About the journal
Learning and Instruction is an international, multi-disciplinary journal that provides a platform for the publication of the most advanced high-quality research in the areas of learning, development, instruction and teaching.

The journal welcomes several types of contributions: reports of original empirical investigations, and replications or extensions of important previous work; critical, integrative theoretical and methodological contributions. A preference, however, will be given to empirically-based studies.

The papers may represent a variety of theoretical perspectives and different methodological approaches (quantitative as well as qualitative). They may relate to any age level - from infants to adults - and to a diversity of settings, such as classroom learning in school, learning environments for special educational needs, vocational and industrial training of various kinds, and informal educational settings.

The focus will be on European work in the field. However, contributions from non-European experts as well as non-members of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction are encouraged.

The major criteria in the review and the selection process are the importance of the contribution to the area of learning and instruction, as well as its technical quality. The aim of Learning and Instruction is to provide a high quality, peer refereed journal publishing the most advanced research on learning and instruction.

Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscripts

As of December 12th, 2005, all manuscripts must be submitted through the Learning and Instruction online submission and review Web site (http://ees.elsevier.com/jli).

Authors are requested to submit the text, tables, and artwork in electronic form to this address. In an accompanying letter, authors should state that the manuscript, or parts of it, have not been and will not be submitted elsewhere for publication.

Submission items include a cover letter, the manuscript (including title page, abstract, manuscript text, references, and table/figure legends), tables, and figures. Revised manuscripts should also be accompanied by a unique file (separate from the covering letter) with responses to reviewers' comments. The preferred order of files is as follows: cover letter, response to reviews (revised manuscripts only), manuscript file(s), table(s), figure(s). Files should be labelled with appropriate and descriptive file names (e.g., SmithText.doc, Fig1.eps, Table3.doc). Upload text, tables and graphics as separate files. Do not import figures or tables into the text document. Complete instructions for electronic artwork submission can be found on the Author Gateway, accessible through the journal home page.

Authors who are unable to provide an electronic version or have other circumstances that prevent online submission must contact the Editorial Office prior to submission to discuss alternate options. Email Anastasia Efklides - efklides@psy.auth.gr The Publisher and Editor regret that they are not able to consider submissions that do not follow these procedures.

The Editor of Learning and Instruction is Professor Anastasia Efklides, School of Psychology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 541 24 Thessaloniki, Greece.

Manuscripts submitted for publication must be written in English.

Learning and Instruction publishes a limited number of special issues per year of about 100 published pages each. Proposals for special issues are sent directly to the Editor Professor Anastasia Efklides either by postal mail or e-mail. Proposals should include the name and address for communication of the guest editor(s), aim and scope of the special issue, list of 5 to 6 contributors and two commentators, the abstracts of the contributions, and a preliminary time schedule for the preparation of the special issue. Special issue proposals are subject to rigorous peer review.

Double blind review process is followed for all manuscripts. Manuscripts will not, in general, be considered for publication if they have been published before or if they are under review by another journal or publisher. Manuscripts accepted for publication can not be published elsewhere without consent of the Editor and the Publisher.

Manuscripts should conform to APA style (4th Edition and on).

Manuscripts acceptable to space requirements would be 15-25 A4 double space type-written pages or 4,500 to 7,500 words (including references, tables and figures), in font 12. An abstract not exceeding 100 words must be provided; this abstract will be printed at the beginning of the paper.

Illustrations

All illustrations should be uploaded in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams should all be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript when first submitted via the http://ees.elsevier.com/jli website, but should not be included within the text.

The position of all illustrations should be clearly indicated in the text.

If authors are unable to upload images they should contact the journal Editorial Office prior to submission to discuss alternate options.

Line drawings

All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.

Photographs

Original photographs must be uploaded as they are to be reproduced (e.g., black and white).

Captions

Ensure that each illustration has a caption. Supply captions within a separate uploaded file, not within the figure. A caption should comprise a brief title (not on the figure itself) and a description of the illustration.

Colour Illustrations

Submit colour illustrations as original uploaded photographs close to the size expected in publication. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article.

For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Please note: If the decision is made not to reproduce colour prints in the printed copy of the journal the images will be converted to 'grey scale' for inclusion. Because of technical complications which can arise when converting colour figures to 'grey scale' you may be asked to submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

Tables

Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (e.g., graphs).

The position of tables should be clearly indicated in the text.

References

References in the text should include the author(s)' name and year of publication. In case of more than one references, the names of the authors are given in alphabetical order.

The bibliography (References) should be given after the text, starting from a new page. References are cited in alphabetical order.

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements should appear on a separate sheet at the end of the text and before the bibliography (reference list).

Footnotes

Footnotes, in general, should be avoided. If needed, footnotes should be typed on separate sheet after the text (and acknowledgements) and before the bibliography (reference list). They should be numbered consecutively according to the order they appear in the text. In the text, footnotes are indicated by superscript numbers running consecutively.

Use of English language

The authors themselves are responsible for delivering their manuscript in good English (using English rather than American spelling). National colloquialisms, sexist language, and idiomatic use of language should be avoided.

Copyright

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.

If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights and Permissions Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com

Proofs

When the manuscript for your accepted article is received, it is considered to be in its final form. Proofs are not to be regarded as 'drafts'.

Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by email. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Author enquiries

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
