Agriculture and Human Values is the official journal of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society.
Since World War II, agricultural production systems and food consumption patterns have undergone astonishing changes. Agricultural research, combined with high imput, capital intensive, and trade-based applications, has expanded the productive capacity of the world's farms tremendously.
However, serious questions have been raised about the sustainability of industrial agricultural and food systems, about the criteria for judging risks and benefits of chemical and biological technologies, about food safety, about the poor's entitlement to food in developed and developing countries, and about who will farm in the future and how. The Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society is an organization of professionals dedicated to an open and free discussion of these and other related issues, and to an understanding of the values that shape and the structures that underlie alternative visions of current and future food and agricultural systems. Agriculture and Human Values is the official journal of the Society. Like the Society, it seeks to create educational and scholarly affiliations among the humanities, the social sciences, food and nutrition studies, and the agricultural disciplines, and to promote an ethical , social and ecological understanding of agricultural and food systems.
The journal publishes papers that critically question the values that underlie and the relationships that characterize both conventional and alternative approaches to the agrifood system - from production processing, distribution, access, and use to waste mangement. Of particular interest are papers that explore the differential impact of ag- and food related institutions, policies, and practices on human popluations and the environment. The journal also publishes book review and field reports on related topics.

Online Manuscript Submission
Springer now offers authors, editors and reviewers of Agriculture and Human Values the option of using our fully web-enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible (no postal delays!), we encourage authors to submit manuscripts online to the journal‘s editorial office. Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time. Manuscripts should be submitted  to: http://ahum.edmgr.com The online manuscript submission and review system for Agriculture and Human Values offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTex; for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also in printout + disk. Electronic figuresElectronic versions of your figures must be supplied. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica.Colour figuresSpringer offers two options for reproducing colour illustrations in your article. Please let us know what you prefer: 1) Free online colour. The colour figure will only appear in colour on www.springer.com and not in the printed version of the journal. 2) Online and printed colour. The colour figures will appear in colour on our website and in the printed version of the journal. Reviewing procedure
Agriculture and Human Values follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested to place their name and affiliation on a separate page. Self-identifying citations and references in the article text should either be avoided or left blank when manuscripts are first submitted. Authors are responsible for reinserting self-identifying citations and references when manuscripts are prepared for final submission.
Manuscript presentation
The journal‘s language is English. American English spelling and terminology should be used consistently throughout the article. Manuscripts should be printed or typewritten on A4 or US Letter bond paper, one side only, leaving adequate margins on all sides to allow reviewers?remarks. Please double-space all material, including notes and references. Quotations of more than 40 words should be set off clearly, either by indenting the left-hand margin or by using a smaller typeface. Use double quotation marks for direct quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations and for words or phrases used in a special sense.Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing:?running head (shortened title)?article type (if applicable)?title?author(s)?affiliation(s)?full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and e-mail addressAbstractPlease provide a short abstract of 100 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.Key wordsPlease provide 5 to 10 key words or short phrases in alphabetical order.AbbreviationsAbbreviations and their explanations should be collected in a list.Vitae/biographyPlease provide a brief vitae/biography consisting of one paragraph, written in the third person, giving details on present position, education, research interests, and some recent publications if relevant.FiguresAll photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.TablesEach table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.Section headingsFirst-, second-, third- and fourth-order headings should be clearly distinguishable but not numbered.AppendicesSupplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before the Notes and Reference sections.NotesPlease use endnotes rather than footnotes. Notes should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text and listed at the end of the article before the References. A source reference note should be indicated by an asterisk after the title. This note should be placed at the bottom of the first page.Cross-referencingIn the text, a reference identified by means of an author‘s name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s) where appropriate. Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. One corrected proof, together with the original, edited manuscript, should be returned to the Publisher within three days of receipt by mail (airmail overseas).
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.
Page charges and color figures
No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. Color figures are published at the author‘s expense only.
Copyright
Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.
Permissions
It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of figures, tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.

In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice.
