About the journal

 Cover

High Ability Studies provides a forum for scholars in a variety of disciplines associated with the development of human abilities to their highest level. It is a medium for the promotion of high ability, whether through the communication of scientific research, theory, or the exchange of practical experience and ideas.

The contents of this journal are unique in reflecting concerns and recent developments in this area from childhood and across the whole life span in a variety of contexts. Far from being restricted to the traditional focus on high-level cognitive development, it also presents investigations into all other areas of human endeavour, including sport, technology, the arts, business, management and social relations.

The journal is concerned with aspects of development, personality, cognition, social behaviour and cross-cultural issues in relation to high ability. Theoretical modelling and measurement techniques, as well as instructional strategies and curriculum issues, are of interest. Consequently, the journal presents material which is relevant to researchers in the field, to managers who have highly able individuals employed, to policy makers who need to find frameworks by which to make the best use of high ability in society, to mentors, coaches, teachers, counsellors and parents of highly able children. Furthermore, the contents are not restricted to the study of manifest high level achievement, but include the identification and nurturance of unexercised potential.

High Ability Studies is an international refereed journal which publishes papers in English, as well as reviews of books and other relevant material. It is the official scholarly journal of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA).

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts submitted to High Ability Studies should contain original research, theory or accounts of practice, which may not have been previously published nor be simultaneously under consideration for publication elsewhere. However, conference papers included as part of conference proceedings may be considered for submission, if such papers are revised in accordance with the format accepted by this journal, updated if need be, and full acknowledgement given in regard to the conference or convention in which the paper was originally presented.

All submitted papers are assessed by a blind refereeing process and will be reviewed by at least two independent referees. Therefore, avoid clues in the text which might identify you as the author. Authors will receive constructive feedback on the outcome of this process. Please note that the process will take two to three months in duration. High Ability Studies is published twice annually.

Text
Manuscripts should be written in accordance with the publication manual of the American Psychological Association (4th Edition). For example, the following should be adhered to:

Title page
Include title of paper, name(s) of author(s), affiliation, mailing address (include postal codes, if applicable also e-mail address and fax-number) and a running headline. The title page will be removed by the Editor prior to the refereeing process to allow for a masked review.

Abstract
Should consist of a maximum 120 words on a separate sheet. The abstract must, if the result of empirical research, briefly outline theoretical basis, research question/s (in one sentence if possible), methodology and instrumentation, sample/s and pertinent characteristics (e.g. number, type, gender and age) as well as the main findings of the study (if applicable include statistical significance levels). Also, include conclusion and the implications or applications.

An abstract for a review or a theoretical article should describe in no more than 100 words the topic (in one sentence), the purpose, thesis or organising structure and the scope of the article. It should outline the sources used (e.g. personal observation and/or published literature) and the conclusions.

Length
A paper submitted should not exceed 5000 words including abstract, references and illustrations.

Language
HAS is an international scholarly journal and papers must be written in English. It is recommended that non-native English speakers have their papers checked in regard to language accuracy prior to submission. British spelling, as well as American spelling is accepted.

Manuscript
Papers must be word processed, and printed or photocopied with a clear print, double-spaced and with margins of at least 4 cm (approximately 1.5 inches) on all four sides. Use one side of the page only. Carbon copies are not accepted. A4-format is recommended, but if not available in the country in which the paper originates, other and their appropriate paper sizes will be accepted. Pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page.

Statistics
Are an aid to interpretation and not an end in themselves. If reporting statistics, include sufficient information to help the reader corroborate the analyses conducted (cf APA-manual).

Qualitative data
If submitting a qualitative study, be sure to include a discussion on the stringency observed whilst obtaining and analysing the data (e.g. biases, analysis model, transcription keys, validation of results and so on). Include sufficient data to help the reader, as far as possible, to corroborate the analyses conducted.

Footnotes
Should be kept to a minimum or preferably avoided completely. If used, they should be numbered consecutively with superscript Arabic numerals.

Abbreviations
Must be kept to a minimum and not followed by a full stop, for example cm (not cm.), kg (not kg.)

Referencesshould be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. (e.g. Smith, 1998). If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. References should be listed in full, including pages, at the end of the paper in the following standard form:

Weisberg, R. W. (1993). Creativity: beyond the myth of genius. (New York, W. H. Freeman & Company).

For journal articles
Van Rossum, J. H. A. and Van der Loo, H. (1997) Gifted athletes and complexity of family structure: a condition for talent development? High Ability Studies, 8(1), 19-30.

Illustrations

Authors should follow APA-format in designing tables and figures and consider the fact that illustrations supplements - not duplicates - the text. In the text, refer to every table and figure and tell the reader what to look for. Discuss only the table's highlights.

Figures
Must be computer drawn or photographed and submitted on separate pages in the manuscript; not included in the text. Note that they must also be submitted as separate computer files on disk (jpg, jpeg or gif format). Figures should be identified with Arabic numbers and an explaining text, and their approximate place in the text should be clearly indicated in the manuscript.

Tables
Should be placed on separate pages; not included in the text. Note that tables also should be submitted as separate file/s. Tables must have an Arabic number, an explaining text and a title. Their approximate place in the text should be clearly indicated in the manuscript. Observe also that templates for tables provided with most word processing software may not be used unless templates follow APA-format. Spreadsheets, while inevitable when constructing diagrams with software such as for example Microsoft Excel of SPSS, should not be used as basis for table construction in the paper.

If you have any further questions about the style for this journal, please submit your questions using the Style Queries form.

Proofs

One proof will be sent to the author(s) to be corrected and returned—within three days of receipt—to the Editor-in-Chief. The cost of corrections in the first proof resulting from extensive alterations in the text will be charged to the author.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

Copyright

It is a condition of the journal that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in the European Council for High Ability. This enables ECHA and the Publisher to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors, may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication, providing that prior permission is obtained from the Publisher. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources.

Delivery

For your submission, please send manuscript/s, in triplicate, which will not be returned, to the Editor-in-Chief:

Professor Dr Albert Ziegler, Editor in Chief, Centre of Educational Sciences, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Ulm, Robert-Koche-Strasse 2, D-89069, Germany.

Please observe that if a manuscript is accepted as is, or accepted with a recommendation of some revision, you must then submit the manuscript on disk (IBM compatible, and clearly marked with name and title of manuscript. Also, signify type and version of word processor used, or alternatively submit the revised manuscript by e-mail using RTF-format). Submission via e-mail for revised and final manuscripts is the preferred means of submission.

Note that you must submit also, on a separate sheet of paper together with your manuscript, 8-10 lines of biographical information about each author for 'Notes on Authors' to be published with the article. Contact address/es should be included.
