About the journal
The American Review of Public Administration (ARPA) aspires to be the premier academic journal in the field of public affairs and public administration. As an assiduously peer-reviewed journal, ARPA features articles that address rapidly emerging issues in public affairs and public administration, and is open to both traditional and non-traditional approaches. As the official journal of the Research Section of the American Society of Public Administration, every issue of ARPA is seen by hundreds of academicians and practitioners.
ARPA is one of only 26 public administration journals worldwide to be included in the prestigious Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). A journal's inclusion in the SSCI and the Journal Citation Reports? published by Thomson Scientific, is a significant accomplishment indicating elite status in its field, as only the top 10-12% of all scholarly journals are included. With an impact factor of 0.513, The American Review of Public Administration is ranked 15 out of 26 journals in Public Administration in the 2004 Journal Citation Reports?
ARPA occasionally publishes Invited Essays by top scholars in the field. Recent examples include:
- Donald F. Kettl, "Contingent Coordination: Practical and Theoretical Puzzles for Homeland Security"
- Nancy Roberts, "Public Deliberation in an Age of Direct Citizen Participation"
- R.A.W. Rhodes, "Everyday Life in a Ministry: Public Administration as Anthropology"
ARPA eschews any methodological or disciplinary bias and is open to theory-based empirical research, conceptual/theoretical analyses, qualitative research, commentaries on pressing issues, research on the role of the nonprofit section in public service, international, comparative research, among other topics and approaches. All manuscripts submitted to ARPA are subjected to blind peer review, typically accomplished in less than 90 days. Time from final acceptance to publication is normally 9 to 12 months. Acceptance rate for manuscripts submitted over the last 6 years has averaged 17%.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be submitted to American Review of Public Administration, Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs, 101 Middlebush Hall, University of Missouri--Columbia, Columbia, MO 65211-6100; telephone (573)882-3812; fax (573)884-4872;e-mail arpa@missouri.edu. Six (6) copies are required. Submission of a manuscript implies a commitment by the author to publish in the journal, if the manuscript is accepted, and the editors assume that any manuscript submitted to ARPA is not currently under consideration by any other journal. Manuscripts between 20 and 30 pages are especially welcome. Manuscripts are subjected to blind peer review and require the author's name(s) and affiliation listed on a separate page. Any other identification, including any references in the manuscript, the notes, the title, and reference sections should be removed from the paper and listed on separate pages. Accepted submissions must conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 4th edition. Each submission should also include an abstract between 100-150 words and a brief biographical sketch of each author. An electronic copy of the final revised manuscript must be submitted, preferably on an IBM-compatible disk.
