About the journal
Consistently ranked among the top 10 journals in Interdisciplinary Social Science in the Journals Citation Report?for the last 5 years!
Each dynamic issue of the American Journal of Evaluation (AJE) explores the complex and difficult challenges related to conducting evaluations. From choosing program theories to implementing an evaluation to presenting the final report to managing an evaluation's consequences, AJE offers original, peer-reviewed, often highly cited articles about the methods, theory, and practice of evaluation.
Because the field of evaluation is diverse, with different intellectual traditions, approaches to practice, and domains of application, AJE features broad, multidisciplinary perspectives relevant to education, public administration, behavioral sciences, human services, health research, sociology, economics, and criminology.
Some of the critical subjects covered in recent and forthcoming issues include:Approaches to Collaborative Evaluation ;Cluster, Multi-Site, and Multi-Level Evaluations ;Evaluating Comprehensive Community Initiatives ;Evaluation Capacity Development ;Evaluation Ethics ;Health Evaluation and Education ;Implementation/Process Evaluation ;International Development ;Measurement Validation and Reliability ;Narrative Evaluation Methods ;Non-Profit and Foundation Evaluation ;Performance Reporting ;Quality Improvement ;Statistical Methods for Estimating Change ;Theory-based Evaluation
Instructions to Authors
The American Journal of Evaluation (AJE) publishes original papers about the methods, theory, practice, and findings of evaluation. The general goal of AJE is to present the best work in and about evaluation to improve the knowledge base and practice of its readers. Because the field of evaluation is diverse, with different intellectual traditions, approaches to practice, and domains of application, the papers published in AJE will reflect this diversity. Nevertheless, preference is given to papers that are likely to be of interest to a wide range of evaluators and that are written to be accessible to most readers.
Individuals interested in contributing to the Ethical Challenges, Exemplars, Teaching Evaluation, and Book Reviews sections should contact the relevant section editor (see Contribution Categories published in the journal). All other manuscripts should be addressed to: Dr. Robin Lin Miller, Editor, AJE, Michigan State University, Department of Psychology, 316 Psychology Building, East Lansing, MI 48824. Submission letters should specify that the manuscript is not currently under consideration elsewhere and has not been published elsewhere in the same or a substantially similar form.
A total of six double-spaced typewritten copies should be submitted. On two copies, each author’s name, title, full mailing address, telephone number(s), and e-mail address should be listed. Author information should be omitted on four copies (for blind review). Please also submit a copy of the manuscript in electronic form, preferably in Word.
Manuscripts should in general be prepared following the style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). References, citations in text, tables, and figures should all conform to the APA style. Any figures should be camera-ready. Please see a recent issue of the journal for the format for headings and for references to papers or volumes from the New Directions for Evaluation series. If prospective contributors have questions or are uncertain about the appropriateness of possible submissions, they are welcome to contact the relevant section editor (see Contribution Categories) or Robin Miller via e-mail at AJE@eval.org or by phone at (517) 432-5640.
