit electronic copy if the article is accepted. If submitting hard copy the manuscript should be double-spaced, on single-sided numbered pages, with footnotes at the bottom of the page, consecutively numbered throughout the text. The article should be provided on standard US 8 ? by 11" white paper; overseas submitters using European paper sizes such as A4 should leave sufficient margins to permit photocopying onto 8 ? by 11" paper. Manuscripts must include a cover page containing the title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, and a 75 word abstract.

Manuscripts submitted for consideration by the Journal should not be submitted simultaneously to any other publication, nor should they have been previously published elsewhere, in English or any other language. A decision will be reached as quickly as the review process permits, but MEJ is not responsible for delays in the decision process. MEJ is not responsible for the return of manuscripts to authors. If accepted for publication, authors will be expected to supply the manuscript in Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect, or Rich Text Format, preferebly as an E-mail attachement. If submission is made on a diskette instead of E-mail, it must be in IBM format (not Macintosh). Upon publication, authors will receive 75 offprints of their article and one copy of the issue in which it appears.

Style

Text and reference note style should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style. Arabic transliteration follows the style of the International Journal of Middle East Studies, but without diacritical marks. Farsi transliteration should follow that used by Iranian scholars in the West, and Hebrew transliteration follows modern Israeli usage where possible. Authors who wish correct modern Turkish orthography to appear in their texts are responsible for providing it.
