About the journal

The International Migration Review is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal on sociodemographic, economic, historical, political and legislative aspects of human migration and refugee movements. Each issue of IMR presents original articles, research and documentation notes, reports on key legislative developments - both national and international, an extensive bibliography and abstracting service, the International Sociological Association's International Newsletter on Migration, plus a scholarly review of new books in the field. IMR also offers annual special issues. Planned by the Editorial Board in conjunction with guest editors, each of these issues provides an extensive and comprehensive analysis of a single topic of emerging relevance in migration studies. Through an interdisciplinary approach and from an international perspective, IMR provides the single most comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis and review of international population movements.

Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines

Editorial Procedure: In order to provide impartiality in the selection of manuscripts for publication, all papers deemed appropriate for IMR are sent out anonymously to readers. To protect anonymity, the author's name and affiliation should appear only on a separate cover page. IMR has the right to first publication of all submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts submitted to IMR cannot be submitted simultaneously to another publication. Submission of a manuscript to IMR is taken to indicate the author's commitment to publish in this Review. No paper known to be under jurisdiction by any other journal will be reviewed by IMR. Authors are not paid for accepted manuscripts. If manuscripts are accepted and published, all rights, including subsidiary rights, are owned by the Center for Migration Studies. The author retains the right to use his/her article without charge in any book of which he/she is the author or editor after it has appeared in the Review.

Preparation of Copy: IMR has moved to electronic processing of manuscripts, book reviews and related materials.  Submissions, correspondence, revisions, etc. should be made, whenever possible, by electronic exchanges over the Internet.  Electronic version of the manuscript (e.g., Word file) should be emailed to
imr@cmsny.org

1.  Type all copy - including indented matter, footnotes, and references - double-spaced.

2.  Save each table in a separate file. Insert a location note. e.g., "Table 2 about here," at the appropriate place in the text. Tables should not contain lines or more than 20 two-digit columns or the equivalent.

3.  Type footnotes (double-spaced) on separate sheets. Footnotes should include grant numbers or credits but not author's affiliation.

4.  Include an abstract of not more than 100 words summarizing the key findings of the paper.

5.  Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time that a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your documents as an older (.doc) file type.

6.  There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at
www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

7.  We can read files created in most standard word processing packages, however, if you have any questions, please call (212) 337-3080. Table prepared in word processors should be exported to (saved as) ASCII, comma-delimited files. Table can also be created in Excel. All disks should be either IBM-compatible of high-density Macintosh. Please indicate programs used on disk label.

8.  The mailing address for the Center for Migration Studies is:
27 Carmine Street, New York, NY 10017, U.S.A.

Format of Reference in Text:

All references to monographs, articles, and statistical sources are to be identified at an appropriate point in the text by last name of author, year of publication and pagination where appropriate, all within parentheses. Footnotes are to be used only for substantive observations. Specify subsequent citations of the same source in the same way as the first one; do not use ibid, op cit., or loc cit.

1. When author's name is in the text: Duncan (1969). When author's name is not in the text (Gouldner, 1963).

2. Pagination follows year of publication: (Lipset, 1964:61-64).

3. For more than three authors, use et al. For institutional authorship, supply minimum identification from the beginning of the complete citation: (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1963:117).

4. With more than one reference to an author in the same year, distinguish them by use of letters (a,b) attached to year of publication: (Levy, 1965a:311).

5. Enclose a series of references within a single pair of parentheses, separated by semicolons: (Johnson, 1942; Perry, 1947; Linguist, 1984).
References in Articles
We recommend the use of a tool such as
EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Forms of Reference in Appendix:

List all items alphabetically by author and, within author(s), by year of publication beginning with the most recent year, in an appendix titled "REFERENCES." For multiple author or editor listings (more than two), give authors. Use italics for titles of books and journals. For examples, see text of articles published in the Review.
