Instructions to Authors
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND POLICY
The Journal will accept original manuscripts which contain material that has not been reported elsewhere, except in the form of an abstract of not more than 400 words. Prior abstract presentations should be described in a footnote to the title. Submissions should be accompanied by a letter requesting evaluation for publication.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Address manuscripts to: Mark Wiederhold, M.D., Ph.D., FACP., Editor-in-Chief, 6160 Cornerstone Court East, Suite 155, San Diego, CA 92121, Tel: 858-642-0267. E-mail: cyberpsych@vrphobia.com
Manuscripts should be submitted by sending one original plus three copies and three sets of the original figures.
Manuscript Submission and Copyright Agreement Form
The Copyright Agreement form (available from web site at http://www.liebertpub.com/media/content/transfer_of_copyright.pdf.) should be submitted once your paper has been accepted for publication. Manuscripts cannot be published without this form. The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining signatures of coauthors. Authors not permitted to release copyright must still return the form signed under the statement of the reason for not releasing the copyright. Upon acceptance of your paper, please fax the Copyright Agreement form to 914-740-2108.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT
Type manuscripts double spaced on regular 8 ?x 11 typewriter paper (not erasable bond). Leave ample margins on both sides, top and bottom. Submit the original and three copies, including illustrations and tables. You must also submit the manuscript on disk, in addition to a hard copy, in a Windows 95 compatible format (WordPerfect for Windows version 5.0-6.1 or Microsoft Word). Macintosh submissions cannot be accepted. Disk must match hard copy exactly.
The title page should include the author's names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of about 45 characters. Please indicate the name, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed. The second page should consist of an abstract of not more than 250 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. One possible format could be: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, and references. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed. Consult an issue of the Journal for the exact format.
TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
Type each table along with its title on a separate sheet of paper. Use arabic numerals to number tables. Remember each table must stand alone-i.e., contain all necessary information in the caption, and the table itself must be understood independently of the text. Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. Information that appears in the text should not be repeated in tables, and tables should not contain data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.
Original pen drawings and charts (drawn and lettered in India ink), glossy photostats of drawings or graphs, and original glossy photographs for all halftone illustrations should be supplied with the original manuscript. (Photocopies cannot be used for reproduction.) All illustrations should be identified on the back and bear the author's name. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A list of figure legends should be supplied at the end of the manuscript, double spaced. Magnifications should be included where appropriate. Illustrations will not be returned unless requested. ZIP disks containing figures may be accepted only if it is Photoshop or Illustrator TIF or EPS format. All other disks will be rejected.
A complete, separately collated set must be submitted with each copy of the manuscript. Illustrations can be printed in color with a subsidy from the author and are encouraged. Contact the publisher for details.
REFERENCES
References MUST be presented in the following style:
Journal papers: Murray BE, Singh KV, Markowitz SM. Evidence for clonal spread of a single strain of Enterococcus. Journal of Infectious Diseases 1991; 163:780-5.
Books: Lezak, M.D. (1995). Neuropsychological assessment. New York: Oxford University Press.
Book Chapters: Ruoff KL.(1995) Streptococcus. In: Murray PR, Baron EJ, eds. Manual of clinical microbiology. Washington, D.C.: ASM Press, pp. 299-307.
References in text must be cited in numerical order using superscript numbers. Do not use author/date format. If it is necessary to cite an abstract, this should be designated. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references, and are reminded that inaccurate references are highly frustrating to the reader, the cited author, and indexing services.
PERMISSIONS
The author must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables and text from previously published material. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher, not the author or editor) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information should be included in the reference list. Adaptions of figures or tables must carry a citation in the figure legend or table footnote and there must be a full reference given in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other laboratories, and should accompany the manuscript.
REPRINTS
Reprints may be ordered by using the special reprint order form that will accompany page proofs. Reprints ordered after the issue is printed will be charged at a substantially higher rate.
