Instructions to Authors
Thank you for choosing to submit your paper to us. These instructions will ensure we have everything required so your paper can move through peer review, production and publication smoothly. Please take the time to read and follow them as closely as possible, as doing so will ensure your paper matches the journal’s requirements. For general guidance on the publication process at Taylor & Francis please visit our Author Services website.
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Instructions for Authors
Aims and Scopes. The Journal of Transportation Safety & Security provides a discussion forum for the exchange of academic ideas, data, and integrated transportation safety solutions developed through engineering research in multimodal transportation safety arenas, which encompass the highway, transit, ridesharing, pedestrian, and bicycle modes, as well as rail, water, and aviation safety issues. The Journal of Transportation Safety & Security’s mission is to disseminate advanced research results and engineering experience to educators, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in order to enhance transportation safety with comprehensive and integrated solutions.
Please note that Journal of Transportation Safety & Security uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to Journal of Transportation Safety & Security you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.
Submission and Preparation. Journal of Transportation Safety & Security receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/UTSS. ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/ . If you have any other requests please contact the journal at lissa@utk.edu.
The submission must be in the form of a single Word file, with the complete document presented in black and white. The Word file should be formatted for 8.5 11 inch size paper. Number all pages consecutively. Papers should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font with standard double spacing in single column and with 1 inch (2.5 cm) margins all round. Authors should limit their papers to no more than 40 pages including all figures, tables, and any other art. The main text should be no more than 6,000 words, and tables and figures should be presented on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Authors whose mother tongue is not English should have their papers copyedited before submission. Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; all authors have approved publication, as well as any responsible authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out. As an author you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table or extract text from any other source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
Sections of the Article: Title page. The title page should include a concise and informative title, the name, affiliation and address of all authors, the e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers (with country and area code) of the corresponding author. Abstract. Provide an abstract of 200words or less. It should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references. Keywords. Provide 4 to 6 keywords that can be used for indexing purposes. Arrangement of the article. Divide the article into clearly defined and numbered sections. Subsections should be numbered 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2), 1.2, etc., and should be used for internal cross-referencing. Any subsection may be given a brief heading. Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter. Acknowledgements. Place any acknowledgements, including grant information, before the reference section.
Measurements. Authors are encouraged to use international measurements (the metric system) throughout the paper and in Tables and Figures.
References. The references should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Cite references in the text by name and year in parentheses, i.e., (Jones 1997), (Richards and Yan 2006), (Reason et al. 2006). Reference list entries should be in APA format and alphabetized. Examples:
Article: Daganzo, C. (1994b). The cell transmission model, part II: Network traffic. Transportation Research Part B, 29B(2), 79–93.
Book: David, W. H., & Lemeshow, S. (1989). Applied logistic regression. New York: John Wiley.
Government Organization: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. (2007). Traffic safety facts 2006. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Conference Proceedings: Hauer, E., & Bamfo, J. (1997). Two tools for finding what function links the dependent variable to explanatory variables. In Proceedings of ICTCT 97: International Cooperation on Theories and Concepts in Traffic Safety (pp. 1–7), Lund, Sweden.
Tables and Figures. All tables and figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals. They should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order. All art should include a heading or caption. Any art used from another source must include a reference at the end of the heading or caption.
Color Reproduction. Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print. Please ensure that color figures and images submitted for online publication can be easily translated into black and white so that the intention of those figures is clear in the print version as well.
Accepted Manuscript Online (AMO). Manuscripts submitted to the Journal are eligible for rapid online posting if a valid copyright form is received and nothing is missing from the paper. The original manuscript will be available on Taylor & Francis Online in a section on the Journal’s page entitled “Forthcoming Articles.” Posted papers will be clearly labeled as the “Accepted, Uncorrected Manuscript” versions and will include DOI numbers so that papers can be cited and referenced. Authors will also receive notification from Taylor & Francis when the manuscript is posted, when the typeset proofs are available, and once again when the final version is posted. Papers in this section will be removed once the edited and final typeset version is posted online.
Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis’ EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Complimentary Policy and Reprints. Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.
Open access. Taylor & Francis Open Select provides authors or their research sponsors and funders with the option of paying a publishing fee and thereby making an article permanently available for free online access – open access – immediately on publication to anyone, anywhere, at any time. This option is made available once an article has been accepted in peer review. Full details of our Open Access program
