About the journal

The Journal of Social History was founded over 30 years ago, and has served as one of the leading outlets for work in this growing research field since its inception. The Journal publishes articles in social history from all areas and periods, and has played an important role in integrating work in Latin American, African, Asian and Russian history with sociohistorical analysis in Western Europe and the United States.

Brief Submission Guidelines

We prefer that authors preparing manuscripts for consideration style their articles according to the strictures in chapter two of A Manual of Style of Authors (University of Chicago Press). However, this is not a requirement in the submission stage, but will be if we choose to publish. In particular:

  1. Please send two hard copies of an original submission. We are willing to accept submissions electronically from authors outside of the U.S., but all others should send hard copy. The simple reason is that we cannot afford the number of print cartridges it would take to print out all of our submissions. We will retain one of your submitted copies. If you want the second copy returned, include with your submission postage for one manuscript.
  2. Except for quotations, manuscripts must be in English.
  3. Doublespaced endnotes must be grouped together on pages separate from the manuscript and must be complete references modeled after the samples in chapter 15 of the Manual of Style (see above).

Example of note style for book:

Timothy W. Guinnane, The Vanishing Irish: Households, Migration, and the Rural Economy in Ireland, 1850-1914 (Princeton, 1997).

Please note that this style does not note publisher name.

Example for note style of journal:

    C. Horace Hamilton, "The Annual Rate of Departure of Rural Youths from Their Parental Homes," Rural Sociology 1 (1936): 164-179.

  4. We do not have any length requirements, although our articles tend to be 20-30 pages. A submission will not be rejected on the basis of length. If we are interested in your submission we will ask for revisions in terms of length as well as content.
