Now in its 30th year, The International Journal of the History of Sport ( IJHS )   is the world’s leading sport history academic periodical with its fully-refereed global coverage of the subject. As well as regular issues, the IJHS also offers regionally-focused issues on the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific, Europe, and from 2012 the Middle East. Additionally there are special issues each year on topics and themes of international significance. A reviews section ensures that readers are kept up to date with publications in the field. Instructions to Authors
Manuscript preparation

Contributors should be aware that they will be expected to assign full copyright in the article to the publisher prior to publication. Please check the further information on this in the section below entitled 'Copyright and authors' rights '.

1. General guidelines

- Papers are accepted only in English. British English spelling and punctuation is preferred. Please use single quotation marks, except where ‘a quotation is “within” a quotation’. 'ise' endings are to be used.
- A typical article will not exceed 10,000 words inclusive of notes.
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; notes on contributor(s); appendixes (as appropriate); endnotes; references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
Abstracts of 200 words are required for all papers submitted.
- Each paper should have 5 to 6 keywords .
- A short biographical paragraph outlining the career background of each author also needs to be supplied.
- Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here .
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, institutional affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the corresponding author. The affiliations of all named co-authors should be the affiliation where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after the article is accepted. Please note that the email address of the corresponding author will normally be displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal style) and the online article.
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
- Authors must adhere to SI units . Units are not italicised.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

2. Special issue guidelines

All special issues of IJHS will have one of the Academic Editors appointed as a Reporting Editor to assist the appointed Guest Editor(s) and to ensure the quality of the issue and that all the relevant deadlines are met.

The Guest Editor(s) should formally acknowledge that they will adhere to the IJHS regulations regarding special issues of the journal, as outlined below:

1. A title, a table of contents, and a list of all Guest Editors (GE) for the special issue should be submitted to the Reporting Editor (RE) as soon as practicable, and certainly before manuscripts are submitted and peer-reviewed. Guest Editors are normally restricted to no more than three in number, unless approval has been obtained from Wray Vamplew, Managing Editor (ME) of IJHS . There must be one nominated GE, to whom the RE will direct all correspondence. To avoid misunderstandings no other GE will be dealt with except in an emergency.

2. All relevant deadlines must be adhered to. If a special issue is not completed by its due date it will be withdrawn from the IJHS schedule by Wray Vamplew, ME of IJHS , until further notice.

3. The overall word length of a special issue must not exceed 80,000 words inclusive of notes (and preferably be less than 75,000) unless prior permission to exceed the limit has been obtained from Wray Vamplew, ME of IJHS

4. Please note that for consistency ‘Prologues’ and/or ‘Epilogues’ should not be used in special issues. Instead, if necessary, a ‘Guest Editorial’ or ‘Introduction’ may be included.

5. For the purposes of ScholarOne the corresponding GE will be labelled as a temporary Academic Editor. All manuscripts that come into ScholarOne will be directed to the relevant named corresponding GE who then arranges the referees and who ultimately takes responsibility for the special issue.

6. All manuscripts should be submitted by contributing authors in the approved journal style via ScholarOne. Comprehensive information regarding the IJHS ‘style’ is available in section 4. 'Journal style guidelines' below.

7. Ideally authors should generally submit their own manuscripts via the ScholarOne site. In section one of the Author Centre they can indicate that it is for a special issue and in section 5 there will be a pulldown menu of special issue titles so they can say which issue they are submitting to. Section 4 allows them to notify the GE of any referees they would not like their paper sent to.

8. Should authors send their articles directly to the GE via email, it is possible for the GE to upload them on the author’s behalf. This will require the GE to ‘proxy’ as the author, so first they need an account creating. Once created, the GE will be able to proxy as this author to submit through their own author centre. Information on how to proxy authors will be made available to the GE by Wray Vamplew, ME of IJHS .

9. Normally at least two ‘blind’ referee reports will be required for all manuscripts. The nominated GE will be given access and instructions related to the use of ScholarOne via Wray Vamplew, the ME of IJHS , so that the peer-review process is transparent to the RE and the ME, both of whom reserve the right to request additional refereeing. This transparency is essential to ensure that we continue to feature in the various citation indices. Any problems with the use of ScholarOne should be directed to  Rebecca Gelson .

10. The ‘final’ peer-reviewed and revised version of manuscripts should be made available to the RE via ScholarOne for comment and approval at least one month before the due submission date. This can be done when the revised article is resubmitted through ScholarOne. The GE should nominate the RE as a referee. The RE then reads and approves it or, if there are any problems, sends a 'referees' report to the GE via ScholarOne. Meanwhile the GE has also had the revised submission to look at and approve. Once approved by the RE, the manuscripts can be released to the IJHS Pre-Production Centre for copy-editing.

11. Please ensure that these instructions are followed for all special issue articles when the final accepted manuscript is released to the IJHS Pre-Production Centre.

12. The nominated GE must be available to assist in the final proofing, along with the individual authors, the RE, and the ME, when required.

Please note that the role of the Reporting Editor, who will be appointed by the Managing Editor following negotiations and discussion with the Editorial College, is as follows:

- To make early and continuing contact with the relevant nominated GE, ensuring that all relevant deadlines are met.
- To act as advisor to the nominated GE when requested but also to make suggestions where appropriate.
- To ensure that all contributions, especially conference papers, are refereed (and preferably not just by the GE(s).
- To keep the overall length below 80,000 words, unless prior agreement has been made with the ME.
- To approve the final version to be submitted to the publishers via ScholarOne. If there is any dispute the ME will act as arbitrator.
- To assist in the final proofing along with the individual authors, the GE, and the ME, when required.

5. Figures

- It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
- Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
- Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)).
- Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
- The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

7. Reproduction of copyright material

As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplemental material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given.

8. Supplemental online material

Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Manuscript submission

All submissions should be made online at the  IJHS ScholarOne Manuscripts site . New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Manuscripts may be submitted in any standard format, including Word, Endnote and PDF. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. LaTeX files should be converted to PDF prior to submission because ScholarOne Manuscripts is not able to convert LaTeX files into PDFs directly.

Copyright and authors rights

It is a condition of publication that all contributing authors grant to Taylor & Francis the necessary rights to the copyright in all articles submitted to the Journal. Authors are required to sign an Article Publishing Agreement to facilitate this. This will ensure the widest dissemination and protection against copyright infringement of articles. The “article” is defined as comprising the final, definitive, and citable Version of Scholarly Record, and includes: (a) the accepted manuscript in its final and revised form, including the text, abstract, and all accompanying tables, illustrations, data; and (b) any supplemental material. Copyright policy is explained in detail at

You can easily view, read, and download your published articles from there. In addition, if someone has cited your article, you will be able to see this information.
