About the journal

The European Journal of Development Research is a multi-disciplinary journal that seeks to broaden our understanding of the processes that advance or impede human development, whether from a political, economic, sociological or anthropological perspective.

As a peer-reviewed academic journal, we particularly welcome submissions that improve our conceptual understanding of these processes, or propose policy and developmental tools by analysing empirical evidence, whether qualitative, quantitative or anecdotal.

We understand development to be an ongoing process that affects all communities, societies, states and regions: We therefore do not have a geographical bias, but wherever possible prospective authors should seek to highlight how their study has relevance to researchers and practitioners studying development in different environments. Although a majority of the papers we publish examine the challenges for developing countries, we recognize that there are important lessons to be derived from the experiences of regions in the developed world.

Submissions must be well-grounded in theory, and must also indicate how their findings are relevant to development practitioners in the field and/or policy makers.

The EJDR is published 5 times a year, in a mix of regular and special theme issues. We accept submissions in English, French and Spanish.

Submission should be made on-line at : mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fedr

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submissions

The European Journal of Development Research is a refereed journal. Articles submitted to the EJDR should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication elsewhere at the same time. If a different version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.

Open Access & Self Archiving

Authors of accepted papers can opt to pay an Article Processing Charge of £1600 / $2600 (+VAT where applicable) for their articles to be made Open Access online immediately upon publication. By paying this charge authors are also permitted to post the final, published PDF of their article on a website, institutional repository or other free public server, immediately on publication.

Please see our FAQs for further details or download our license to publish form.

Palgrave Macmillan's publishing policies ensure that authors can fully comply with the public access requirements of many major funding bodies worldwide - please visit www.sherpa.ac.uk for more information. However, it is the author's responsibility to take the necessary actions to achieve compliance. These may include self archiving, opting into Palgrave Macmillan's manuscript deposition service and/or choosing Open Access publication.

Authors of accepted articles are encouraged to submit the author's version of the accepted paper (the unedited manuscript) to their funding body's archive, for public release 18 months after publication of the final article in a full paginated journal issue. In addition, authors are encouraged to archive this version of the manuscript in their institution's repositories and on their personal websites, also 18 months after the original publication. This is in line with Palgrave Macmillan's self-archiving policy.

Ethics Policy

This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics. We expect all prospective authors to read and understand our Ethics Policy before submitting any manuscript to this journal. This policy details the responsibilities of all authors, editors and reviewers working with and for Palgrave Macmillan Journals as well as our own ethical responsibilities. This includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism, falsification of data, misuse of third party material, fabrication of results and fraudulent authorship. Please note that submitted manuscripts may be subject to checks using the iThenticate service, in conjunction with CrossCheck, in order to detect instances of overlapping and similar text. The iThenticate software checks submissions against millions of published research papers, documents on the web, and other relevant sources. If plagiarism or misconduct is found, consequences are detailed in the policy.

The following guidelines need to be taken into account:

All submissions should conform to our style guidelines and be submitted online at The European Journal of Development Research’s Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fedr.

New users should first create an account. If you have already submitted or reviewed for the Journal it is likely that you already have an account. Please check before trying to create a new one. Once you have logged onto the site, submissions should be made via your Author Centre. On-line assistance is provided via the “Get Help Now” button at the top right corner of every screen in the author centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two documents. The first should be a coversheet containing author names, affiliations and contact details. The second should contain the abstract and full article text; all information identifying the author(s) should be removed from this file to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the coversheet as “File not for review”, and the anonymous article file as “Main Document”. All graphics (tables, figures and all other illustrations) should be included at the end of the manuscript file after the notes.

