Overview

Aims and Scope

Communication, Culture & Critique (CCC) is the International Communication Association’s (ICA) latest publication and the first new journal to emerge from the Association for more than a decade. Subscription to CCC is included with an institutional subscription to Journal of Communication.

CCC provides an international forum for critical, interpretive, and qualitative research examining the role of communication and cultural criticism in today's world. The journal welcomes high quality research and analyses from diverse theoretical and methodological approaches from all fields of communication, media and cultural studies. Media for analysis include all kinds of text- and print-based media, as well as broadcast, still and moving images and electronic modes of communication including the internet and mobile telephony.

Whilst CCC has no interest in perpetuating the unhelpful binary of quantitative/qualitatative in terms of the kinds of submissions it will accept, the journal will specifically encourage scholarship which is critically informed, methodologically imaginative and careful in its exposition and argument. We believe that by providing a new outlet for critical, interpretive and qualitative work, our contributors will push the boundaries of considering the role that communication and culture play in our local and global world.

CCC publishes well-argued, rigorous and thoughtful work which asks more questions than it answers. We aim to provide a lively forum for debate, dialogue and doubt. In the coming years, we will be inviting contributions on topical themes and encouraging interdisciplinary and cross-over work which uses innovative approaches and methods to cast new light on some of the urgent issues facing our planet. Bringing a critical lens to the social, cultural and political dimensions of our media-saturated world is a crucial task in which the academy must engage if we are to be of any real use to the societies in which we work and play. We must recognize the salience of geography on communication flow, the importance of gender on lived experience, the place of poverty in the knowledge society and the historical antecedents of contemporary events, if our work is to have any real meaning for or influence in the lives of real people in the real world.

Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines

Scope of the Journal
Communication, Culture, and Critique (CCC) provides an international forum for critical, interpretive, and qualitative research that examines the role of communication and cultural criticism in today's world. The journal welcomes high-quality research and well-written, lively, and stimulating analyses from diverse theoretical and methodological approaches originating in the fields of communication, media, and cultural studies. Questions and concerns in media and cultural and communication studies (typically involving public communication and media practices) and the literature of these areas have to be central to any article submission to CCC, but the journal is also open to cross-disciplinary submissions that integrate theories and ideas from related disciplines with CCC’s primary areas to pose innovative research questions and offer creative interpretations and implications. Articles that address any one of the three main dimensions of media and communication phenomena, namely, production/regulation and political economy, text and representation, and consumption and audience identity formations, are welcome, but textual critiques must make an effort to integrate sociological and structural and contextual analysis into the deconstruction of cultural texts. Media for analysis include all kinds of text- and print-based media, as well as broadcast, still and moving images as well as electronic modes of communication, including, the Internet and mobile telephony.

To ensure timely publication, we encourage authors to carefully consider whether their manuscripts fit the scope of CCC before they submit. For more information on the scope and expectations of the journal please refer to the editor's inaugural editorial essay: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cccr.12040/abstract.

CCC also periodically publishes commentary essays and book reviews. Please contact the editor or the editorial assistant prior to online submission. Commentary and book review submissions will require approval by the editor before they are considered for evaluation and publication.

Submit Online
Authors must only submit their manuscripts online. Please visit the journal’s submission site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cccr and if you do not already have an account and password, click on “Register Here” in the upper right side of the screen. You will then be guided through the submission process by following step-by-step instructions. Follow the instructions to create an account. Fields marked with “req” are compulsory to complete. Note: the password you select must be at least 8 characters long.

Please do not contact the editor or editorial assistant via e-mail to submit your manuscript. If you choose to submit your manuscript directly to the editorial team, this will delay communication with authors and the next step of assigning papers for peer review.

The submission form online will require authors to supply an abstract.
Authors must ensure that the paper abstract is clear and well-written with no errors and that it summarizes effectively the paper's arguments, organization, and methodology. Ideal reviewers may turn down invitations to evaluate papers because of poorly written abstracts, thus causing delays in the editorial process. The abstract is also the leading part of your paper and gets disseminated widely in library and other databases, so it is in the author's interest to write a strong and polished abstract that will ensure proper attention to your paper.

