2. Anonymisation Two versions of each submission must be provided, one of which must be fully anonymised. Anonymistion includes references to authors acknowledgements, title page and any electronic author identification. Papers must be provided in MS Word or rich text format. The final version of the accepted paper must be provided in MS Word format.
3. Text preamble Submissions must include a short but informative title on the first page. An abstract of maximum 150 words, indicating the paper's argument, approach and findings must be provided on the second page of the manuscript, along with five keywords.
4. Title page The title page of the non-anonymised version must include the full postal, email and telephone contact details of every author. The corresponding author must be clearly identified at the time of submission.
5. Tables and line diagrams should be provided at the end (not incorporated into the typescript); their position for eventual insertion should be keyed into the text.
Any acknowledgements should appear at the end of the text.
No more than three levels of subheading should be used. Indicate in the left-hand margin the level of heading required (A, B, C).
Underline words that are to appear in italic; circle in red words to appear in bold.
Spelling should follow that of the Oxford English Dictionary; authors are responsible for consistency in spelling and nomenclature.
Use Arabic numerals for all page numbers, tables, diagrams, etc.
Footnotes should not be used. If necessary, add 'Endnotes' in numerical sequence on the final page, referred to in text as (1), (2), etc.
6. References Use the Harvard system, which in the text cites authors and year of publication, and the full reference in a List of References at the end of the main text. For example:
Biggs, A. J., Hollis, J. and Parker, B. (1989) 'The European Monetary System', Journal of Political Studies 4 (5): 33-42.
Hudson, P. J. (1988) Capital Politics. London: Croom Helm.
Morgan, R. H. and Askew, S. (1989) 'International Economic Policy', in D. Pierson and H. Aitken (eds) World Politics. London: Macmillan.
In text these references should appear as follows:
Biggs et al. (1989); Hudson (1988); Morgan and Askew (1989)
Note: If two or more publications in the same year are cited for one author, add a, b, etc. after the date.
7. Tables These should be typed (double line-spaced) on separate sheets and contain only horizontal rules. Tables should be numbered consecutively throughout and include a short, descriptive title. Any relevant footnotes should be placed below and identified using *, daggers, etc.
8. Illustrations All line diagrams are termed 'Figures' and referred to as such in the typescript. They should be numbered consecutively.
Line diagrams should be presented in a form suitable for immediate reproduction (i.e. not requiring redrawing by the Publisher), each on a separate A4 sheet. They should be reproducible to a final printed width of either 63mm (single column) or 130mm (double column) and a maximum depth of 196 mm. Labels (i.e. letters within the boundary of the diagram) should use initial capital letters for the first word only (except for proper nouns). Figures will be reduced in size for a final height of 2 mm for capitals when printed.
All figure captions should be numbered corresponding to the order referred to in the text, and typed out in full. Provide captions as a separate list.
9. Non-sexist use of language The Journal is committed to a non-sexist use of language. Avoid, for example, the use of masculine pronouns (he, him, his), unless specifically referring to a male.
10. Copyright transfer forms will be forwarded to the author(s) following acceptance of the typescript for publication.
