In only four years, The American Journal of Bioethics–published on paper and at bioethics.net–has become the most widely-read bioethics journal. Every issue of AJOB contains peer-reviewed Target Articles that zero in on tough questions, answered by Open Commentary articles from scholars across disciplines and cultures. The American Journal of Bioethics provides an authoritative, annotated conversation that is always among the key, most cited resources on the topic.
AJOB leads the way in bioethics publishing. Hundreds of thousands more readers have discovered bioethics through InFocus articles and other features of bioethics.net. Our readers include faculty and students at virtually every graduate and professional school in the world, thousands of elected officials and judges, and most health news journalists. The American Journal of Bioethics has followed through on the innovative vision that built bioethics: serious discussion of the social implications of biomedicine.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscripts. Manuscripts may not exceed 7500 words in length, should be in Microsoft Word or .rtf format, and should be submitted electronically via the AJOB Editorial site: http://editorial.bioethics.net. Further instructions on manuscript submission are available on the Editorial site. No paper copy is required. Questions should be directed to Kathleen H. Courtney, Executive Managing Editor, manuscript@bioethics.net.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper.
The title page should include the name, address, and professional affiliation of all authors. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces.
Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 150 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.
Six keywords should also be included for indexing purposes.
References. Cite references in the text by author and date (Smith 1983). A corresponding list of works cited should also appear at the end of the article. Please abbreviate the first name and spell out the last name for authors. Use headline capitalization for titles of journals and sentence capitalization for titles of books, journal articles, and chapters. Please do not abbreviate the names of journals. Some examples of common citation formats, as well as more specific guidelines, are provided online at http://editorial.bioethics.net.
Notes and Quotations. Avoid extracts, tables, and paragraphs in notes. Quotations of more than two lines should be set off in a separate paragraph with double indentation. Quotations of less than two lines may remain in the main body of the text, placed within double quotation marks. All extract citations must include page numbers.
Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
300 dpi or higher Sized to fit on journal page EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
Tables and Figures
Tables and Figures. Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.
Conflict of Interest. The full Conflict of Interest policy for The American Journal of Bioethics can be found online at http://bioethics.net. Briefly, authors must disclose any financial or other material, professional, or scholarly relationships that involve the area under discussion in their essay. A statement of such conflicts should appear on the first page of the manuscript. All disclosed conflicts of interest in articles submitted to AJOB will be reviewed by a conflict of interest committee comprised of members of the editorial board, but not the editors. This committee will make recommendations as to disclosure to peer reviewers, and the nature of disclosure required should the article be accepted. All appropriate disclosures will be printed alongside each article in the paper and online AJOB.
Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis?EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Offprints/Reprints. The corresponding author of each article will receive one complete copy of the issue in which the article appears. Offprints of an individual article may be ordered from Taylor & Francis. Use the offprint order form included with page proofs. Up to 10 additional issue copies may also be ordered. If offprints are not ordered by the required date, reprint pricing goes into effect, and issue copies may not be ordered.