Manuscript Preparation and Submission
Original Work: Submissions to CCC must not have appeared in any other published form and must not be submitted to any other publication while the manuscript is under review with CCC. All work must be original and studies involving human subjects must have received authorization from the relevant authorities. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that NO versions of the manuscript being submitted are accessible online, namely, posted on personal, university, or, other academic and commercial sites. The International Communication Association’s and the publisher’s policy is that the original submitted work can be archived on any university repository only after acceptance. The editor reserves the right to desk-reject paper submissions to the journal if any versions are found online because previous publication or posting compromises seriously the blind-review process.

All submitted original research manuscripts must be prepared in strict accordance with the 6th edition (2nd printing) of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA: see http://www.apastyle.org/).

Authors should visit the user-friendly site https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ to check for conformity with the 6th edition of APA style for all parts of their manuscript, including, cover page, page numbers, headers, in-text citations, reference list, quotations, and all other relevant formatting and writing aspects.

Authors that are conducting research using new media and digitally retrieved sources should refer to the following APA link to correctly cite material from social media or other online sources: http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2013/10/how-to-cite-social-media-in-apa-style.html

Word Count: Manuscripts should be in the range of 7000 to 8500 words in length (inclusive of references, tables, figures, appendices, and endnotes), with 8500 words observed as the strict maximum. The upper limit of 8500 words will be enforced for revised manuscripts as well, so it is in the author’s best interest to anticipate this word count restriction and plan submissions and revisions accordingly. (Manuscripts less than 6000 words may be sent back for inadequate empirical data, weak presentation of evidence, missing references to key work, and insufficient development of arguments.)

Two electronic documents for submission: Two electronic files only in WORD format (.doc extension) will be needed to complete the submission process. One document is a title page of the manuscript that should provide complete contact information (address, telephone, fax and email) and a brief biographical statement for each author (full name and title, and highest earned academic degree including granting institution). The second and main document (including all tables, figures and appendices) is your original research paper submission. NOTE: We do not accept PDF files.

Other elements to be considered and included in the main manuscript (WORD format) are:

1. Page 1 of main document must include an abstract (maximum of 120 words) and selected keywords (at least five to eight of author’s own keywords).
2. Page 2 starts with title and main text.
3. Use standard type (12-point font, Times New Roman) and 1.0 inch margins throughout.
4. Double-space the entire manuscript, including, abstract, block quotations, and references.
5. Running head should be flush left and all caps, and page numbers should be flush right on each page.
6. References are double-spaced; 2nd and subsequent lines should have hanging indent of 0.5 inch (References should also start on a new page).
7. All tables, figures, appendices and endnotes should be placed after references.
8. Ensure that the identity of the author/authors is concealed in the main manuscript. The manuscript must be completely anonymized with all in-text and reference list citations to the author’s work removed to ensure blind review.
9. Avoid endnotes and if they are absolutely necessary, keep them to a bare minimum. Do not use footnotes.
10. Check for quality of writing. Please proofread paper thoroughly and clean up all grammar, spelling, and typographical errors.

Manuscripts in violation of these guidelines will not be sent out for peer-review. In addition, manuscripts will not be peer-reviewed if, in the opinion of the editor, they do not fit the scope of the journal or have little to no potential for publication. The journal retains the right to make changes in accepted manuscripts that (in the opinion of the editor) do not substantially alter meaning, as well as for grammatical, stylistic, and space considerations.

All articles will be double blind reviewed by at least two reviewers. The advice of a third reviewer will be sought if required, and in this case, there may be a delay in getting reviews completed.

All authors are responsible for securing permission for all images and material used in their manuscripts. Authors should plan to have all permissions by the time of publication so we strongly encourage that all copyrights be secured before the proofs stage.

Copyright Information
It is a condition of publication in CCC that authors assign copyright to the International Communication Association. A completed copyright form must be submitted once your manuscript has been accepted. This form can be downloaded by following the “Instructions & Forms” link from http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cccr.

However, subsequently, all requests for permission to reproduce should be sent to Wiley at the e-mail address jrights@wiley.com. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently, and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible.

Certain funders, including the NIH, members of the Research Councils UK (RCUK) and Wellcome Trust require deposit of the Accepted Version in a repository after an embargo period. Details of funding arrangements are set out at the following website: http://www.wiley.com/go/funderstatement. Please contact the journal production editor if you have additional funding requirements.

Page Proofs and Author Tracking
Wiley Author Services enables authors to track their article – once it has been accepted – through the production process to publication online. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production, and, when published online, access the article for free. Access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via author services only. Authors may also nominate up to 10 specialists to receive free access as well. The corresponding author will receive an e-mail message with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system.

Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
