About the journal
The American Journal of Political Science (AJPS) publishes research in all major areas of political science including American politics, public policy, international relations, comparative politics, political methodology, and political theory. Founded in 1956, the AJPS publishes articles that make outstanding contributions to scholarly knowledge about notable theoretical concerns, puzzles or controversies in any subfield of political science.
Instructions to Authors
The American Journal of Political Science (AJPS) seeks manuscripts that make outstanding contributions to scholarly knowledge about notable theoretical concerns, puzzles, or controversies in any subfield of political science. The AJPS will not review papers that are under consideration for publication elsewhere or whose contents have been substantially published before. Papers that do not meet the formatting and submission guidelines described below will not be sent out for review.
The AJPS does not process newly submitted manuscripts between August 1 and 31 or between December 20 and January 2. Generally, the AJPS follows the style guidelines of the American Political Science Association's Style Manual for Political Science and The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition) for issues not addressed in the former manual or these instructions.
Manuscript Formatting. The AJPS prefers manuscripts that are in the range of 25-35 pages long on standard 8.5 X 11 inch paper and formatted as explained below. We will not review manuscripts that exceed 45 pages. Manuscripts that are at or near the maximum length will be subjected to special editorial review regarding whether their length is justified.
An abstract of 150 words or less should be included on the title page of the manuscript. The manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively, including tables, graphs and appendices. All the text, footnotes, bibliographic citations, and appendix materials in a manuscript must be double-spaced and printed in a standard 12-point type font. Tables may be single-spaced. Tables and figures should be printed at the end of the manuscript, each one on a separate page. Papers that are accepted for publication must be prepared by the author in accordance with our requirements for headings, bibliographic citations, tables, figures, and related matters. Instructions regarding these requirements are available on our website under "Accepted Manuscript Guidelines."
Manuscript Submissions. All submissions must be made through the journal's website at www.ajps.org. E-mail or paper submissions will not be returned. Both original and revised manuscript submissions may include only one anonymous PDF file and only one author-identifying file, as explained below.
The (contact) author must submit the manuscript as a PDF file of the entirely anonymous version of the paper. Author-identifying information to be excluded from the anonymous PDF file includes the cover page information on authors, notes of appreciation to others for data or comments on the paper, statements of where the paper may have been presented at a conference, citations to the author(s) prior scholarship unless they are essential to the literature review of the paper, and any other language that could identify the author(s). The manuscript PDF file should be marked as "anonymous" in the "document summary" tab and the file should be printable. Authors submitting revised manuscripts must insert an anonymous revisions memo at the beginning of the anonymous paper PDF file. That is, the memo and the anonymous version of the manuscript must be in the same PDF file.
A second, author-identifying PDF file can be submitted in the "author's comments" field, with comments to the editors, acknowledgements and details on where the paper has been presented, but is not required. Authors who state that related text, data documentation, or additional analyses are available on request should include that material in this second PDF file.
In addition to the PDF file(s) described above, authors submitting manuscripts for review should have the names and email addresses of all authors and the text of the paper abstract available before accessing the manuscript submission link. Authors will also be asked to choose a research subfield for the paper. For manuscripts being resubmitted at the invitation of the editors, authors must have the manuscript number of the original paper.
NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article -- once it has been accepted -- through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
