About the journal

The rapidly increasing world population of aged people has led to a growing need to focus attention on the problems of mental disorder in late life. The aim of the Journal is to communicate the results of original research in the causes, treatment and care of all forms of mental disorder which affect the elderly. The Journal is of interest to psychiatrists, psychologists, social scientists, nurses and others engaged in therapeutic professions, together with general neurobiological researchers.

The Journal provides an international perspective on the important issue of geriatric psychiatry, and contributions are published from countries throughout the world. Topics covered include epidemiology of mental disorders in old age, clinical aetiological research, post-mortem pathological and neurochemical studies, treatment trials and evaluation of geriatric psychiatry services.

Instructions to Authors

Initial Manuscript Submission. Authors in North and South America and Japan should submit three copies of the manuscript, as well as an electronic copy (including copies of tables and illustrations) to George S. Alexopoulos, Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, 21 Bloomingdale Road, White Plains, NY 10605, USA. All other manuscripts should be submitted to Professor Alistair Burns, School of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, Room 18, 2nd Floor, Wythenshawe Hospital, Southmoor Road, Wythenshawe, Manchester M23 9LT. UK.

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Electronic Submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English (American English is also acceptable). All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text. Original and Review articles ideally should not exceed 2,000 words with no more than 6 tables or illustrations.

  • The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply an abstract of up to 250 words for all articles except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include between 3 and 10 keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
  • All abbreviations should be preceded the first time they appear by the full name except the SI symbols for units which are to be used without explanation. Mathematical symbols may be either hand or typewritten. Greek letters and unusual symbols should be identified separately in the margin. Distinction should be made between capital and lower case letters; between the letter O and zero, between I and the number one and prime, between k and kappa.
  • Generic or chemical names should be used for all compounds: identify materials and products. State the species of any animals used precisely. Indicate the sources of unusual materials and chemicals, and the model and manufacturer of equipment. Identify materials and products by their generic term followed by the trade name in brackets.

Reference Style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. The International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry uses Index Medicus Style abbreviations for journals cited. For correct abbreviations visit http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Journals: Chou K-L, Chi I. 2004. Combined effect of vision and hearing impairment on depression in elderly Chinese Int J Geriatr Psych 19: 825-832. DOI: 10.1002/gps.1174

Books: Porteus SD. 1959. The Maze Tests and Clinical Psychology. Pacific Books: Palo Alto.

Chapters in Books: Rabbitt PMA. 1982. How do old people know what to do next? In Aging and Cognitive Processes, Craik FIM, Trehub S (eds). Plenum Press: New York; 79-98.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure the top of the figure is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Artwork must be sized to the text width of 75mm/single and 155mm/double column.

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
