African Journalism Studies ( AJS) aims to contribute to the ongoing extension of the theories, methodologies and empirical data to under-researched areas of knowledge production, through its emphasis on African journalism studies within a broader, comparative perspective of the Global South. AJS strives for theoretical diversity and methodological inclusivity, by developing theoretical approaches and making critical interventions in global scholarly debates. The journal's comparative and interdisciplinary approach is informed by the related fields of cultural and media studies, communication studies, African studies, politics, and sociology.

The field of journalism studies is understood broadly, as including the practices, norms, value systems, frameworks of representation, audiences, platforms, industries, theories and power relations that relate to the production, consumption and study of journalism. A wide definition of journalism is used, which extends beyond news and current affairs to include digital and social media, documentary film and narrative non-fiction.

Manuscripts dealing with the intersections between journalism, politics, culture and society as these pertain to Africa and comparable regions in the Global South are especially invited. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to: the political economy of journalism; global flows and contraflows of journalistic content and capital; journalism and social change; journalism and cultural identity; freedom of the press; journalism ethics; theories of journalism; journalism education and research; changing journalistic practices and norms. The role of journalism in mediating the emerging geopolitical relations between Africa and other regions of the Global South is of particular interest.

All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. All peer review is double-blind and submission is online via

ScholarOne Manuscripts.

African Journalism Studies has emerged as a key intellectual forum for the study of journalism in Africa.  Its theoretical and empirical interventions have not only enriched journalism studies in Africa, but the journal also contributes significantly towards internationalization of this rapidly globalizing field. - Daya Thussu, University of Westminster

For decades, African Journalism Studies has been a source of first rate scholarship regarding journalism and mass communication in Africa. The continued growth and status of the journal are testament to the consistent quality of its editors, editorial board, and peer review process. - Mark Deuze, Indiana University

African Journalism Studies is the premier journalism studies journal in and on Africa. Its authorship has always been global. Debating the entire paradigmatic spectrum, the journal is never shy to publish controversial and challenging articles. - Keyan G. Tomaselli, University of KwaZulu-Natal

The fact that African Journalism Studies has stayed active despite the vicissitudes that have driven many journals out of circulation, is testimony not only of its editorial competence, but also of its ability to publish articles of quality and to attract outstanding scholars. - Francis B. Nyamnjoh, University of Cape Town

Instructions to Authors
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Presentation and submission of articles

African Journalism Studies encourages the critical analysis of journalism in Africa, within its social, cultural and political contexts. The journal welcomes submissions based on empirical work as well as critical essays and position papers. Analytical or argumentative articles will enjoy preference over descriptive overviews or research reports.

Articles
Articles should be between 6 000 and 8 000 words in length. Use  Chicago style. All references, including file properties and running heads identifying the author, should be removed from the manuscript submitted for review. All notes should be kept to a minimum and appear at the end of the article before the list of references. Do not use footnotes. Avoid passive voice.

Abstract
Include a structured abstract of 200 words, covering the main factual points of the article, as well as a statement of the research objective or problem, method, results and conclusions. Do not start with: “In this article...”, but rather provide a statement regarding the article's key points of interest.

Keywords
Supply, in alphabetical order, a list of six to ten keywords for abstracting and indexing services. Note the main title and central concepts in the abstract.

Language
AJS
is published in English (UK). All articles must be professionally edited for grammar and style.

Biographical note
Supply a short biographical note:

Third person

50-80 words

Active voice

Name, (highest qualification if preferred), position, place of employment, short note on research interests, publications, organizations etc.

Mailing address (for print copies)

E-mail address

Website (if applicable)

NB: Article submissions that do not comply with all of the above will not be accepted for editorial consideration and reviewing.

Submission of articles and book reviews
All submissions should be made online at the African Journalism Studies   ScholarOne Manuscripts site  New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Author copies and article access
All authors are entitled to a complimentary print copy of the issue in which their article appears. Please supply a full physical address for all authors. Only where an author's complete address details are provided will a copy be sent. Authors will receive free online access to their articles through the Taylor & Francis website, provided author and co-author email addresses are provided from the outset. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® or alternatively through the Taylor and Francis journals website.