  1. Articles should be formatted as A4 documents, double-spaced and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively.
  2. Articles may be submitted and subsequently published in English, French or Spanish. The EJDR does not provide copy editing facilities, and authors are responsible for making sure their articles meet an acceptable standard. If authors are not certain whether or not their text corresponds linguistically to international standards, they should present texts that have been language-edited by a native speaker of either French, Spanish or English. A spelling check and grammar check should be performed before sending manuscripts to the editors.
  3. Articles should be no longer than 9000 words all inclusive in their final version (including title, abstract, acknowledgement, notes, references and any appendices including tables and figures). Authors should bear in mind that this limit also applies to papers accepted for publication. We thus highly recommend that some scope is left for possible revision following the refereeing process. Submissions over this limit will be sent back to authors for shortening.
  4. The article should begin with an indented and italicised abstract of maximum 150 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article.
  5. In addition to the abstract, authors are asked to give between five and eight keywords.
  6. Details of all authors’ institutional affiliations, their full addresses and other contact information (including email, fax, and telephone number) should be included on a separate coversheet. The corresponding author should be indicated. Any acknowledgements should be included on the coversheet, as should a note of the exact length of the article (including notes, references and biographical data)
  7. All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text. Please do not indicate where in the text they should be placed. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from copyright holders for reproducing any material previously published elsewhere (including illustrations, tables, figures or lengthy quotations). Sources should be credited in the accompanying captions.
  8. Notes should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the paper, before the reference section. Do not use footnotes, and do not use the foot/endnote macro in MS Word as this data is lost in the production process. Author acknowledgements should be provided separately on the cover page.
  9. All references cited in the paper should be listed in the reference section. Bibliographical references should be checked for accuracy.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their articles conform to the EJDR’s style guidelines. Manuscripts which do not observe the Journal’s presentational requirements will be returned.

Nomination of Referees

The refereeing procedures for The European Journal of Development Research require authors to nominate two reviewers whom they regard as authorities competent to evaluate their work; as a means to ensuring fairness papers will be evaluated in a double blind process by two reviewers.

The reviewer nominations serve as a reference for the Editors. The reviewers chosen should be experts who have no relationship with the authors. If the authors decide to nominate reviewers with a past or present relationship, a declaration on the association must be made. The editors reserve the right to use neither, some or all of the nominations.

Style guidelines

Figures and Tables

The journal is printed in black-and-white. Therefore, we prefer that you supply your figures in greyscale. Figures supplied in colour will be converted to greyscale for print unless the author confirms they will cover the cost of printing in colour (costs available from the production/editorial office). You may however request for any/all figures to be shown in colour in the HTML (web) version of your article, but bear in mind that the PDF/print version will still be black-and-white, so please make sure that colour is not critical to understanding any figures; and do not describe elements of the figure in terms of their colours. For example line graphs with several data series can usually be represented adequately in black-and-white by using different line styles and/or different shaped nodes.

References in the text

In the text, refer to the author(s) names(s) (without initials, unless there are two authors with the same name) and year of publication. Et al should be used when citing works by more than two authors. Details of personal communications are included with the citation in the text, and not added to the reference list. Publications which have not yet appeared are given a probable year of publication and should be checked at proof stage on author query sheet.

Example:

Since Paterson (1983) has shown that… This is in results attained later (Kramer et al., 1984:16). Results have been reported (Robinson, 1989, personal communication) which suggest…

Publications by the same author(s) in the same year should be identified with a, b, c (e.g. 1974a, 1990b) closed up to the year. If there are two authors for a publication, put both names separated by ‘and’ (not &). If there are more than two authors, put the name of the first author with et al to follow. References to material only on the internet must be given in brackets in the text, not in the reference list. The full URL must be given.

  • Example: www.nature.com/onc/v18/n1/1234567.html

List of References

References are placed in alphabetical order of authors. Et al should not be used in the reference list: give names of all the authors. Examples of correct forms of references for alphabetical style:

Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.

PDF

Corresponding authors will receive a copy of the journal and a PDF of their article. This PDF offprint is provided for personal use. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to pass the PDF offprint onto co-authors (if relevant) and ensure that they are aware of the conditions pertaining to its use.

The PDF must not be placed on a publicly-available website for general viewing, or otherwise distributed without seeking our permission, as this would contravene our copyright policy and potentially damage the journal’s circulation. Please visit http://www.palgrave-journals.com/pal/authors/rights_and_permissions.html to see our latest copyright policy.

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts to EADI.
