The American Journal of Health Economics (AJHE) provides a forum for the in-depth analysis of institutional health care systems and individual health behaviors. Read the first issue for free.
The articles appearing in AJHE are authored by scholars from universities, private research organizations, government, and industry. Subjects of interest include competition between private health insurance providers, the impact of the Affordable Care Act, pharmaceutical regulation, medical device supply, the rise of obesity, the influence and growth of aging populations, and much more.
The journal is published by the MIT Press for the American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon). ASHEcon is a professional, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the United States. All ASHEcon members receive the journal as part of membership.

Instructions to Authors
AJHE SUBMISSIONS
Submission to the American Journal of Health Economics proceeds completely online via Editorial Express. You will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of your files. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor’s decision and requests for revision, takes place by e-mail. Full details and author guidelines are available.
AJHE seeks articles related to the economics of health and personal health care services. While the journal's title includes the term "American," which reflects the journal's sponsorship, the journal welcomes papers based on data from other countries—high-, middle-, and low-income countries as well as from the U.S. The scope of this journal includes, but is not limited to, these topics:
- Health and health behaviors
- Demand and utilization of health services
- Markets for private health insurance
- Public financing of health services
- Markets for physicians' services
- Markets for hospital care
- Quality of care and medical malpractice
- Markets for long-term care services and issues of aging more generally
- Markets for pharmaceutical products and medical devices
- Public regulation of health and safety and of personal health care service markets
- Industrial organization of health care markets
- Valuation of health care benefits
- Role of health care in the macroeconomy
The Editors may deem additional topics appropriate. Applications to problems in both developed and less-developed countries are welcomed.
AUTHOR GUIDELINES
Submission to this journal proceeds totally online and you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of your files. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests for revision, takes place by e-mail.
1. Double Blind, Peer Reviewed
The peer review process is double blind. The main upload must be arranged in the following order: blinded title page, abstract, manuscript, references, figures, and tables. Do not include author(s) name(s) in the text or page header. The main file can be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. If your original document is in LaTeX format, please submit it as a supplementary file. A supplementary file should be uploaded that includes a title page with complete author information and any acknowledgments. Details on what the title page should include are specified in item 4.
2. Use of Word Processing Software
It is important that the file be saved in the native format of the word processor used. The main file can be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. If your original document is in LaTeX format, please submit it as a supplementary file. Note that source files of figures, tables, and graphics will be required even though you are also embedding your figures, tables, and graphics in the text. Please upload these files separately in the “supplementary files” section of the upload page. To avoid unnecessary errors you are strongly advised to use the 'spell-check' and 'grammar-check' functions of your word processor.
3. Article Structure
The text should be in single-column format and the entire document, including references, should be double-spaced. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible. Manuscripts will generally be between 5,000 to 14,000 words. Footnotes are allowed, but authors should not use endnotes. Please use the footnote function in your word processor.
3.1 Subdivision
Divide your article into clearly defined sections. Three levels of headings are permitted. Level one should be done in all capitals, using roman numerals and the title, centered flush left. Level two headings should be italicized, flush left, using roman numerals followed by a period and a capitalized letter. Level three headings should be italicized, indented, use an Arabic numeral, include punctuation, and run-in with the first line of the paragraph.

1. Level Three Heading. The first sentence should be a run-in sentence for the paragraph.
4. Essential Title Page Information
4.1. Blinded Title Page
The title page to accompany the blinded manuscript should include the title only with no identifying information.
4.2. Complete Title Page
The complete title page should be uploaded as a separate document and include the following elements.
4.2.1. Title
The title should be concise and informative. Avoid abbreviations where possible.
4.2.2. Author Names and Affiliations.
Where the family name may be ambiguous (e.g., a double name), please indicate this clearly. Present the authors' affiliation addresses (where the actual work was done) below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address. Provide the full address of each affiliation, including the country name and the e-mail address of each author.
4.2.3. Corresponding Author
Clearly indicate the corresponding author. Ensure that phone numbers (with country and area code) are provided in addition to the e-mail address and the complete postal address. Contact details must be kept up to date by the corresponding author.
4.2.4. Present/Permanent Address
If an author has moved since the work described in the article was done, or was visiting at the time, a 'Present address' (or 'Permanent address') may be indicated as a footnote to that author's name. The address at which the author actually did the work must be retained as the main, affiliation address. Superscript Arabic numerals are used for such footnotes.
4.2.5. Role of the Funding Source
You are requested to identify who provided financial support for the research and/or preparation of the article and to briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the manuscript; and in the decision to submit the article for publication. If the funding source(s) had no such involvement then this should be stated.
5. Abstract
The abstract should indicate the study objectives, key hypotheses, main data source(s), key findings, and a brief description of the implications of the findings. The abstract should be concise and factual. Abstracts are limited to 200 words. There is a field on the submission page to enter the abstract.
6. Keywords
Immediately after the abstract, provide a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 keywords, avoiding general and plural terms.
7. Classification codes
Please provide a maximum of 6 standard JEL codes. The available codes may be accessed at JEL: http://www.aeaweb.org/jel/guide/jel.php. These codes should be entered after the keywords on the submission page.
8. Tables & Figures
Tables and figures should be embedded within the manuscript at the end of the document following the references. Tables and figures should be properly labeled and numbered using Arabic numerals and titles. Please make sure that all tables and figures are properly referenced within the text. As described in number 2, please also submit the original file as a supplementary file.
9. Reference Style
The American Journal of Health Economics follows the Chicago Manual of Style. We encourage you to use bibliographic software when preparing your reference list. If you are using such software, please select “Chicago Manual Author-Date” style.
Not all document types are covered in reference list software. Please refer to the Chicago Manual of Style for guidance in these situations.
9.1. Web References
As a minimum, the full URL should be given and the date when the reference was last accessed. Any further information, if known (DOI, author names, dates, reference to a source publication, etc.), should also be given.
10. Conflict of Interest
All authors are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial, personal or other relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work.
11. Submission Declaration and Verification
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis or as an electronic preprint), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder.
12. Submission Checklist
The following list will be useful during the final checking of an article prior to sending it to the journal for review. Please consult this Guide for Authors for further details of any item.

- Phone numbers
All necessary files have been uploaded, and contain:
- Keywords
- JEL codes
- Highlights
- All tables and figures include title, description, footnotes
Further considerations:
- Manuscript has been 'spell-checked' and 'grammar-checked'
- References are in the correct format for this journal
- All references mentioned in the Reference list are cited in the text, and vice versa
- Manuscript is double spaced
