About the journal

Examining How the Social Sciences Fit Into Our World

The American Journal of Economics and Sociology (AJES) was founded in 1941, with support from the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation, to provide a forum for continuing discussion of issues raised and emphasized by the American political economist, social philosopher, and activist, Henry George (1839-1897). AJES has a long and distinguished history of publishing papers in the history of economic and social thought. Today, the exciting and unrelenting encounters between sociology and economics are a natural subject to explore, and AJES continues to publish carefully crafted essays in the social sciences that represent interesting analysis with an eye toward assisting both practitioners and academicians to better understand the world in which we live.

Each year AJES issues a special supplementary issue to all subscribers containing an important and interesting monograph in an ongoing series entitled Studies in Social Reform and Economic Justice. In addition, each year one issue is entirely devoted to an important thematic topic and scholars are invited to contribute from all around the world. The special thematic issue for 2005 is Celebrating Irving Fisher: The Legacy of a Great Economist, edited by Robert W. Dimand and John Geanakoplos.

Instructions to Authors

Authors should send four complete copies of their paper, with any artwork or illustrations, to:

Professor Laurence S. Moss
Economics Department
Babson College
Mustard Hall
Babson Park, MA 02457
USA

Submissions should be typed in English, double-spaced, with all notes at the end of the paper. A reference list with the full "facts of publication" must be included as well. Authors should consult a recent copy of the AJES for examples of satisfactory reference pages.

Each article (or short comment) that is published in the AJES has a title and a subtitle. The author(s) name(s) follows with an asterisk. The asterisk is repeated at the bottom of the cover page and a brief biographical paragraph follows containing each author's full name and professional address. The e-mail address is also supplied. After that a sentence explaining that "Professor XYZ interests include . . . . and recent he(she) has published a book . . . . ."

We require a 100-200 word abstract which should be included on the cover page.

By way of summary:

1. The first page has a title and subtitle, followed by the authors' names and an asterisk. Next comes an Abstract followed by a short biographical paragraph.

2. The substance of the paper begins on the second page. Authors are encouraged to break the argument by using subheads and number each subhead consecutively with Roman numbers.

3. Endnotes and a reference page are requested at the end of the paper.

4. Tables and Figures should be noted in the text of the paper by "Insert Table A" but included at the end.

The AJES prefers articles of about 6,000 words not including notes and references. We prefer to publish articles that describe a social phenomena and then go on to give an account of the mechanism(s) at work in producing that phenomena. Articles that deal with the history and development of social scientific thought are warmly encouraged. The fields in the social sciences that are most welcomed include; economics, sociology, anthropology, political science and law. Papers that offer an interdisciplinary perspective are warmly encouraged. For policy-oriented papers it is appropriate and encouraged to discuss the public policy implications (if any) of his (her) findings.

The AJES also has a "Comment and Analysis" feature that allows scholars to "sound off" about events so long as the ideas are presented in a logical and coherent framework, references are provided, and the whole project amounts to an interesting essay in persuasion presented in a mature professional way.

Legal considerations: Submission of an article to the AJES--as indicated by the use of these words or their equivalent in the cover letter-- implies that the paper is original, unpublished and that is not under consideration elsewhere by any other publication source. By submitting a manuscript the author(s) warrant that they have secured all needed copyrights and now transfer those copyrights to the AJES, Inc., including their own copyright in the original material. The AJES, Inc., will not unreasonably withhold its permission for any author(s) to make copies of the article for his own personal use or the use of his(her) students so long as timely notice is given to the AJES in writing at its editorial office. In the case of multiple authors, the author signing the cover letter is presumed to be the contact person for the team. It is the policy of the AJES to inform the lead author only of all official business surrounding the article.

Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to the American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Inc. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned.  (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement).  To assist authors an appropriate copyright assignment form will be supplied by the editorial office

Submission Fee: There is no submission fee. It has been our custom to invite authors to become subscribers and participate in the future development of the journal.

In addition to his full teaching duties at Babson, Moss teaches a specialty course in the history of economic analysis each Fall semester at the Harvard University Extension program. Moss has a special commitment to cross-disciplinary teaching and research. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University. In addition, he holds a J.D. from Suffolk University and now serves as a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar Association since 1986. Moss has practical experience in the law having conducted several trials and now serves as a partner in Ho & Moss Attorneys in Boston, Massachusetts. Moss' main commitment is to teaching and research. He serves on the editorial board of the following journals: History of Political Economy, Journal of the History of Economic Thought, and Small Business Economics. In the past he has served either as editor or as part of the editorial board of both the Eastern Economic Journal and the series of books helping to re-establish interest in the modern Austrian School entitled "Studies in Economic Theory" and published by Sheed, Andrews, and McMeel of Kansas City during the 1970s.

Recent publications include: "Friedrich A. Hayek: Super-Dissenter" in R.P.F. Holt and S. Pressman, ed. At the AJES Moss has initiated the special invited issues that appear each October and selects a variety of interesting and interdisciplinary contributions around a single well defined theme. The October 1997 invited issue on the theme "Henry George: A Commemorative Volume on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary of His Death" is now a collector's item. The October 1998 invited issue on the theme "Money, Trust, Speculation, and Social Justice" brought original contributions together from a variety of economists and sociologists. The October 1999 issue on "Economics and Sociology: The New Joint Venture" although in its early stages of production also hopes to break new ground.
