About the journal

International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education

The issue of sustainability in a higher education context is, to some extent, a rather recent theme. Current journals are either focusing on sustainable development per se, or on general higher education. There are no specific fully-refereed outlets to date, to disseminate the broad body of work and knowledge currently available on sustainability in a higher education context. International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (IJSHE) is therefore the first scholarly publication to specifically address the need for the dissemination of information on sustainability matters at higher education institutions. IJSHE will cater for:

  • Papers: scientific descriptions of projects, experiments or pilot projects dealing with sustainability-related issues, management, curriculum greening, etc.
  • Articles: short texts outlining approaches, methods or case studies in which institutional approaches to sustainability are described
  • Book reviews: describing recent publication on the topic and on related matters
  • News: items of general interest and matters of relevance to all readers
  • Features: broader descriptions of facts, trends, phenomena or developments in the field. Features are prepared by leading specialists commissioned for each issue
  • A balanced provision of information on matters of regional and international relevance will be provided

Key benefits

The journal will be the first one to specifically focus on the subject of sustainability and sustainable development at universities. Since over 600 universities worldwide have committed themselves towards sustainability by signing international agreements and convention such as the Bologna Charter, The Halifax Declaration, the Talloires Declaration and the Copernicus Charter for Sustainable Development (signed to date by over 240 European universities), this journal shall be of special interest to them. It shall be helpful to subscribers in that sense that:

  • It provides up-to-date information on new developments and trends
  • It reports on international experiences, especially from Europe and North America, but also from other parts of the world (e.g. Africa, Latin America, Asia, Oceania)
  • It is a tool for the dissemination of reliable information
  • It enables networking and information exchange on a global basis

Last but not least, the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education represents a step forward in the provision of a peer-reviewed journal, which may promote the work of the people working in the field, disseminating their work and their own institutions, on an international basis.

Key journal audience

The journal will be of special interest to higher education institutions and to those working on them. Target groups of the journal are:

  • University administrators (e.g. Rectors, Vice-Chancellors, Presidents and Principals)
  • Professors/Assistant Professors, Lecturers/Senior Lecturers and other members of staff (e.g. research fellows, research associates, adjuncts) working with environmental matters
  • Staff working at estate departments and other members of staff (at universities and colleges) in charge of health and safety, water and electricity consumption and transport policies among others, will find the journal of interest
  • Students are also among the groups the journal intends to reach

Coverage

Materials particularly suitable for the journal will deal with one or more of the following contents:

  • Environmental management systems
  • Sustainable development
  • Curriculum greening
  • Agenda 21
  • Operational aspects of universities
  • Energy, water, recycling, waste management
  • Planning and design of campuses
  • Environmental reports
  • Environmental policies and action plans
  • Staff and student initiatives

Other themes associated to the above or emerging ones will also be considered. It is envisaged that, thanks to its scope and contents, the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education will be not only interesting to people working in the academic sector, but also to practitioners, consultants and professional writers.

Review process

Each paper is reviewed by the editor and, if it is judged suitable for this publication, it is then sent to at least two independent referees for double blind peer review. Based on their recommendation, as well as consultation between relevant Editorial Board members the editor then decides whether the paper should be accepted as is, revised or rejected.

Copyright

Articles submitted to the journal should not have been published before in their current or substantially similar form, or be under consideration for publication with another journal. Please see Emerald's originality guidelines for details. Use this in conjunction with the points below about references, before submission i.e. always attribute clearly using either indented text or quote marks as well as making use of the preferred Harvard style of formatting. Authors submitting articles for publication warrant that the work is not an infringement of any existing copyright and will indemnify the publisher against any breach of such warranty. For ease of dissemination and to ensure proper policing of use, papers and contributions become the legal copyright of the publisher unless otherwise agreed.

The editor may make use of iThenticate software for checking the originality of submissions received. Please see our press release for further details.

Permissions

Prior to article submission, authors should clear permission to use any content that has not been created by them.  Failure to do so may lead to lengthy delays in publication.  Emerald is unable to publish any article which has permissions pending.  The rights Emerald require are:

  1. Non-exclusive rights to reproduce the material in the article or book chapter.
  2. Print and electronic rights.
  3. Worldwide English language rights.
  4. To use the material for the life of the work (i.e. there should be no time restrictions on the re-use of material e.g. a one-year licence).

When reproducing tables, figures or excerpts (of more than 400 words) from another source, it is expected that:

  1. Authors obtain the necessary written permission in advance from any third party owners of copyright for the use in print and electronic formats of any of their text, illustrations, graphics, or other material, in their manuscript.  Permission must also be cleared for any minor adaptations of any work not created by them.
  2. If an author adapts significantly any material, the author must inform the copyright holder of the original work.
  3. Authors obtain any proof of consent statements
  4. Authors must always acknowledge the source in figure captions and refer to the source in the reference list.
  5. Authors should not assume that any content which is freely available on the web is free to use.  Authors should check the website for details of the copyright holder to seek permission for re-use.

Emerald is a member of the STM Association and participates in the reciprocal free exchange of material with other STM members.  This may mean that in some cases, authors do not need to clear permission for re-use of content. If so, please highlight this upon submission. For more information and additional help, please follow the Permissions for your Manuscript guide.

COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics)

All of Emerald’s journals benefit from COPE membership (see: http://www.publicationethics.org/). COPE provides advice to editors and publishers on all aspects of publication ethics and, in particular, how to handle cases of research and publication misconduct. This means that Emerald adheres to high ethical standards in publishing.

Emerald Literati Network Editing Service

The Emerald Literati Network can recommend, via our Editing Service, a number of freelance copy editors, all themselves experienced authors, to contributors who wish to improve the standard of English in their paper before submission. This is particularly useful for those whose first language is not English.

Final submission

Authors should note that proofs are not supplied prior to publication. The manuscript will be considered to be the definitive version of the article. The author must ensure that it is complete, grammatically correct and without spelling or typographical errors. Before submitting, authors should check their submission completeness using the available Article Submission Checklist.
